1,200 Singaporeans give up their citizenship yearly: DPM

Around 900 Singapore born citizens and 300 naturalised citizens give up their citizenship yearly, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Teo said that renunciation rates for both citizens born in Singapore and foreigners who take up citizenship were "low" at 0.1 per cent or less, reported Channel NewsAsia (CNA)

According to CNA, the given renunciation rates were for the years between 2007 and 2011.

Teo also offered reasons as to why people chose to give up their citizenship. "The reasons for emigration vary. Some emigrants leave for family reasons, because of marriage or to reunite the family members overseas, while others do so for a different living environment," CNA reported him as saying.

He added that every application for permanent residence or Singapore citizenship is "evaluated holistically" on a range of criteria, which includes economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile, and length of stay in Singapore, according to CNA.

Teo also reiterated that it is compulsory for all Singapore citizens and permanent residents who own HDB flats to sell them if they renounce their citizenship, reported CNA.

I have live in USA,Europe,Indonesia and China. If anyone think Singapore is bad go overseas and stay. I know people who came back or abort their plan. The grass on the other side always look greener and not untill you are there, than it will turn grey.

It will be interesting to know which country the PR migrates to after getting their profit from sellng the HDB flat.
Personally know a few who migrated back to own country, claiming Singapore government stupid enough to let them do that so why not. Sadly, I agree with them.

COE at $78,000. 3 rooms hdb $400,000! From Marine Parade take taxi to Robinsion rd cost $18++. Drive my old car to CDB, ERP makes me poorer by $5+.
      Die standing!
If I have that chance, I do the same!!
      • Ancient 2 months ago
        ya die c0ck standing..
      • No Door Wonder ! 2 months ago
@Rocky. Pity that you are suffering. tell you what, I can give you a good suggestion. The COE can buy a new Camry in Ho Chin Minh City Vietnam, Taxi fare is real cheap, S$400,000 can buy you a private apartment about 130msq there. Why don't you live in Ho Chi Minh then.
By the way, you are so poor that you can only afford an old car and have to pay ERP plus high parking fees in CBD. That is why you complain about the government so much. Poor thing.

Unlike you, I am rich and so I don't complain about the government. I go to work with BMW ! I take Bus, MRT & Walk.

Please try Vietnam, things are much cheaper there and you should be VERY happy there.

So low? Anyone believe so? I do believe that many didn't return to Singapore or just keeping the Singapore passport for easy travel or still have their elderly parents here. Those who left Singapore for good are the real talents. Many of them are local born Singaporean. I do know quite a numbers who are very successful in business or management in MNC in other country, married a local wife and settled down. Many of them always told me the same story, we love Singapore, we prepare to die for my COUNTRY when we serve NS, but do my COUNTRY love me? Care for me? My COUNTRY love FT (adopted child) more then me (the one born in Singapore). Here I am FT, who am I in Singapore?

I have three sons and two daughters - one son and his family live in Toronto, Canada, the other son with his family resided in San Francisco and my daughter and her family live in the UK. I spend several months each year visiting all of them and discovered that the cost of living in both the US and the UK are much cheaper than in Singapore. The healthcare system in Canada is simply out of this world, with the US ranking second and the UK with rooms for improvements. Food is unbelievably cheap, costing less than half and even one third of that in Singapore especially dairy products and fresh fruits. Houses which would be considered as "Villas" by Singapore standard are 10 to 15% as what we would have paid in Singapore. Branded goods from countless outlets and fram produce are so cheap that practically has become a paradise for shoppers and food lovers. There is absolutely no worries as to old age care or medical cost. I really do not blame younger Singaporeans who had studied in these countries not wanting to return home. Singapore being a world class nation ? ..... my foot !!
Much as I have great love for Singapore, I fully understand the reason for more younger generation Singaporeans settling in these countries especially after receiving their higher educations there. There are many PRCs, Indians, Pakistanis who simply make Singapore as a sprinboard in migrating to these countries, but unfortunately the Singapore government simply refused to accept the fact.

Sure or not? I knew of at least 10 PRC women directly who stay in the east, can't write or speak a word of english, worked as a hawker asistant, waitress, beer promoters, ktv singers, masseur in a small beauty salon etc.. can also get their PRs & citizenship between 2009 & 2010. After that can sponsor their children & their aged parent to SG also. So Ah Teo dun bullshit leh. Nuang Nuang Sien, Muay Pai Seh meh.

i also been thinking of giving up my pinky for a very long long time well i still have 2 more years to decide :)

there alot of reason why people want to give up pinky these are some of the reason

      1. when old we are on our own no no money no talk going to burden the children as they already struggling with their own life!

      2. everything so expensive when reach old age no confident got job for us!

3.medical so expensive if go 2 major operation our cpf, medisave, saving gone with the wind!

3.dont want my future children to serve NS :)

      4. move to a greener grass where medical is free and education also and best part got pension!

5.less crowded, people less stress less struggling more time for family more happy!

6.lost hope and faith in the currrent garment for more then 20year already:)

7.i want to retire at the age of 55year maybe work once a week :)

8.i want to feel my cpf money at the age of 40year old(thats 2 more year) and pay for the house here :)

this is the basic reason why people are leaving :)

      cheers!

Singaporeans are beginning to get fed up for being disadvantaged citizens against foreigners in Singapore and not being to enjoy their retirement and CPF money, of cause they will leave. See, even the FT who taken up citizenship also decide to leave. Don't say 0.1% of Singaporeans leave, this is rubbish. Why not show the percentage of FT who took up citizenship and then changed their minds and leave? Who are you trying to fool?
    • Tonie Tan  •  2 months ago
How many of you want to leave? Let's take a vote, if YES click on my 'like' or 'thumbs up' above
    • Thunder  •  2 months ago
The best way to get out is for youngsters to go overseas for tertiary study and don't come back after graduation. Apply to get your parents over, like what the PRCs did to bring their aging parents over to Singapore.

This place has no future for our local born next generation.

      Pappies kenna sai.

If Singapore is good why would ppl renounce....har!
    • RED LIZARD  •  Singapore, Singapore  •  2 months ago
      The reasons not mentioned :

      1. Prosecution by gov for political reasons
      2. High living standards
      3. Freedom
      4. Skip NS
      5. Quality of life, real work life balance as opposed to lip service here
      6. Better future for offsprings
      7. Less stressful
      ...
      .
Last but not least, makes no difference either stay or migrate since either way feels like treated as 2nd class citizen...
    • b!tchymitchy  •  2 months ago
I wanted to know those naturalized citizens on how long they hold their "citizenship" before they renounce it...
    • DarylG  •  Singapore, Singapore  •  2 months ago
It all boils down to the big question, How do you think your being treated as a born and bred citizen in Singapore? I rest my case. The % will rise and it's not because of that same reason above, but of the happiness level with the whole system.
    • PingPong  •  Singapore, Singapore  •  2 months ago
If your own country does not how to appreciate your talent, it's wiser to leave for somewhere which treasures you.
When you're treated like 2nd class citizens in your own country, it's no difference being 2nd class residents in a foreign land.
