Aretha Franklin: Shocked by Houston's death

NEW YORK (AP) — Aretha Franklin believed Whitney Houston had overcome her demons and was primed for a comeback, which made learning of the troubled singer's death all the more shocking.

Franklin said she was watching TV in her hotel room in Charlotte, N.C., when she learned of Houston's death in a hotel suite across the country in Beverly Hills, Calif.

"I was sitting on the side of the bed," she said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show Friday. "I just jumped up off the side of the bed: 'What?! This could not be!'"

Franklin said she had seen recent video of Houston, "and she looked fresh, she looked healthy and she looked gorgeous. And I thought, 'Yes, she has conquered her challenges and she's on the way.'"

Now her fans should remember Houston for her artistry, Franklin said, and not focus on the challenges she faced with substance abuse.

Recalling how Houston's smile made her eyes twinkle, Franklin then recited a poem she wrote in Houston's memory:

    "Twinkle, twinkle superstar,

We don't wonder where you are.

Up above the world so bright,

Like a diamond in the night.

    Twinkle, twinkle, she stood alone.

    I can't believe that she's gone."

The Queen of Soul had long been a friend and mentor to Houston, who died last Saturday at the age of 48. She will sing at Houston's funeral Saturday in Newark, N.J.

Death of any human being is always a tough thing to mentally accomodate. But, at some point in ALL of our lives, we must take responsibility for our own actions. Never-the-less: Good night, sweet voice.

We should remember her legacy but also recognize her demons that ultimately led to her demise. If we choose to ignore her drug use, then it will be sure to happen over and over again.

Ya hate to say it. But with all the tragity that goes on. A lot of people don't learn from others mistakes. Remember the old saying "if your friend jumped off the roof are you going to do the same thing". YES
      • Eevie 3 months ago
They do not know how she died. It could be as simple as her falling asleep in the bathtub and not due to drugs. I guess we shall see.

you are so right., we don't like to look at the truth and that is why we continue to have so many people doing it over and over again.

Houston was a woman with the world at her finger tips. Adored, loved and respected for her tremendous talents. Sadly, her talents could not defeat her demons wheather self-inflicted or induced by others.
Many women take on relationships with reputed 'bad boys' and usually suffer the consequences sooner or later.
Its been reported that she went through 700 million dollars for drugs alone. An astonishing figure. If true, it is surprising she did not die sooner, although her voice and career died in the process.
So many talents in all fields of endeavors have died due to drugs. Drugs are the worst thing in any society. They destroy so many lives.
It is time that this country begins to change the laws for drug sales to the death penalty for selling any amount of drugs. The pushers are selling murder so why nor return the favor.

I agree with you up to the point of the murder statement. God will deal with those types of people sooner or later

Yes I think it is very important to reserve any conclusions and to recognize that many people who suffer with the disease of addiction do get and stay well. Many of us will die sober and it is possible that Whitney did. Either way she did seek help and had some healthy and glorious times in her life.

Out of all the posts, these are by far the most respectful and insightful as well as gracious. We are on the same page. Let's just continue to keep her daughter and family in our prayers so that they will be able to cope and heal as best as they are able to with the help of God. There is one scripture that I often think of when my friends and family and outsiders are facing personal trials. "We must speak consoling to the depressed, weak and the grieving -- God is the hearer of prayers and the God of All Comfort. Have a nice weekend.

Have you noticed all the pretenders coming out of the woodwork since Whitney Houston's death? Downright despicable !!!!
    • JP  •  3 months ago
Sorry Aretha, but so typical of you celeb divas to be completely out of touch. All I have ever thought of when I have heard Whitney Houston's name brought up on the radio or TV the past 15 years has always been something negative related to her drug abuse or domestic violence issues involving her good for nothing ex-husband. Please don't try to excuse away the prominent reason we are even discussing Ms Houston's death. It isn't because of her awesome performance at some show the night before. It is because of her irresponsible behavior due to drinking and drugging. I hope she does RIP.

Drugs and alcohol have been romanticized by the rock/pop industry since the sixties (actually even before that... remember Billie Holliday?), and have resulted in death after death of some great performers. This woman was one of them. How long is this going to continue to happen? To read articles throwing Whitney Houston's life away as just a "drug addict" is demeaning and belittling to the rest of her life and career. Drug addiction is a disease, not a curse; people don't want to become addicted to cocaine or heroin, they get trapped in it. Some people can find their way out, but many others, like her, can't. Judging her based only on her drug problem isn't fair; she had other attributes, notably her incredible voice, that I think the public should be more focused on.

drug users are worthless? wow! and you have no faults, i'm sure...smh, just because she and other addicts have an "obvious" problem, ppl like you think you are so high above them for being drug-free. But we ALL have our issues.

I want to know why the surprise? I saw the videos of her onstage what the hell was everybody on stage with her thinking someone should have stopped her she was making a fool of herself Her famous family where were they? She had serious issues. Now OMG the biggest disgrace an internet funeral come on are they all challenged? She sang about no one taking her dignity and she left this world without even that. Tragic shame drug use was a cover for some thing else. But addiction only has 3 outcomes LOCK UP LOCK DOWN. or DEATH. No one is immune to this disease money ,fame talent, dont save you.

In defense of Aretha, those who have friends and family members with substance abuse problems will overcome their demons. And, happily, sometimes they do. Death of a loved one is traumatic. Of course it is shocking. It has been shocking for me everytime I lost a friend or family member, even those who had been ill for sometime. It is a normal part of the grieving process.

I am amazed at the rude remarks here and the lack of charity.

Perhaps we should all stop talking about the drugs until the cause of death comes back. We should just concentrate on wishing her family well. RIP Whitney! We will always love you!

Aretha Franklin was Whitney's immediate family. She was her god mother. She knew Whitney alot more than the public did. She has every right to be shocked at the news.

Her story should remind women who are in relationships w/ men who use drugs to GET OUT....yes, she has free will...but she becamed addicted to Bobbie Brown and his desire for her to keep him company w/drugs. Ladies, it is not love if a man wants you to join him in a joint, a snort, a shoot up or anything of the kind! RUN FAST!!!

She did look better. Isn't anyone struck by the enormous coincidence of her daughter, booked into the Beverly Hilton under her mother's name, who had to be pulled unconscious from her tub the day before?

Whitney Houston didn't write the song 'I will always love you' Dolly Parton did.

Aretha Franklin: Shocked by Houston's death

Yeah, so were lots of people.

Aretha Franklin believed Whitney Houston had overcome her demons and was primed for a comeback, which made learning of the troubled singer's death all the more shocking.

And what made her come to this conclusion? Anyone close to Whitney Houston had to know she was still a mess. Also, she destroyed her once angelic voice with all the drugs. She wasn't making a comeback.

Aretha showed great "Disrespect" on Saturday when she claimed to have leg spasms so bad she couldn't go to her Goddaughter's funeral. Then she shows up at her own concert Saturday night and dances across the stage. Shame on you, Aretha!!

What were her "demons?" I've seen lots written about her having demons but were they talking about her drug abuse and/or something else? I'm curious about how and why she began using drugs in the first place. I wonder why someone with the world supposedly at their fingertips needs or wants to abuse drugs because the little that I understand is that drug addicts typically abuse drugs to escape the real world. Was her demon her husband and she was abusing the drugs to get away from him? It would be fascinating reading to see some serious and factual reporting on the why and how of her drug abuse and her other "demons." I'm still amazed at how she could hit and hold that note "...and I..." Impressive every time I hear it. I don't think anyone else on the planet could hit and hold that note, especially for the length she could hold it. WOW!
