Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen has been appointed the Leader of the House by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Senior Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Heng Chee How will take over from Minister Ng as the Deputy Leader.

The Leader of the House is responsible for arranging government business and the legislative programme of Parliament.

The Leader proposes appropriate actions to be taken on procedural matters arising in Parliament and moves procedural motions in House sitings, such as to extend the sitting times.

The appointments were announced in a statement from the Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday, reported Channel NewsAsia.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong has been appointed the government Whip, where his responsibility is to ensure good communication within the party and smooth running of Parliament.

The Whips ensure there is sufficient party members in Chamber to support the party's position and that MPs vote according to the party line. He may "lift the whip" so that MPs can vote according to their conscience.

Minister Gan will be assisted by deputies Dr Amy Khor, Minister of State for Health, and Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West CDC. He takes over from Minister Lim Swee Say.
