BCCI shoots itself in the foot .... again!

The numerous humiliating overseas losses and instances of players washing dirty linen in public in the last 10 months have seen the euphoria of Dhoni lifting the World Cup gradually turn into a sordid nightmare for Indian cricket.

A day after Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President N Srinivasan claimed there was no rift in the Indian team, reports suggest the board has roped in coach Duncan Fletcher to talk to the senior players and act as 'peace-maker'. This is another classic instance of the BCCI shooting itself in the foot with one of their volte-faces.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that there obviously is some kind of hostility between skipper MS Dhoni, vice-captain Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir; the role that Sachin Tendulkar has had to play in this entire drama is unclear, but there is every possibility that even the master batsman wouldn't have been too impressed with the Indian captain's recent statements regarding the seniors. For their part, Sehwag and Gambhir have both taken open digs at Dhoni as India's on-field woes Down Under have moved off it as well.

But what is most surprising is that Fletcher didn't see it fit to step in to stop these players from openly expressing their angst with each other. One can only imagine the fissures these squabbles have created in a team which is already short on confidence and morale as it has seen more failures than successes after winning the World Cup less than a year ago. The numerous humiliating overseas losses and instances of players washing dirty linen in public in the last 10 months have seen the euphoria of Dhoni lifting the World Cup gradually turn into a sordid nightmare for Indian cricket.

Fletcher should have had a word with Gambhir immediately after the southpaw said that India's win over Australia in the fourth match of the ongoing Commonwealth Bank Series shouldn't have been dragged into the last over, and should instead have been wrapped up by the 48th over. In response to this barb, Dhoni retorted in apparent reference to Gambhir that a 'set batsman' should take the responsibility of seeing the team home instead of putting the onus on others to do so. Ironically, as it turned out, it was Dhoni's mistake that led to Gambhir being run out in the tied match against Sri Lanka; and though the skipper admitted he messed up, India could have won the match had the opening batsman still been in the middle.

Dhoni then added further fuel to the fire when after India’s 110-run loss to Australia, he said Tendulkar, Sehwag and Gambhir were not playing every game because they are slow on the field and added they could break down fielding in the big grounds of Australia. The same logic apparently didn't apply in the Test series when Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman - two other senior players - were also in the side! This is yet another indication that something is amiss in the Indian camp.

To add further credence to that assumption, Sehwag then decided it was his turn to verbally attack Dhoni. Talking to reporters after India were defeated by Sri Lanka at Brisbane, Sehwag said the senior players had not been informed that their 'slow fielding' was an issue and added Dhoni had said the rotation policy has been put in place to ensure the youngsters in the team get a chance to bat on the Australian pitches with an eye on the 2015 World Cup. If one were to read between the lines, Sehwag was accusing Dhoni of not being truthful to the senior players on the actual need for a rotation policy.

Despite these hard-hitting allegations, Sehwag was at pains to deny that there was any rift in the team. "We are one unit and a happy unit. He (Dhoni) is the captain… He can say whatever he wants. He addresses the media, has been doing it for the last two years, and we are okay with it," he said.

The issue here is, if Sehwag was indeed okay with whatever Dhoni has to say to the media, he shouldn't have launched this verbal assault on his skipper in the public; not that it absolves the India captain for not being clear enough in his conversations with the senior players.

It is quite apparent the current world champions in the 50-over format are resembling a dysfunctional family and no one (the board, the captain, the coach or the senior players) has taken the initiative, at least in the public's perception, to either nip the problem in the bud or prevent the issue from spiralling out of control and into the public domain.

But, again, this shouldn't be surpirising because we are talking about a board that is more bothered about the money in its coffers and couldn't care less about reviewing the Indian team's humiliating whitewashes in Tests away from home against Australia and England. The BCCI also didn't blink twice before naming Rahul Dravid out of the blue in the one-day squad in England merely because he was the only in-form batsman in the Test series and hadn't officially announced his retirement from the 50-over format at the time. Dravid obviously knew what awaited him and took matters into his own hands as he announced his retirement from ODIs on the same day he was recalled for that format.

The BCCI was quite proactive in solving its row with Sahara India because it involved crores of rupees, and that's the basic intent of the Indian board instead of developing the game and showing responsibility towards its main stakeholders. Had the board and team management in Australia kept their eyes and ears open; this massive spill of bad blood in the public domain could have been averted, and India's embarrasment on the field wouldn't have spilled off it. It wouldn't surprise me if the BCCI is looking forward to the Indian Premier League and is assuming that once the glitzy money-making series gets underway, all that has happened to Indian cricket over the last 10 months can be brushed under the carpet and life can start anew.

If nobody else does so, the fans owe it to themselves and to Indian cricket, to ensure the humiliating losses in England and Australia as well as the verbal spats between the senior players aren't forgotten in a hurry and corrective action to restore some glory to the national team, are put into place sooner rather than later.

It is quite OK that something bad is happening with this current Indian cricket team.
It cetainly will open the eyes of some so-called experienced senior players, as well as BCCI selectors.
Now when India team is constantly getting defeated, it is high time there would be some "REFORMS" inside the team.
This present team is not able to win any T-20 or OD format matches. Thus, let's hope for some betterment in the future-games.

If India win there are no arguments and the team is united but if India loses no one takes the blame and responsibility and thus these rifts occur.BCCI is probably the worst cricket governing body in the entire world.

Do not waste time anymore. Select the team for next two ODIs as such Manoj Tiwari, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, R. Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav. No explanations required for selecting or dropping somebody. If Gambhir is non cooperative, replace him with Rohit Sharma. Otherwise team will be out of tri series finals. This was a disastrous tour like the one to England. Victory in the finals could bring back some of the lost prestige. Team cannot afford to remain divided on the field and every body needs to give more than 100 % .The opportunity to play more number of matches shall give some leads as to who could be successful in the next world cup to be held in Australia. Strong discipline needs to be maintained. And Captain needs the total support from BCCI, Selectors and persons like Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri.

It is pretty obvious -- and has been for a very long time now -- that BCCI is the underworld or Mafia of the cricket world. Their bullying tactics because of their financial might are as abhorrant as the Don Corleone(s) who run this BCCI.

I also find it very unfair that MS Dhoni has been singled-out, time and again, for Cricket India's post-worldcup self-humiliation -- on and off the field. So what is so wrong with Dhoni stating a fact regards lead-footed lethargy in fielding by some of the "near-pension" seniors ? Yes, that includes the Sainted Sachin ! It seems that he is innoculated for life against any criticism. Welcome to the real world : believe me, there IS life after Tendulkar.

MS Dhoni, on other hand, obviously does not enjoy the same (if any) protection against media (and now public) spewing their venom at him. But ha can look after himself, thank you very much. You see, he has one thing in abundance, something his so-called critics do not have : and that is intelligence. I am almost certain that he does not lose a wink of sleep thinking about all the sheer and utter nonsense written (and spoken) about him in media and on the streets. He is far above all that.

It seems that these so-called self-appointed (emphasis being on "self-appointed") cricket gurus, commentators, writers and media have, very sadly, been struck by dementia and early onset of Alzheimer's. Almost a year ago, these above-mentioned non-entities were drooling over this very same MS Dhoni -- the greatest thing since vada pau, bhel-puri and pani-puri..... put together. They used up every available superlative from Roget's Thesaurus to describe his (obvious) leadership qualities. The truth of the matter is that MS Dhoni is totally wasted as captain of this Indian team and a bunch of loose-cannons : he deserves much better than this dysfunctional unit of a mixture of has-beens and wannabes. Sadly, that is not going to happen any time soon.

As to Virender Shewag "being okay" with MS Dhoni addressing (all) the press-conferences, let us be very honest : Dhoni, apart from Rahul Dravid (who, very luckily, is not part of this on-going natak) is the most eloquent spokesperson there is, or has been, in Indian cricket.

Take care and be happy. As I said above, there IS life after Tendulkar. Let us not imprison this great cricketer (and humanbeing) with our selfishness -- wanting him to go on and on. Will there be another (cricketer) like Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar ? Not in our lifetime, no.

True..Dhoni is actually wasted surrounded by criticism...selfishness...treachery...irritations..etc etc surrounding him...Any human for that matter would go haywire...
Sadly, SELFISHNESS does rules the roost as of now in the team :(....The filthy political keedas needs to uprooted completely...Else the result is A DEAD END ...

Who wants to play international cricket; there is more money to be made by playing IPL for 3 hours against club level bowlers. it wont be long before most of the cricketers would decline to play for India and just focus on IPL

before the world cup win, Indian cricket board and the selectors were working hard to bring the best team for the world cup. but after the world cup win, none of them is bothered about the team and players. so saaaaaad!.

As a selfish patriot I will keep Dhoni not as a person but as a very gifted alrounder in all the formats of the game till he remains capable of coping. He is a non sticking sort and will never linger on. But I would like to selfishly capitalize on this all-rounder's these capacities better than most available wicketkeepers, good handy batsman, cool clear thought process, great endurance and totally unselfish approach. I like my country to preserve with CLASS + FORM at any point of time and not fall prey to connivance of uncalled for comments to destabilize the team.

India is capable of quickly turning something world-class into third-class. Including cricket. Once upon a time World No. 1 and now down in the dumps in all three forms of the cricket game - tests, 50:50 & 20:20. The bickering, jealousies, politics and possibly also corruption in the cricket administration and the key players will definitely be the last nail in the Indian Cricket coffin.

Stupid, insipid, shameless BCCI. Pimps are a much more honorable lot compared to these guys.

The one and only reason for all these failures and accusations is the incapability of BCCI to handle matter in appropriate time and way. The culprint also includes not only BCCI but also the media. BCCI instead of disciplining and reprimanding palyers (whoever it may be) when they fail to deliver, maintains a "washing off hands" policy. As for media is concerned, making monday night quarterbacks as god and critizing the genuine failures. Over-hyping simple issues and ignoring vital issue are media's routine. Above all, too much money poured on to the players kiils their moral responsibility. In total, time has come for a complete overhaul of Indian cricket.

An Indian team should understand pointing fingers on our team mates point fingers from all over the cricket loving nations & fans. This is absolute shame for not only the cricketers but to us the people of India. Proudness of our nation depends on you all 11 of them out in the field, don't disappoint us please........

Abhay and Candyfloss, many thanks for your kind and appreciative comments. I was (and still am !) really expecting a tirade of abusive comments because I have taken a certain (!) name in vain. So your comments made my day ! Thank you both. It seems that "his" name should be praised only in hushed, reverential tones. I hope people will forgive me for not subscribing to that. Let us all, peacefully and in a civilized manner, agree to disagree.

During (and even before) the the World Cup (2011), a lot of the members of Team India (Suresh Raina, amongs others, comes to mind) were jumping up and down saying "Let us win it for Sachin !" Win it for Sachin ? How about winning it for India ?? Is one individual, as good a player he might be (or might have been !!) bigger than the game ? Bigger than the country ? Not for me.

Also, last year, ex-Pakistan cricketer,Shoaib Akhtar, in his book, "Controversially Yours", suggested that, and rightly so, that Indian batsmen, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were not match winners – unlike the great Viv Richards, Brian Lara or Ricky Ponting. So what’s wrong with saying what you think and/or believe ? Though I have to say that Shoaib was being somewhat unfair to Dravid : he has played a few (not many) matchwinning knocks in his time.

Recently (and everyother day still) these self-appointed so-called cricket pundits have been harping on and on about, and suggesting (!) that Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman are past their sell-by date and hence should make way for younger so-called talent Yes, VVS has been stuttering recently, but so has India's anointed patron saint of cricket. So why no mention of him ? While we are at it, how about the oh-so fragile Zaheer Khan who seems to breakdown more often than a second-hand Lada car ? So, you cricket gurujis, let us be fair and honest (?) and get things into right perspective. What is good (or otherwise) for Dravid and Laxman, should be good for Tendulkar too.

I can go on and on here about the despicable BCCI and the dictators who run it, but that can wait for another time.

Take care. (Or may be, I am the one who should !!)

BCCI slelectors selected a team based on their past performance and thought they gave the best team to beat Aussies hands down. But the defensive attitude of the captain along with poor batting form of the so called stalwarts of the team caused a steep downward slide. When the tension arose, the team confidence and apparent units showed the signs of crack. Here the role of coach is very important. Mr. Fletcher sorely lacked in taking control of the situation. He looks like a floater rather than a guide in the team. That spells a disaster for the team. Even before we talk about the players, it is time to replace the coach. It is the job of the coach to steer the team in right direction. As a cricket fan we dont see any indication of a visible correction to the course.

all these talks of seniority in cricket team does not make sense. Whoever plays a bowler irrespective of his age or seniority has 50/50 chance of getting out every time. To avoid this kind of problem in future ICC should consider over 30 vetaran cup. BCCI should lobby for it. Under 19 team . regular team . a over 30 team should solve ego problems and pathetic situations like dropping of Ponting or resting Tendulkar. players in over 30 team can play as long as they want sometimes till they open their account like Sachin is playing is for his 100 th 100.

We are like this only with short term memory loss. How youngsters must have been coping in the dressing room. BCCI is actually a cash surplus bank........which just want add more & more...isn;t it

BCCI must address the millions of fans about these humiliating defeats. The reason for the defeats, how are they going to rectify and their future plans must be adressed. What do they think of the fans? We're not fools.

Dhoni's decision may be right or wrong, but before discussing this first discuss the reason for failure of seniors in recent series. Can seniors say because Dhoni took this decision we did not play? Otherwise let them explain the reason for their failure and then speak about dispute among team members
