Apple sets the date for its Asia Red Friday sale

The annual event designed to celebrate the Lunar New Year will take place on January 10.

On that date, and for one day only, the Apple website and official Apple Stores in Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand are expected to offer generously discounted Macs, iPods, iPads and accessories.

Expect quantities of sales items to be strictly limited and, knowing Apple, there could well be a surprise. For its US Black Friday sale it decided to offer gift cards with purchases rather than slashing prices, a move that received a lot of criticism.

However, during its annual Lucky Bag day in Japan, which this year was held on January 2, customers were lavished with gifts.

Called Lucky Bags because consumers have to accept pot luck when buying one -- they have no idea what's inside -- each bag contained either a MacBook Air, an iPad Mini or an iPod Nano, as well as a host of accessories and a specially designed t-shirt. And all for just ¥36,000 ($345).
