We need equal access to information: NSP

The National Solidarity Party (NSP) has called for a Freedom of Information Act “to achieve the level of scrutiny and debate desired by Singaporeans”.

In a statement released Friday, the NSP's secretary-general Hazel Poa said that opposition parties should have equal access to all information pertinent to the formulation of public policies and laws.

That is “unless there are overriding reasons for withholding information, for example where national security may be threatened”.

This will then allow different political parties to better “scrutinise each other and hold each other to higher standards… (which) will ultimately benefit Singaporeans,” added Poa.

Referring to the recent parliamentary debate where the PAP had chided the Workers’ Party (WP) for failing to submit their proposal to the ministerial salary review committee, the NSP also said in its statement that if “there is no obligation on the part of the Government to provide WP with relevant information they require, no robust debate will ever be possible in Parliament.”

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean had said he was “a bit perturbed” that WP Non-Constituency MP Gerald Giam's had based his proposition on the MX9 grade when he was uncertain of the full details.

Giam had earlier explained that the MX9 grade “was not something that we are privy to”, although he understood that it corresponds more to general wage levels than to the income of the top 1,000 Singaporean earners.

Freedom of Information Act is important. Why? Because with data, we will know whether we are raiding the reserve as per what Mah Bow Tan said or our hard-earned CPF money is being raided by HDB and GIC.

Singapore has been governed by one single party for the last 50 years. It is a long time indeed which equates to half a century. So if certain things are kept under wraps for this whole period of time, just imagine how much information were not made known or public. This naturally retards the ability of the Opposition to speak out against certain policies where the details are not made publicly known, Take a good example of the recent Presidential elections where even the some of the four talented Tans who took part were initially uncertain of what exactly are the powers of the elected President. After their speaking out, more details emerged on what it actually is. Just imagine such important matters were little known about by the public. This is partially because much laws were passed through Parliament hastily with little being made clearly understood to the general public.

This govt will never ever open up the information the ppl ask for cos there are so many disturbing things there. Remember ong teng cheong, devan nair,JB Jayaretam, tang liang hong, francis seow.... pls learn to trust these guys. the media can easily write a lot of crap stories abt them, but dont trust the the media here.
the only way is to kick PAP out and then you can truly see the effects in the files and I am sure you all will be very very shock....shock....shock....and then we will realise that it's too late because we have given PAP the power for a very very long time and nothing and no amount of money that we have can rectify these matters.
Let's ask ourselves, why america has a max of two terms for their president????

Singapore, the world's second most densely populated country after Monaco, covers 715 square km (276 sq miles).

      We are overcrowded

The Government's FT policy has caused Singaporeans to have difficulty to find jobs. Not only that, if they could find jobs, their salaries are damned low. 15 years ago, an inexperienced degree holder could earn $3,000 p.m. and experienced degree could earn at above $6k. This has been a history now since degree holders are hard to find jobs.

We need to know how much bonus and salary Temasek and GIC are paying themselves and how do we pay for losses that GIC and Temasek makes , who pays for the million dollar looses and how ?

Yes. . . indeed their own National (Face) will be threatened. With full access to info, Opposition can debate better in Parliament (Home Security), react faster to discriminatory practices and would spur additional courage to muster more Face-Off.

I was also not a bit but very perturbed that TCH had act very blur about his 2 scholars directors being arrested by CPIB. Mind you, if you are suspected, CPIB will ask you to go there, but when you are arrested, they had already concrete evidence to nail you. Can TCH say that he is uncertain over the arrest based on based on what proposition. Enough of your rubbish, don't act as if you are the last to know about it in Singapore.

Don't understand Why DPM TEO keep asking MX9. As long as workers party finds that MX9 salary range is closer to what they think was acceptable management's pay in most private sector, they can bench mark it. Our DPM TEO needs to be more gracious and not keep asking the same non important question over & over again.

Transparency? Over their PAPie..s last breath, they will never in a zillion years do that, they have so many things that cannot see the light of the day, lets face it, who do not know that?!

They say that knowledge is power and I am sure the PAP is fully aware of this. That is the reason why information is not always available to the general public when it should. Not because of national security. That is just some lame excuse. As an example, immigration and crime statistics should be made fully available to the general public. And when the government does reveal some information, it is often not complete. But I guess we all know why the government will never want to fully reveal these information.

Information is what current govt will not give to the general public, ppl have been asking for decade the cost to built a HDB flat.
