Afghan protests erupt over Koran burning

Protesters hurling petrol bombs and firing slingshots besieged the largest US-run military base in Afghanistan, furious over reports that NATO troops burned copies of the Koran.

The enraged crowd shouted "Death to Americans" and "Death to infidels" on Tuesday as guards at Bagram Airbase, north of Kabul, responded by firing rubber bullets from a watchtower, said an AFP photographer, who was hit in the neck.

Hundreds of other people protested in the Afghan capital as security forces dispatched reinforcements in a bid to stop the demonstrations from spiralling out of control in the fiercely conservative Islamic country.

The US commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, apologised and ordered an investigation into a report that troops "improperly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials which included Korans".

"I offer my sincere apologies for any offence this may have caused, to the president of Afghanistan, the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and most importantly, to the noble people of Afghanistan," he said.

The White House also apologised, calling it "a deeply unfortunate incident" while US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta promised a swift investigation.

Two US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP the military removed Korans from the US-run prison at Bagram because inmates were suspected of using the sacred book to pass messages to each other.

"The material was removed because there was a concern that the detainees were communicating with each other," one US official said.

Allen did not mention how the religious materials had been disposed of, but an AFP photographer was shown partly-burnt copies of the Koran said to have been saved from destruction by Afghan workers within the base.

Allen's remarkably candid statement, apparently aimed at damage control after similar incidents led to violence and attacks on foreigners, was played repeatedly on Afghan television.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai in a statement said he "strongly condemns the burning of copies of the Koran by American soldiers" and had assigned a delegation to investigate the incident.

The Taliban, who have been waging a decade-long insurgency against Karzai's Western-backed government, also condemned the Koran burning, accusing the Americans of "hurting the religious feelings of one billion Muslims throughout the world".

Iran described the actions as "an insult to the holy Koran".

"The only solution to restore calm and stability is the swift departure of foreign troops from the country," foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said, according to the website of state television.

Allegations that NATO troops at Bagram had set fire to copies of the Muslim holy book were first reported by Afghans working at the base, a senior government official said.

A local police official said more than 2,000 people were demonstrating outside the sprawling US-run Bagram base at one stage.

The AFP photographer saw at least seven protesters hit by rubber bullets, some of them bleeding.

Sediq Sediqqi, an interior ministry spokesman, said Afghan security forces brought the demonstration under control and that by late afternoon it was over. He said one young protester had been wounded, but had no further details.

Last April, 10 people were killed and dozens of others were injured during days of unrest unleashed by the burning of a Koran by American pastor Terry Jones in Florida.

Allen's statement reflected concern over the impact of the latest incident in the country, where US troops are battling Taliban insurgents and supporting Karzai's government.

"I have ordered an investigation into a report I received during the night that ISAF personnel at Bagram Airbase improperly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials which included Korans," he said.

"When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them. The materials recovered will be properly handled by appropriate religious authorities.

"We are thoroughly investigating the incident and we are taking steps to ensure this does not ever happen again. I assure you -- I promise you -- this was NOT intentional in any way."

Allen thanked "the local Afghan people who helped us identify the error, and who worked with us to immediately take corrective action".

Last month, US officials scrambled to condemn four US soldiers shown in an online video urinating on the bloodied corpses of three Taliban insurgents.

The video, including one of the soldiers saying "Have a great day, buddy", served as a reminder of previous abuses committed by US troops during the war.

If the Afganistan muslims want others to respect their religion, they have to show similar respects to all other religions. I can never forget those stupid and selfish taliban insurgents who destroyed the valuable and irrereplacable historical stone statue of Lord Buddha in Afganistan.

Hag, I made a comment to Earth and 123 Handsome. It will answer your question.

Hag, if you don't see the comment I posted I will gladly write again since I make copies of important issues..Problems for the Qur’an began to occur during the reign of the 3rd political leader of Islam, whose name is Uthman (644 TO 656 CE). It appears that as the Islamic faith spread with military conquest across a large area, the soldiers were reading different versions of the Qur’an. These men wondered, "Is the Qur’an truly as pure as those close to Muhammad believed and taught?"The 2nd most trusted Hadith is called Sahih Bukhari. In Volume 6, Book 61, Number 510, the story about Muslim soldiers arguing about different versions of the Qur’an reads as follows: (Search on the referenced site to find the number "510" if you want to verify the written literature)."Hudhaifa was afraid of the different recitations of the Qur'an, so he asked 'Uthman, "O chief of the Believers! Save this nation before they differ about the Qur’an as the Jews and the Christians did before."In response to the request, the Caliph Uthman sent a message to Hafsah since she had the most important original manuscript sheets collected about 634 CE. We find written:"Send us the manuscripts of the Qur'an so that we may compile the Qur'anic materials in perfect copies and return the manuscripts to you." Hafsah sent copies to Uthman.Caliph Uthman had men who knew the Qur’an to assemble it again. We find written:Uthman then ordered four men to rewrite the manuscripts in perfect copies. After this had been done, the Hafsah codex was returned to her. "Uthman returned the original manuscripts to Hafsah."Having obtained this new version, Uthman ordered all other Qur’ans to be destroyed by fire. We find written: Uthman sent to every Muslim province one copy of what they had copied, and ordered that all the other Qur'anic materials, whether written in fragmentary manuscripts or whole copies, be burnt. This means that drastic changes occurred. After all, "Why were the other copies and fragments ordered to be burnt?" The answer is found in the original statement: "Hudhaifa was afraid of the different recitations of the Qur'an"Hudhaifa did not want different versions of the Qur'an.

It is not worth staying so long in Afghanistan because you waste so much resources which can be channel to help the US or European economy. It is for the Afghan to solve their own problems. The longer you stay the more bitter the locals will be against you.

US please leave and let the Afgans kill each other. The world will be a more peaceful place to live in thereafter

These protesters' action is against the word of Allah. Allah has expressly forbidden idolatry. Yet, these people have idolised a man-made print version of the word of their god. Do they think burning a few copies of the book can harm the message therein? If they did, then the message is very fragile indeed.
      • Joe Public 2 months ago
And so is their faith. Contrast that with the Buddhists as they watched their millennia-old monuments razed to the ground by the Afghan Taliban. Did they make any form of protest? They did not, because one of the tenets of Buddhism is to not attach significance to material things. Their philosophy is far more sophisticated than that of their aggressors and that's how their great religion has survived and thrived without the need for conversions through forced conquests.
      • A Poster 2 months ago
To compare Buddhism with Islam would be an insult to Buddhism.

It is never okay to burn religious material. It is not okay to completely disregard the religion, thoughts, and feelings of others but especially not when you are in such a precarious position to begin with. Where are these peoples morals, thought processes, and integrity? I mean seriously? I have friends from many countries, races, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, sexes, ages, and creeds. Some of the most beautiful, selfless, compassionate people I have known in my life are Muslim, and they do not deserve to be so heartily offended. They do not deserve how they have been treated since 9/11. How often have we complained because we have been deprived of something due to the actions of other? The actions of a few do not reflect the beliefs or the desires of the many.
That being said, the soldiers should be reprimanded for their behavior, but I am almost certain that senior officers gave the okay to act in such a disrespectful manner and they will get a slap on the wrist at the most.

What is more important are the teachings, and how it is practiced in daily life, not the bound paper where it is written.
Many, through the ages have done horrible things using reasons of religion, and ironically in the name of God; Christians, Muslims or whatever they affiliate themselves with.
The world in these technology age, should be free from prejudice, and made tolerant, compassionate, so we can all live free, as we want life to be, without hurting others.

Do we have complete morons in the military? We need to stop dumbing down the entrance qualifications. This and the SS flag debacle. Whether true or ... but most often false ... terrorists use stories about disrespect to the Koran and their prophet to incite violence and hate against America and their fellow Muslims - that's what they live for, their reason to exist. Forget the fact that the U.S. provides Korans, religious leaders, and goes to lengths so detainees are free to practice their faith. We can't win helping these people. They have been slaughtering each other for 1000s of years, what makes anyone think they will ever live in peace with the rest of the world.

Again, I would like it to be known that my next comment (The first few lines are my opinions, the rest I am quoting verses from the Qur'an , surely Muslims will not have any problems with that and in fact a few comments posted here advice me to read the Qur'an and that is what I am doing) is not to offend anyone, especially those in the Muslim community but at times the truth really hurts and people in general start flying over the handle bars so to speak but most will calm down, ponder and wonder..If only Muslims got as upset over the rape and slaughter of non-Muslims as they get over burned Qur'ans, we might see some unparalleled moral progress in the Muslim world. Qur’an 5:51—O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.Qur’an 9:73—O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination.Qur’an 9:111—Surely Allah has bought of the believers their persons and their property for this, that they shall have the garden; they fight in Allah's way, so they slay and are slain.Qur’an 9:123—O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).Qur’an 47:35—Be not weary and fainthearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost: for Allah is with you, and will never put you in loss for your (good) deeds.Qur’an 48:29—Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves.Qur’an 98:6—Verily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islam, the Qur'an and Prophet Muhammad) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al-Mushrikun will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures.

The Quran is full of details concerning the existence of human beings and the earth in general. It has facts that scientists are discovering up to now, so it is a reference book that should treasured in any way. Who knows!!!!!!! these inmates could have been passing on spiritual knowledge to one another. Its like those soldiers are fighting the Holy book and it values.
