800 tons of fish die, rot on Philippine fish farms

TALISAY, Philippines (AP) — More than 800 tons of fish have died and rotted on fish farms in a lake near Taal volcano south of Manila, with authorities blaming it on a sudden temperature drop.

The massive fish deaths started late last week but have eased. Officials have banned the sale of the rotting fish, which are being buried by the truckload in Talisay and three other towns in Batangas province, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources official Rose del Mundo said Sunday.

The deaths are unrelated to recent signs of restiveness in Taal volcano, which is surrounded by the lake where many villagers have grown milkfish and tilapia — staple foods for many Filipinos, officials said. The volcano and lake are a popular tourist draw.

Government volcanologist Allan Loza said Monday that 115 earthquakes were detected in Taal in the past 24 hours compared to an average of 10 to 15 quakes daily in recent weeks, a sign that magma is rising from within the small volcano. Such unrest has been monitored since April, long before last week's fish deaths, he said.

Talisay agricultural officer Zenaida Macatangay said an initial investigation showed the deaths may have been caused by the temperature change as the rainy season set in last week after a scorching summer, which also depleted the lake's oxygen levels.

Schools of fish were seen swimming in circles before they floated dead to the surface in huge numbers. The deaths have occurred in the past at summer's end but in much smaller numbers, Mendoza said.

Some Taal lake areas turned white due to the massive numbers of dead milk-colored fish. Workers covered their noses with their hands or clothing Sunday as they scooped up the rotting fish and placed them into sacks.

"Many were sad and devastated because they invested a lot in these fish cages," Talisay Mayor Zenaida Mendoza told The Associated Press by telephone.

More than 400 tons of milkfish have died in Talisay alone since Friday in 84 out of about 1,000 fish pens — lake areas about half the size of a basketball court that are fenced off by bamboo poles and nets. Damage has been estimated at $770,000 (33 million pesos), Mendoza said. About 400 tons more have died in the other towns.

I have no sure idea why this is happening. Only a vague idea. Maybe because of the radical change in the environment - climate, tectonic earthquakes, increase in temperatures on both extremes.

The environment is going nuts - maybe because of the accumulated effect of our carelessness and of us hurting the environment for many many decades.

And many also say that this carelessness of our regarding the environment, which causes our environment to become crazy nuts not following its usual normal schedule and being extreme - these happenings, are signs that we should not take lightly.

Either the second coming of Jesus is near, or our world is gonna be destroyed by our own carelessness with the environment - i do not want to sound like i am sure of which among the two we should believe - but either way, we're finished if we do not start to do something about it and be prepared and take necessary actions to address the issue.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:
I've been to Taal lake and was sudden to see the condition of the lake itself. Many fish growers and town people are using the lake for more ways than one and because of that it has been overused but under maintained and rehabilitated. The government again is pointing in the most easiest way out and that is to blame it to the weather.

using fish parts as ferlitilizer is a big no-no.... the wastes would be easily contaminated microorganisms that cause diseases like cholera or salmonella and etc. proper disposal in a ditch far from water sources and aquifers would be best (maybe even cremation) also climate change has gotten waay worse bcoz of human abuse if anyone is to be blamed it would beh mankind... :D soo... help reduce global :| o_O!

Ipaalala kaya ang kanta ng ASIN..

      Title: Masdan Mo (Ang Kapaligiran)
      Album:
      Artist: Asin

      Wala ka bang napapansin
      Sa iyong mga kapaligiran
      Kay dumi na ng hangin
Pati na ang mga ilog natin

      REFRAIN 1
      Hindi nga masama ang pag-unlad
At malayu-layo na rin ang ating narating
Ngunit masdan mo ang tubig sa dagat
Dati’y kulay asul, ngayo’y naging itim

Ang mga duming ating ikinalat sa hangin
Sa langit, ‘wag na nating paabutin
      Upang kung tayo’y pumanaw man
Sariwang hangin, sa langit natin matitikman

      REFRAIN 2
      Mayro’n lang akong hinihiling
Sa aking pagpanaw, sana ay tag-ulan
      Gitara ko ay aking dadalhin
Upang sa ulap na lang tayo magkantahan

      AD LIB

Ang mga batang ngayon lang isinilang
      May hangin pa kayang matitikman
May mga puno pa kaya silang aakyatin
May mga ilog pa kayang lalanguyan

      REFRAIN 3

      REFRAIN 4
Lahat ng bagay na narito sa lupa
Biyayang galing sa Diyos kahit no’ng ika’y wala pa
Ingatan natin at ‘wag nang sirain pa
‘Pagkat ‘pag Kanyang binawi, tayo’y mawawala na

The residents of Talisay must get ready for emergency evacuation either a huge volcanic eruption or a tsunami is going to happen there 115 earthquakes detected in the past 24 hours is not a good sign of things to come.

        Princess Lulu

Please. And do you think there's an invisible man up there doing all of this?
      • A Yahoo! User 11 months ago
There's no invisible man doing all this up there.. what lulu means is that the the magma level is rising causing the many earthquakes and aftershocks . So if there is an active volcano there in Talisay, the residents ought to be careful.

      Dear religious people,

This is NOT a sign of doomsday. This is not a sign that a god is going to fly down from the skies too.

Fish, birds and animals DIE everyday and everywhere RANDOMLY in large groups due to diseases or accidents.

It seems like it is happening MORE frequently because the media worldwide has chosen to report on this MORE frequently.

It is not happening more frequently. It has always been happening. It is just being REPORTED more frequently now.

Why on earth most people are saying it's end of the world? No one knows when is the end of the world and when will God will gonna destroy this earth.Im a Catholic but pls don't use the bible or God for all this bad things happening. Blame the people who are doing all this @#$% for making this world dying. God Love people...He is just reminding us that everything has an end and to remind us that he still control of everything. Things happen for a reason.

Dun be superstitous to religious like recent crazy preacher said what doomday on 21st May 2011.
All animals die because of climate changes and various reason that human brought harm to ecolo----.
Dun be surprised when one day Earth explode by itself not bcos of other planets hit Earth but we just duno what the hell we invent to cause destructive to our own Earth.
Look at Nuclear reactors happened in Japan, the harm was massive and imagine if some crazy scientist make more destructive weapon, we will be gone b4 u know what happened tomorrow.

      Johana

You religious people keep predicting about doomsday, just like that recent Harold Camping's may 21st prediction.

There is no doomsday ,don't worry.

Fishes and bird die randomly EVERYDAY, everywhere. It's just that it is not being reported frequently in the news.

      Get educated.

This should be the SIGN of HUGE DISASTER
    • Pretty  •  11 months ago
Birds and fishes dying in large groups is not a sign that the gods are coming back or flying down from the skies.

Birds and fishes dying in large groups is a sign that we might be taking up their territories and polluting their resources.

      Get educated.

      hhhhhhhhhhhhmmnnnnn

this is what we call TIPPING POINT

on one side the durability of nature (milk fish and lake)

      on the other end

      =high density stocking
=pollution due to chemicals and high amonia level of water due to
      over stocking
= low dissolved oxygen in water
=the shallowing of the lake due to silt deposits, shallow waters are easily
affected by temperature spikes and changes and results to fish stress

so what do we get? nature can only absorb so much, it will give in to put
up balance. so whatever life forms left in the lake will again thrive after
      nature corrects it.

      =======================

hala ang iba dyan mag predict naman ng kung ano ano
armagedon / end of the world at kung ano ano pa

      money making na naman hehehehehe

Filipinos, please quickly leave that place. Many a times, when masses of animals flee or die is because they detect disasters and respond to them faster than human. You can see trends in past cases. Pls flees for your life !

i wont say its the end of the world, but all this are just signs that a big disaster is on the way. its a reminder to us to repent and do good while on earth,

so do these dead fishes make it to restaurants, frozen and cheap???
    • Blueberry  •  11 months ago
This thing happens because of the too much leak of sulfuric compound from the active volcano in the middle of the lake which is not good for any living creature of the lake.
