From Jurong, to Telok Blangah to Pasir Ris, Dr Tan Cheng Bock, his family and volunteers toured the island on Saturday to thank voters for their support in the recent presidential election.

Starting at dawn, Dr Tan and his more than 20 volunteers traveled across the island on an orange open-top bus, stopping at markets and shopping malls along the way.

During the election, Dr Tan came in second with 34.9 per cent of the valid votes. President Tony Tan won with 35.2 per cent of the votes.

While motorists tooted their car horns and passers-by gave Dr Tan the thumbs-up sign, his warmest welcomes were at the markets in Ayer Rajah where he was met with loud applause and chants of his name, reported The Sunday Times.

Supporters at Teban Gardens market were waiting from as early as 7 am for his 9 am arrival.

Dr Tan, a medical doctor, was Member of Parliament for Ayer Rajah for 26 years before he retired.

One family of supporters came dressed in shades of red, Dr Tan's campaign colour. They made a sign which read: "Our No. 8 president: Our support for you is built through three generations."

Dr Tan, who has not ruled out contesting in the next presidential election, said he was "so honoured".

"I told you, I'll be back," he was quoted as saying. "There's a lot I want to do but I want to get it very structured before I get going."

Dr Tan also raised the idea of organising walks to get Singaporeans to walk and eat together.
