    Asthma connected to fizzy drinks

Consuming too many fizzy drinks increases your risk of developing asthma or the severe breathing condition Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), new research suggests.

Researchers in Australia examined the health and soft drink consumption of 16,907 people aged 16 and over in South Australia during 2008-2010.

One in 10 drank at least half a litre of soft drinks every day, they found.

"The amount of soft drink consumption is associated with an increased chance of asthma and/or COPD. There exists a dose-response relationship, which means the more soft drink one consumes, the higher the chance of having these diseases", the researchers, led by Zumin Shi of Adelaide University, report in the journal Respirology.

In total 13.3% of those studied who had asthma and 15.6% of those suffering with COPD said they drank more than half a litre of such drinks every day.

Smoking further increased the risk of developing either condition, especially COPD, to the extent that a smoker who also had at least half a litre a day of fizzy drinks had a 6.6-fold greater risk of developing COPD than a non-smoker who did not consume them.

Better you do some research on the net and not just on hearsay. I had my share of close encounter with death and its not a pretty sight. As of now im taking salbutamol everyday and when im having severe asthma I take Salmeterol + Fluticasone Propionate they are both inhalers. As for the triggers, dust and sometimes the weather (both hot and cold).

Nabasa q lng na people who have asthma have different triggers. Like me, cockroach allergen, secondhand smoke & colds triggers my asthma. It is important to know your triggers so you can avoid that whenever possible. Fyi.. :-)

You cannot visit my house then. We have lots of roaches hiding somewhere. I wonder if you can use your roach detection skill for a living (i.e. pest control).

I develop asthma when i was working in the textile industry, the dust and humidity inside the factory almost killed me . I do not drink fizzy drinks that often, and what triggers my asthma is the smell of perfume, smoke, animal hair like dog and cats, stress if im overwork, seafood like shrimp or prawns, smell of paints.Sometimes, even the smell of a sweaty and smelly person triggers my asthma if i inhaled them.

@Judy.. stay from varnish, paint or gases and cover your nose when dust flown in the air and don't be over fatigue according to my friend. It will trigger your asthma.
Just prepare your spray ok. A lot of workers not only our place but outside our country but they are wise to maintain their selves of free from asthma.

      FYI

A soft drink (also called pop, soda, coke,[1] soda pop, fizzy drink, tonic, or carbonated beverage) is a non-alcoholic beverage that typically contains water (often, but not always carbonated water), a sweetener, and a flavoring agent. The sweetener may be sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, or a sugar substitute (in the case of diet drinks).

A soft drink may also contain caffeine, fruit juice, or both.

Examples of beverages not considered to be soft drinks are: pure juice, hot chocolate, tea, coffee, milk, and milkshakes. Beverages like Gatorade and Powerade may meet the definition of a soft drink but are usually called sports drinks. Red Bull (and variations) also may meet the definition, but are usually called energy drinks.

Soft drinks are called "soft" in contrast to "hard drinks" (alcoholic beverages). Small amounts of alcohol may be present in a soft drink, but the alcohol content must be less than 0.5% of the total volume[2][3] if the drink is to be considered non-alcoholic.[4]

Widely sold soft drink flavors are cola, cherry, lemon-lime, root beer, orange, grape, vanilla, ginger ale, fruit punch, and sparkling lemonade.

Soft drinks may be served chilled or at room temperature. They are rarely heated.

I believe it's not the drink, it is the temperature of the drink. People who drinks cold drinks i am sure can develop asthma. And how to treat it - excercise and simple accupressure... now the doctors will accuse me a quack, but i will say shame on them - I had the experience they got the theory.

    • Nida Regalado  •  Manila, Philippines  •  3 months ago
all softdrinks are highly acidic and will cause many chronic diseases including asthma plus more! take king salt to make blood alkaline at level 7.35 - 7.45 pH. its the most effective way to balance alkaline-acidic level in your body. If your blood is alkaline at this level, you have weapon to prevent most chronic diseases including cancers, asthma, hiblood, organ diseases etc...
