TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan's government says two senior officials have resigned over the loss of millions of dollars (euros) in a failed attempt to lure Papua New Guinea to switch relations from rival China.
The government says Foreign Minister James Huang and Deputy Premier Chiou I-jen are leaving their posts.
The resignations Tuesday follow revelations last week that Taiwan lost US$29.8 million (€19.2 million) in a failed 2006 attempt to establish ties with Papua New Guinea.
The money was given to two middlemen who promised they could lure the impoverished Pacific nation away from Beijing. One has since disappeared together with the cash.
President Chen Shui-bian has apologized for the affair, saying it brought disrepute to Taiwan.
