Top 5 Drool-worthy Smartphones at CES 2012

This year's CES 2012 saw a whole range of smartphones showcased on the floor. Brands like Samsung, Motorola, Sony and LG to name a few pulled out all the stops with one connective thread weaved through them — the Android platform. Check out our top 5 picks below and you can be sure we're keeping an eye out for these devices to hit our shores.

Samsung Galaxy Note

The Samsung Galaxy Note sits pretty between the lines of a tablet and phone. It features a 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED display, 1.4GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera on the back and runs on the Android 2.3 platform. The device also includes an S Pen (Advanced Smart Pen) for easier use. You can get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy Note at the recommended retail price of RM2299 from Samsung's Elite Partners listed on their Facebook page.

LG Spectrum

The LG Spectrum runs on the Android 2.3 platform with word of an upgrade in the second half of this year. This device has a 4.5-inch high-resolution display, an 8-megapixel camera, 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and comes with 4G connectivity. If you have a birthday coming up, now would be the perfect time to drop hints to your friends in the U.S. as the phone is going for USD80 on Amazon.

Huawei Ascend P1 S

Dubbed as the 'world's slimmest smartphone', makers of the Huawei Ascend P1 S wowed crowds at the CES 2012 two weeks ago. At only 6.68mm thin, the phone outdoes the Motorola Droid Razr's density clocked at 7.1mm. The Ascend P1 S rocks the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p video capture and is powered by a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor. So far, there is no official word on the pricing or availability but some say the phone's debut in the Asia Pacific region could be in April.

Sony Xperia Ion

A first for Sony, the Xperia Ion smartphone is one more device running on the Android Gingerbread platform. It has a 4.6-inch display, a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU as well a 12-megapixel camera encased in a super thin design. Those in the U.S are expecting the Xperia Ion to arrive sometime in the first quarter of this year. On the local front no price or availability has been announced.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx

The Motorola Droid Razr Maxx is an improved version of the original Droid Razr phone but with one tweak — a larger capacity battery (3300mAh). At the helm is the Android Gingerbread operating system. Noteworthy specifications include a 1.2 GHz processor, 32 GB of storage split evenly between the phone's internal storage and its microSD card as well as front and rear-facing cameras. Unfortunately, there are doubts that the Droid Razr Maxx will ever be released in Malaysia, but if you have family or friends in the U.S. - this is definitely one device you should get them to check out.
