Ann Hui is optimistic about Chinese films

29 Mar – Hong Kong director Ann Hui admitted that she was surprised after being announced as the winner of Best Director at the recent Asian Film Festival held in Macau.

According to ECNS News, "The Golden Era" director stated that she felt like she did not quite deserve it, though was also honoured with the recognition.

"If it's meant for me, I will try to be positive and work harder," she enthused. "I feel like donating half the trophy to the filming crew for their role in making it a success."

Expressing optimism with the current path of Chinese cinema, Ann stated that it also has its own pros and cons.

"It's going well in the sense that it's very active and filmmakers are excited about making films. But at the same time, there will be difficulties, including the budget and the people involved. Everybody wants to be in the business, so some may not be very professional," she said.

Ann also added that the censorship still presents an issue to the creativity of filmmakers.

"We can't shoot whatever subject we like. But overall, the whole thing is good," she said.
