'SMRT clueless in this new media age'

    SMRT's official Twitter account description.

    COMMENT

    It really beggars belief.

If the photo above is any indication, it’s no wonder SMRT is so totally clueless about communications in this new media age.

How can its recently launched Twitter channel describe itself as operating only during office working hours, “9am to 6pm, Mon – Fri (except public holidays)”?

Dear me. Weekend, then how? Public holiday – even worse.

Template or otherwise, it's not the first time this week the good people at SMRT have shown how woefully unprepared they are to face a new generation of commuters who demand and deserve better, and rightly so. (This is Singapore after all, isn’t it?)

Earlier this week, radio deejay Hossan Leong was "censured" for reading out a supposedly unverified tweet on air that said the Circle Line was down. Why? For apparently not waiting for an official statement from the transport operator.

Two days later, SMRT sent out the by now infamous “income opportunity” alert to their affiliated taxi company, telling its “partners” to take advantage of the commuter chaos caused by Thursday’s massive breakdown.

Blogger mrbrown even wrote on his blog that on one of the affected trains, an actual announcement on the public address said, "Due to a slight delay, there will be a delay."

One of the major fails during what has surely been the worst week of the transport operator’s history has been how slow they have been to communicate any major disruptions. The people are not asking for the cause because that understandably takes time.

People just want to find out if they can get to where they need to go in time. No ifs or buts or face-saving PR tactics -- just inform people what they need to know, preferably real-time. After all, there's no point hiding now because there is no place to hide.

Hopefully this lesson hasn't been lost on other government agencies out there that have often been criticised for “not getting it”.

(Updated) A full public inquiry has now been convened, says PM Lee, to determine the root cause of the breakdowns. A separate panel of experts will also do a "thorough check" on the healthiness of the rail network.

Hopefully, maybe either one of the two will be able to tell the people what SMRT so far hasn't been able to -- just what the hell has been going on.

(Updated Sunday 728pm) SMRT have updated their Twitter channel. Its profile description now simply says "The official Twitter channel of SMRT".

How do you feel about this article?

SMRT SHOULD BE RUN BY A CEO WITH MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DEGREES, JUST LIKE SIA BEING SO WELL MANAGED FIRST BY MR PILLAY, AN ENGINEER WITH ECONOMICS BACKGROUND. THESE QUALIFICATIONS ARE NECESSARY TO ENSURE FUTURE ENGINEERING AND OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS BEING ANTICIPATED AND PREVENTED.

Just in case, some of you have no idea how Ms. Saw got this job...

I understand and read clearly that day when she was appointed to the post of CEO SMRT. She said in an interview that ...... Back then, she had already left DFS without a job (I think was retrench or what) and she said she was traveling in Europe, when she came upon a SMRT Job Advertisement for the top post of SMRT in Europe local paper . And it was there in the foreign land that she wrote in to apply for the post.... When she was back in Singapore, she said she was surprised that she got the Job Offer.

the ceo has to resign. no if or buts or maybes. the ceo alone is responsible for all decisions and results. no blame game here. dun blame the technicians or engineers, or the unprepared SMRT staff. if u r taking back million dollar salary and bonus and driving a spanking ferrari, u better know what u r doing. not just apologizing again and again.

ceo Saw said that quote "No good leader will leave the field when the battle is on. I am staying put now todo my work, and put everything right." She is a Sales person, not a COMPETENT(EFFECTIVE & EFFICIENT) leader-NO USE being a good leader. If she is that COMPETENT, then she will not ignore the importance of running and maintainingSMRT's trains and rail tracks to keep them in good working conditions despite the fact that she is a NON-TECHNICAL PERSON. THIS IMPORTANT PORTFOLIO is ignored as she concentrated on increasing SMRT profits that grew from $56.8 million to $161,1 million by increasing the rental spaces of shops and alleys of each station which accounts for 45% of the total profits now, ie $72.495 million from rental income. That why her SALARY is over $1 million every year. Why should the bosses care as she is getting in incremental profits for the company every year.

From this point, let drop to the BASIC ie She is A VERY GOOD SALES PERSON, BUT NOT A COMPETENT(EFFECTIVE & EFFICIENT) LEADER TO LEAD SMRT IN SUCH A MASSIVE SCALE OPERATION. High time she come to her sense, we need no Dowager in Singapore.

If I remember correctly, one of the top guys managing the HK MRT is a Singaporean and was previously from our LTA. May be Minister Liu can ask him for help.

Can someone please help to answer the reason why we're paying for a transport fare hike in the time of slow economic growth and maybe a financial crisis later???

"They" claim Singapore is a First World Country, just to justify their high salary and bonus. But what's the point of being a "first world country" when their competency is still "Third world country" standard?? "They" want to a full public enquiry about the breakdown, what about a public enquiry on how Ms Saw got her current appointment?

Singapore indeed is runby a 'world-class' government.

      World-class (idiotic) government.

CEO of SMRT, please listen. You say a good leader will not walk away from a war. Excuse me, you still have the cheek to call yourself a good leader. No shame.

People will not expect things not to happen. But people will see how the reponsible person handle the situation, has the answer for the public and the timeline. This detemines how capable the responsible person is. Think our country is still not open enough to accept criticism, not transparent enough to the public, not having a good enough service standard. One hand use the COE reason to profiting, and the other hand raise the public transport fare. What kind of bull shit reason is this, raise the fare first in order to have a better service ? It should be the other way round. Public transportation should be in the benefits of the public and making profit should be secondary. We call our country a developed country.

In the 1st place.... why they get a lady who know nuts about trains to run SMRT?... If we can get a honest answer ... a lot of problems concerning SMRT will be solved.

Most of us holds a mobile phone, why cant SMRT coordinate with with Starhub, Singtel, M1 to send out SMS to subscribers to inform them of such break down?

If subscribers received such information earlier they could find alternative route to work instead they sent out msg to their chabby drivers about "Income Opportunity" ??

I guess tapping on various service providers to send SMS to subscribers means given them more opportunities for another fare increase to hike up their bonuses and salaries, not???

Dont be surrpised they will factor all these in their reports for their next fare increase as well to make us poorer but not their company profit margain!

It Is indeed one of the worst public transport outcried i can remember. We will definetly see more chaos like this in the come weeks if not months. The network is fully pushed to its limit and the maintenance team have little time to check on even recitfy any fault. The train is now operating 2 minutes interval during the peak hours and the train is always packed to its maximum capacity so the wear and tear is inevitable. The CEO and her team are at a lost now and our transport minister will have sleepless night for now.We really need experts from oversea to get this done just like the Chao chu kang LRT network which is running smoothly now.For now, eveytime I step into the train, I am all prepare for the next distruption if lucky .

PM should also convene an inquiry to get rid of all the poisonous mushrooms that have grown strong & fat. A clear message must be sent across to other state owned service providers/government agencies that there is sbsolutely NO ROOM FOR IMCOMPETENCE DUE TO COMPLACENCY.
