TOKYO - An earthquake rattled northeast Japan on Friday evening, but there was no reports of damage or danger of tsunami.
Japan's Meteorological Agency said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 and hit just off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo. It struck at a depth of about 30 miles (50 kilometers).
There were no reports of damage or injury from the quake, which also shook buildings in central Tokyo.
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake can be readily felt and can cause some damage to buildings.
Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.
