10 most-popular New Year's Eve destinations for Indonesian travelers

Travel website TripAdvisor recently revealed a list of the 10 most-popular destinations to spend New Year's Eve for Indonesian travelers, with Kuta Bali the most searched-for destination based on the travel site's reviews and opinions submitted by native Indonesians.

The list for Indonesian travelers is based on the site's popularity index from searches made for the New Year holiday period between Dec. 27, 2014 and Jan. 4, 2015.

Unsurprisingly, Bali is still the most searched-for destination by Indonesian travelers with four of its regions — Kuta, Seminyak, Nusa Dua, and Legian — making their way onto the top 10 list.

Supporting the results of the study, one traveler commented on the TripAdvisor Travel forum on seeing in the New Year in Kuta: “All along the beach there will be non-stop fireworks; Kuta comes alive and it was the best New Year's Eve ever.”

Being the top choice among the top ten, staying a night in a hotel in Kuta costs an average of Rp 1,260,312 (US$100), skyrocketing 63 percent higher than usual during the New Year's Eve festivities.

However, travelers looking for a bargain can consider spending New Year's in Yogyakarta or Bandung, with both destinations registering declines in average nightly hotel rates, of 37 percent and 36 percent, respectively.

Quite the opposite, room rates in the capital city of Jakarta are expected to double over the New Year period, with an average nightly rate of Rp 1,940,858.

International destinations such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur also claimed spots on the list and are proving to be popular New Year's Eve destinations among Indonesian travelers.

Hotel prices in both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are expected to increase marginally, but those planning a trip to Hong Kong should be prepared for a seasonal skyrocketing hike in prices, with the average hotel stay coming in at Rp 6,538,579 per night, or 194 percent more expensive than the average rate throughout the rest of 2014.

“Many destinations are experiencing significant price hikes over the New Year when it comes to hotels. So it is worth doing your research before deciding on where to head for the celebrations,” TripAdvisor's Asia Pacific senior media relations manager Jean Ow-Yeong explained.
