Alexander Wang loves his apartment because it’s one of the few places he doesn’t feel “claustrophobic”.
The American designer has a loft in New York which is bright and airy, and has no clutter. He fell in love with the space because it was so unlike anywhere he’d lived before, adding it’s the one place he feels really able to relax.
“Having lived in New York, where you’re always out and your friends are always out because no one has enough space to entertain, I imagined an apartment where I could have my friends over and on the weekend not have to leave because I feel claustrophobic,” he explained to W magazine. “Where I would learn how to cook or do crafts projects.”
Alexander has opened his home up to the publication, and is proud of the minimalist black-and-white colour scheme he settled on.
The walls are white while the floor and blinds are all black, and comfy dark sofas are dotted throughout. The apartment has a cool and youthful vibe, which is exactly what the 26-year-old was going for.
Alexander’s friend Ryan Korban is a decorator and helped him create his perfect space. The pair have been friends for years and have a close bond as they’ve been through many of the same things.
“Ryan never had formal training in interior design and architecture,” Alexander explained. “And when I started my line, I didn’t have formal training or experience in fashion, so we shared a lot of the obstacles in setting up our own businesses and breaking into a world we felt was foreign to us. We had our own ideals and ideas about ways of doing things.”
Ryan added: “The sexiness and the youthfulness - that’s what gets me excited. Even the people at the top in fashion, even though they’re older, I see their desire to be sexy and young, and I feel that is lacking in the interiors world.”
