Area where NSF was attacked ‘problematic’: Police

The police has identified the area where a 20-year-old full-time National Serviceman was attacked and later died from his injuries as ‘problematic’, reported The Straits Times.

In particular, the Thai disco where Chen Zixuan sustained his injuries before he died in hospital, Club Nana, has been raided by the police several times before, the paper reported.

Speaking to representatives from the Secret Societies Branch (SSB) of the police’s Criminal Investigation Department, the broadsheet reported that the Central Mall-Central Square area, which hosts a number of entertainment outlets, is on police radar, and that raids are commonly conducted there.

It said that Clarke Quay and Boat Quay, which also boast rows of bars, pubs and clubs, have also been under their scrutiny.

“We have been monitoring these belts all along,” deputy superintendent of police Tan Yong Hong, who heads the SSB, was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Chen and three of his friends were attacked by five men at 6am last Saturday, three of whom have since been arrested and charged in court. Chen was later hospitalised but died from head injuries the next day.

The first two men to be arrested, 22-year-old Lee Boon Leong and 24-year-old Desmond Neo Han Wen, will appear in court on Monday, while Poh Chong Heng, 27, who was arrested later, will be seen on Tuesday.
