Report: Obama may delay Japan arrival next week

TOKYO – Japan's public broadcaster says President Barack Obama may delay his arrival in Tokyo to attend a memorial service for those killed in a shooting spree at Fort Hood, Texas earlier this week.

NHK TV reported Obama, initially scheduled to arrive next Thursday, may delay his arrival. The Japanese Foreign Ministry said an announcement would be made as soon as plans become final.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters overnight the president would attend the still unscheduled memorial service, and his travel plans would be changed accordingly.

Obama was scheduled to leave on a 10-day trip to Asia Wednesday, and was expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama next Friday in his first visit to Japan as president.
