200 drainage projects by PUB within the next 12 months: Vivian

A total of 200 drainage projects will be undertaken by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) within the next 12 months, said Minister for Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan on Thursday.

He said in a Facebook post, “All of us would have witnessed or may have been caught in the recent flash floods. The intense rainfall, especially in low lying areas, has overwhelmed the local drainage systems in these areas.

“We know where all these areas are, and PUB has been working hard on plans to improve their drainage capacity."

Vivian said that he has asked the PUB to “expedite the ongoing work on 170 projects and to commence work on 36 new projects within 12 months”.

He highlighted a project at Chai Chee Road, which will be brought forward from mid-2014 to the earlier part of the year with road raising projects to commence this weekend.

He also highlighted that the Alexandra and Rochor canals are currently being widened.

“While some works will be completed by next year, others will take longer,” he said, and warns that such projects will cause “inevitable inconvenience”. He hopes that the public will understand.
