Toothless LionsXII need to work on bite

    COMMENT

LionsXII may have won their first match of the season, but looking back, coach V Sundramoorthy must have wished he could turn back time.

Because frankly, the home team badly needed someone like Sundram in his glorious heydays to inject a creative spark and convert the home domination into goals.

LionsXII found the net twice but it is evident that the team is lacking a natural front man -- a goalpoacher of Sundram's abilities during his heyday.

It says a lot when they needed an own goal in the first half to take the lead despite the domination and constant supply of crosses into the box.

Even Shahdan Sulaiman's goal in the second half was a gift from the visitors, after their goalkeeper fluffed a cross.

Other than that, LionsXII struggled to create any meaningful chance of note. Suffice to say, against more solid sides in the Malaysian Super League, the result would have been very different given the same performance.

The poor goal return of the team needs to be addressed but coupled by injuries to Agu Casmir and possibly Khairul Nizam, and the lack of ability to bring in new players, perhaps Sundram needs to think out of the box.

    Option 1: Khairul Amri

Amri is of course recovering from a career-threatening injury and has yet to feature for LionsXII. However, many fans will remember the diminutive striker for his all-important goal against Thailand for the national team in the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship. His return to full fitness is crucial, but unfortunately that is not something within Sundram's control.

    Option 2: Hariss Harun

Admittedly, Hariss is not renowned for his goal-scoring abilities. However, I have seen him play in advanced roles for the Young Lions and the U-23 team before and it's clear  he can threaten with his charges into the opposition box. For a player of his attributes, perhaps all he needs is to be to mentally conditioned to play in a forward role.

    Option 3: Gabriel Quak

Gabriel has most often played as a left-sided winger, but possesses the abilities to play upfront as well. His tireless running also makes him a tricky customer inside the box. While I have not seen him being deployed as a lone striker before, he is certainly useful as part of a striking duo should Sundram decide to play a more traditional 4-4-2.

So with the next match against Sabah in Kota Kinabalu less than four days away, the challenge is on Sundram to prove his tactical acumen to improve the goals return of LionsXII.

    =======================================================

Best moment of the match: The final whistle. Kuala Lumpur piled the pressure on LionsXII for the better part of the last 20 minutes and it was a relief for all when the home side held on for a historic victory after the 17-year hiatus in Malaysian domestic football competition.

Most heart-breaking moment: It was painful to see young striker Khairul Nizam stretchered off the pitch after coming on as a substitute himself.

Man-of-the-match: Captain Shahril Ishak enjoyed a great outing despite being played out of position. He did well enough to hold up play and thrilled the crowd with some of his silky footwork.

Funniest moment of the match: With less than ten minutes to go, Shahdan Sulaiman had to put the ball out to allow a team-mate to receive attention from the physio. From the middle of the park, he smashed a half volley… straight into the visitors' dugout. It earned some cheers and sniggers from the crowd while the player sheepishly apologised.

Get Frederick Mendy in the team. He's 100 times better than the useless Agu Cash mere.

I think Fandi Ahmad will be the most suitable coach for the LionXII team. He have vast most experience if compare Sundram. Please consider if you want the KALLANG ROAR to come back again. Cheer Singapore.

they'll take another 2 years before they can really compete thanks to s-league they have become low level. now once they start competing with better players consistently they'll get better.

      coach Sundramoothy,
your choice of first XI players representing S'pore is rather myopic. No disrespect to all, in the 70's, 80's and into the 90's; I see a balance of all races in the national team becoz it is called the SINGAPORE SOCCER NATIONAL TEAM and not otherwise.
It seem that you lack the vision to pick potential players of other races besides the Malays (except Gabriel Quak, then again the only Chinese in the team); what happen to the Indians, Eurasians and other mixed races?
To stand out as a national team means equal opportunities for the rest of the races to represent the country. You did not have the privilege nor perhaps the dedication to search all over the island to spot those talented players. Maybe it is your own complacency or lackluster that hinders you from picking "others".
When I was younger, I truly enjoyed the matches played by the NATIONAL TEAM in the 80's and 90's. The new millennium players onwards to present day were/are tasteless, spoil brad, ill discipline, copy-cats and in my own opinion, not worthy to don the national jersey until they "come of age".
The coach and the management need a TOTAL RECALL to examine and study the past, present & the future of our National Soccer Team. To be frank and honest with you, Sundram & FAS, this ain't the Lions, neither are they cubs; they are juz a bunch of monkeys running wild on the pitch.

So Sundram, please hunt for your Lions and their cubs to play on the pitch and not monkeys & chimpanzees to fill their shoes

Come on Lion. I still have trust in u people.. Ignore those football experts! They are too good to be true..it's still early and u have lots to prove. Bring back the dream team. Play with ur heart. Dun be a disgrace to local sports. It would be huge blow if we need players from China to replace u guys..best of luck.

Seriously i think its better to import 11 players from China than seeing this bunch of primary school kids standard playing.

Maybe he should recall the service of Quek Kim Song and Fandi Ahmad as strikers...

The LionsXII team goal poachers are all selfish. They are all going for glory and not thinking that to win convincingly they must play as a TEAM and not to INDIVUALISE themselves. They would have won KL by at least 4 or 5 to 1 had the goal poachers used their brains and pass the ball to the player who would have most likely have scored. It was clear that the LionsXII did play better than KL. Coaches and Technical Staff for LionsXII, should re-iterate to the boys that indvidualisation by any player should be stopped and to pass the goal scoring chance to the player that has the most likely chance to put the ball in the net. Teach them not to be greedy or selfish and not to go for glory when they dont have a chance to score, after all the aim is the win the opposing team at all cost. Nevermind if you're a Brazilian. But you're NOT. Play passing Lah! The team of the seventies did just that, they played alot of passing even though they had superb dribbling skills but never individualise themselves. When a goal opportunity came, they would pass the ball the the most likely player to score and he DID score. Suggest the LionXII take alook at the KL game and compare it to the Seventies team video takes. The key is no INDIVIDUALISATION!!!!!!!!

Lions XII.... take this seasons as a warmup start in the league. This new generation of Lions need years to be groomed to be a champ like what our sharped tooth lions were during Fandi, Malek, Sundram, Borhan, Jan Jung, Abbas Saad and Alistar Edwards. Now Malaysians Tigers are not afraid even if they are in the Lions Dens.

Hmm, agree with most of the comments. B4 anything, we should at least acknowledge the boys' effort...But, its so disheartening to see against such opp, they cant play neat football...juz like what we saw in the Sea games, short passes were not crisp enuf, long range balls were ok, but first touches look rusty...thought the Youth olympic boys got better passing and first touches.
Shahril Ishak had been playing in the Indo league but hes not showing hes better than 2 yrs back. He needs to reallly shine to make the team flow.
Anyways, I hope Sundram will put in more emphasis on ball play though of cos we can play to our strength(long balls) at the right time...
They are our team after all..no points won whacking them unnecessarily...just hope they know they are carrying on the legacy of old..take pride in playing and juz hope 1 or 2 magician will come out to give us the buzz that we need when watchin them play...Sundram, u know what we want....We want the kind of team that u used to play for...Dun worry abt the results...Get the football right...the results will definitely come...ADB...Good luck in Panampang...!!!
