The National Solidarity Party (NSP) has called for a Freedom of Information Act “to achieve the level of scrutiny and debate desired by Singaporeans”.
In a statement released Friday, the NSP's secretary-general Hazel Poa said that opposition parties should have equal access to all information pertinent to the formulation of public policies and laws.
That is “unless there are overriding reasons for withholding information, for example where national security may be threatened”.
This will then allow different political parties to better “scrutinise each other and hold each other to higher standards… (which) will ultimately benefit Singaporeans,” added Poa.
Referring to the recent parliamentary debate where the PAP had chided the Workers’ Party (WP) for failing to submit their proposal to the ministerial salary review committee, the NSP also said in its statement that if “there is no obligation on the part of the Government to provide WP with relevant information they require, no robust debate will ever be possible in Parliament.”
Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean had said he was “a bit perturbed” that WP Non-Constituency MP Gerald Giam's had based his proposition on the MX9 grade when he was uncertain of the full details.
Giam had earlier explained that the MX9 grade “was not something that we are privy to”, although he understood that it corresponds more to general wage levels than to the income of the top 1,000 Singaporean earners.
