Anti-democracy group releases video threatening to blow up top cop’s car

A group calling itself Anak Malaysia Anti Demokrasi (AMAD) has released a video threatening to kill the inspector-general of police by blowing up his car, as calls grow for Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to step down as Malaysia's top cop.

In the 1.27-minute YouTube clip, a person whose face was blocked by an AMAD logo, and flanked by two others masked members read out the threat in Bahasa Malaysia while holding a piece of paper.

The narrator, whose voice was digitally altered, asked whether Malaysians could replace the Election Commission chief, Chief Justice and IGP through democratic means.

Answering “No”, he labelled the trio as "agents that derail democracy" before announcing that AMAD would kill the IGP by blowing up his car.

The narrator said that by doing do, government agencies would be afraid to commit crimes against democracy. He added that the people would eventually rise up and chose the non-democratic path.

As he ended the warning, one of the masked men pushed two toy cars in front of the narrator who then torched one of the cars with a cigarette lighter, followed by sounds of explosion.

The video, dated February 23 and titled “Peringatan kepada IGP” (A reminder to the IGP) has garnered about 5,600 views so far.

Yesterday, civil society groups joined forces to campaign for Khalid's removal for suppressing freedom of speech with arrests of opposition politicians and activists.

Electoral reform watchdog Bersih 2.0 and human rights group Suaram held a joint press conference to condemn the police's recent clampdown on those who expressed views critical of the government, including the Federal Court's verdict to uphold Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy conviction.

They plan to hold a peaceful assembly every Saturday outside the Sogo department store in Kuala Lumpur as an exercise of their freedom of expression in asking the IGP to resign.

This is the second video in less than two weeks featuring masked men threatening to “blow up” something in the country.

Police have launched an investigation into the first video which featured four masked men vowing to protest against the country’s judiciary by “blowing up” courts across Malaysia.

Police said they are working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to identify those behind the video.

The YouTube video, under an account called “Isis Malaysia 69", depicted the group reading out a statement from the back of a piece of paper with a picture of local actress Nora Danish.
