Local fans react over LionsXII NS snub

Local football fans Yahoo! Singapore spoke to have voiced their opinion on the recent National Service-LionsXII saga.

It was reported in The New Paper that only 15 players travelled to Ipoh on Monday for their Malaysian Super League (MSL) match against Perak on Tuesday evening, with Hariss Harun, Yasir Hanapi, Shakir Hamzah, Safuwan Bahrudin and Khairul Nizam only able to join up with the squad the match day itself due to NS commitments.

Players who are Full-time NS servicemen (NSF) have been utilizing their annual leave for away fixtures this season and it has been revealed that the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has rejected a season's worth of leave applications by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) before the season started.

Mindef spokesman Colonel Desmond Tan has made it clear in his TNP quote that the LionsXII players will not be excused from their NS duties.

"Where exigencies of service permits and subject to the merits of each case, Mindef allows national sportsmen, who are supported by the SSC, Full-Pay Unrecorded Leave (FPUL) to represent Singapore in selected major international competitions," he said.

"The MSL is a football league and not an international competition. Mindef does not grant FPUL for participation in the MSL."

This has sparked a big debate among the local football fraternity.

Dave Law, a Business Development manager, told Yahoo! Singapore that authorities should start putting into action what they promised and blamed National Service for stunting the growth of our athletes.

He lamented: "One hand we are talking about supporting local sports. On the other hand we are killing them off.

"National Service is singlehandedly responsible for the sporting death of many aspiring potential medal winners."

Justin Mark Roy, a follower of local football, believes playing for the country - albeit not in an international competition - is a form of national service itself.

"Playing for your country is a service, be it in any sport," he declared.

"If NS continues to be a restriction to our talents, then our field of sports, arts and sciences will all suffer."

While some are disappointed by the lack of support from the NS bodies, there are others who understand and back Mindef's decision against granting leave to the LionsXII players.

Yahoo! Singapore Facebook reader Muhd Khalis Rifhan said: "Lets be fair to Mindef. LionsXII is not the Singapore national team. So this ruling make sense.

"LionsXII is a club and should be treated like one and not be accorded status like a national team."

Yahoo! Singapore reader WP added: "Good decision by Mindef and SPF. Don't waste time and resources on sports where we cannot excel. Singapore football is nothing but rubbish."

They have spoken. What's YOUR view?

I couldn't agree more with Muhd Khalis Rifhan that the lions XII is not a represented National Team of Singapore. Besides a national team must consist of multi-racial instead of almost a single race. No disrespect to FAS but this is the fact, unlike badminton or table tennis, soccer is filled with 11 players. Sundram, you're a joker!! Please choose wisely.
The S'pore National Team cannot and will not go far if there is no unity within Singapore.

so table tennis has malays and indians? typical comment, use your blains, lah.

        Lol!
      • Yacob Iqbal 3 months ago
Speak for yourself, like I said, football consists of 11 players- the choice is wider compare to other sports. By all means, if there are Malays, Indians or Eurasians in the Table Tennis or Badminton. A good example is Sepak Takraw, only 3 is maximum. Am I bias? pumpkin.

hello, are you an ignorant overpaid politician?
        1) since when did national team must have a racial quota? go ask the water polo team. they won 24 gold medals in sea games. Tell them they don't have unity. Tell this to your MP.
        2) Why are you criticising Sundram for not choosing a more racial integrated team since u agree his LionsXII is not a national representation. Pls ask ur MP who is coaching the national team.

I don't understand why footballers need to go for NS when they're training to get fit for the matches.
I suggest a NS course that is spreaded out, so that footballers can train for the team, at the same time doing their NS.
      • kk 3 months ago
NS is not an idividual training and performance. It is a team work amongst the group. You just can spread out the courses. Please understand method of the training of our NS.
Serving NS is a pride as our national sport.

Why should footballers be given this privilege ? Meaning any Tom , Dick and Harry that play ball games need not go to NS ahh ? You will be surprised that many National Sportsmen are "Geng KIng". always looking for all sorts of nosense excuses to take time off !!!!

I'll be waiting for the day when we have a young football talent signed by an EPL club and in the next year he has to disappear for 2 years+ due to NS call-up, ending with a break in contract, debt outstanding for the young, talented Singapore footballer in the name of National Service.

It will be an interesting story to tell after that.
      • Rumour 3 months ago
Ya correct you wait long long... Singapore football is rubbish.
      • Wonderwoman 3 months ago
I think you need certain ranking for the national team in order to play in EPL.... I won't say our football is rubbish, but it just seems to be very distant...

This is NSF = NDS (National Dis-service to Sports). As if war is imminent or SG is at war with the neighbours. Stop those wayang2. Let the players go play for the country, but prolong there NSF accordingly.

One of the way to allow deferment to sportsmen is to extend their liability pass 40 years old. If they want to be defered, then to be fair they have to "pay" back later on when they are no longer fit for national competitions by serving longer.

Need Exit Permit for LionsXII NS guys? No problem lah, iF ONLY one player's father is the Defense Minister, or uncle is Colonel Desmond Tan loh. No relationship? Then maybe Sundram propose to label 'Mindef' Logo on the players' jersey, can or not?
    • Goh  •  Singapore, Central Singapore  •  3 months ago
Doing NS is a sacrifice S'porean males have to go through. No doubt about it, Now can anyone see the stark difference between a Foreign Import Talent & the Local Talent. This's only one glaring example. Think about it.
    • Rumour  •  Singapore, Central Singapore  •  3 months ago
Yahoo, you want to make me the public enemy of local football fans is it? Lol, just kidding. Ok anyway thanks for including my comment in the article. In fact I'm honour to be actually be heard of my opinion. Sadly but truly just look at where our football stands at the international arena. Standing below 100? After all the so call "hard work/effort" being putted in since many years ago, we still cannot make it through to the top 50. I believe in the next 10 to 20 years time, the stone will still be left unturned.

So does Mindef grant all national sportsmen deferment? What about non sports talents?
Deferment is bad for morale in the unit. It is disruptive for the others who have to carry the weight of those who are not around. Is that fair?
The solution lies not in the present arrangement but Mindef or the public can think of a solution which is fair not only to the sportsmen but to those who are not defered.
    • tan  •  3 months ago
Sundram should ask Patrick Tan how he did it.

Yahoo, can you please find out how many of our soccer players involved are 'meaningfully' employed by Mindef or the SAF? How many are 'key' appointment holders, if any?

Also why is it that they get time and days off when they play for SAFSA and even for their camps? What kind of double standards are they practising?

The State owned Medias won't dare reveal such details.

      Lol!
