Dr Vivian: Let’s not talk about video anymore

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan puts the controversial video featuring SDP candidate Vincent Wijeysingha to rest. (Yahoo! photo)Dr Vivian Balakrishnan puts the controversial video featuring SDP candidate Vincent Wijeysingha to rest. (Yahoo! …Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has called for a truce.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Minister said there is "no need" to further discuss a video which shows Singapore Democratic Party's (SDP) candidate, Dr Vincent Wijeysingha, attending a forum on gay rights.

Dr Balakrishnan, who will contest the Holland-Bukit Timah group representation constituency (GRC) against the SDP team led by Dr Wijeysingha, said that he was satisfied with the SDP's video response to his earlier concerns about a possible "gay agenda" should SDP be voted into Parliament.

"His video statements (by SDP chief Chee Soon Juan) were a response to my question. He's answered the question. Let's leave it at that," said the minister.

When asked if he would bring the matter up again during his team's campaigning, he said, "No. No need. I don't need to go any further with that. Questions were asked, I posed the question, he answered," he added.

However, Dr Balakrishan dismissed claims that he was employing a "smear tactic" when he brought up the issue, saying "No. This is a legitimate question and he's answered it."

In a statement released on Monday evening, the People's Action Party (PAP) team for the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC had called on the SDP and, in particular, its candidate Dr Vincent Wijeysingha, 40, to be upfront about his "political motives", prompting a heated war of words between the two parties.

In a swift video response, SDP chief Dr Chee said that while both parties might have disagreements over policy issues, he called on the Minister not to resort to "personal attacks" and adopting "smear tactics".

Meanwhile, Dr Balakrishnan also rejected calls by the SDP for a public debate, saying that it would just give the SDP an added platform to engage residents.

Explaining that there are no such "shortcuts", he said, "Personally as incumbents, we've been here, our residents know us, we have walked and knocked on every single door in this GRC.

"A team that has just come together in the last few days and has not done their leg work, the reason they want a debate is because they want a platform to reach out to residents."

Taking a jibe at the SDP's statements that he was rattled by their contest in the GRC, Dr Balakrishnan said, "Do I look rattled?"

Apart from that, he also stressed that the choices made by voters will have an impact on the outcome and opportunities for young Singaporeans over the next 20 years, at least.

"For a young Singaporean who just graduates today, 20 years is half your working life. So there are some very fundamental choices which Singaporeans will have to make up their minds on, over the next nine to ten days," he said.

    Chee welcomes Dr Vivian’s remarks

On the other hand, Chee pointed out that there has been a “very stern rebuke online” about the way Dr Balakrishnan brought up the issue on the video.

However, the SDP chief welcomed the minister’s statements that he will not pursue the issue come campaign period. Chee was speaking at a separate press conference on Wednesday afternoon where he unveiled his party’s manifesto.

“It’s very clear the online reaction has been very negative towards him. And we asked him not to continue, not to persist in this line.

“I’m hoping, and we’re all hoping that we can run this campaign in the spirit that it was meant to be, and that is talking about issues that people are concerned about, and not get into personal attacks," said Chee.

“We take Dr Balakrishnan at his word, that he will not pursue this, and it was very distasteful. The internet community has made that clear to him, and we are glad to hear that he will not continue to pursue this matter. We’ll leave it at that."

In addition, Chee also dismissed the suggestion that the party will take advantage of the situation and turn the tables back on Dr Balakrishnan, saying that this is not what SDP is about. Instead, he called on all parties to adopt a “clean fight”.

“This is one thing SDP is not and that we want to go after somebody in a very negative way,” he said.

“We call on every party to take the high road in politics and discuss what’s important for the future of our nation and the people. And when we do that, we’re hoping they will reciprocate.”

I am a Singaporean and resident of Holland/BT. Due to my income level and my chosen place of residence, I do not benefit much from workfare, GST credit, utilities rebates, HDB upgrading. I am not unhappy with these policies because I am comforted that some of the taxes I paid is funnelled to the less priveleged. I do not have issue with the security of my neighbourhood because I trust that Singaporeans are peace loving and law abiding citizens. However I do have issue with some of the policies that our government has implemented over the years and I am listing them here:-

CPF-This is my money. I am capable of managing my money myself and do not see a need for my money to be tied up in some annuity scheme. I feel insulted that our government made a broad sweep and treat me and all its people like children who are incapable of managing our money.

HDB-This started out as an ideal platform to house our people. The intention was good when it started but it has now evolved into a tool to enslave our people. Its a good way to ensure a person toe the line especially when he is chained to a financial shackle for the next 30 years of his life.

ERP-Having a way to tame traffic congestion is good but when paying money does not solve the congestion problem, then its objective becomes a pure money spinning vehicle.

Casino-This is the lowest we as a nation stoop to make money. Our morals have gone down the drain when we put money above everything else. Citing survival is a lame excuse to mask greed.

Before I end, I want to include our national pledge below:-

      We, the citizens of Singapore,
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
      to build a democratic society
      based on justice and equality
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and
      progress for our nation.

I intend to cast my vote to a party that uphold our national pledge. That everyone is equal and happiness precedes properity and progress.

Why is Tontok making a big hoo haa over where he is staying, how much he is earning. What is the big deal saying living in Holland V/BT? We are all the same, no matter where we are staying, Tontok and the rest of Singaporeans living in "slums" are also victims of puppies sweet empty promises.
I would be very happy to donate to the underpriveleged. The rich help the poor, isn't that a good thing?
At least Tontok gets some money. Think about all the homeless people, people with no address on the NRIC. The faceless people living in tents and void-decks. I doubt they will get a single cent because they are faceless.
Vote wisely, vote for what you have been victimised for, don't vote just because you are forced to help the underpriveleged.

      Hi Vivian:

You have asked a question to SDP and SDP has answered.

In turn, are you going to answer the question SDP asked about
      YOG spending?

      Thank you.

By the way, I am a voter in BtTimah/Holland.

His MCYS still owe me an answer for more almost 2 yrs now. I view them as very irresponsible. They must be thinking I would forget & forgive as time passes. It goes to show what type of boss breed what type of staff.

Given a choice, I would rather have a gay as minister than one who cannot even handle a project and overblew the budget using taxpayers' money!

      Dr Vivian

Please ask any CEO and CFO , if you overshot your budget . How will they grade u ?

The answer from them will be : The door is always open , please leave !
      • Observer Tan 1 year 1 month ago
If one "overshoots" budgets, usually they get promoted.

In companies, budgets are usually premised on revenue targets. Only in govt, budgets are premised on cost. So please don't pretend you are working.
      • Joe 1 year 1 month ago
end of the day it's also about the returns...any companies willing to spent much if the returns is high...how much do they profit from YOG? did they make a loss or profits? tell me in "dollar and cent" and not in tangible item...
      • FTM 1 year 1 month ago
aiya..its always alright for them to make grave mistakes, like HDB cost issue, Mas Selamat escape or YOG overblown budget, and yet get paid with extreme high pay and bonus, with job still in-tact. But its wrong if you eat sweet in MRT, you wil get fine. What a disparity.

YOUR WORDS WILL COME BACK AND HAUNT YOU
Dr Vivian unveiled a mega $10-million Community Integration Fund last year to make the immigrants feel welcomed, accepted and happy in Singapore and yet when he was asked by a fellow PAP MP Dr Lily Neo to increase the monthly allowance for destitute Singaporeans on Public Assistance Scheme in 2007, he retorted:
“How much do you want? Do you want three meals in a hawker centre, food court or restaurant?”
Such callous comments coming from a multi-millionaire minister being paid for by Singapore
taxpayers is not only small-minded, but very unfair and selfish as well.

It shows arrogant in the statement because he's not a destitude and so is his parent. He's in a bubble that and thought it will not burst. He's making one too much mistake by his statement that's comes from the heart but not from an intelligent mind.(Brain) I expect him to be more humble because Singaporen expect him to serve us when elected not to be arrogant. All his studies and papers that he has had should be used as toilet paper. He should know when to say and what to say. LET TALK ABOUT OVERSPENT YOG BUDGET WHICH CAN SERVED 3 MEALS IN RESTAURANT FOR SINGAPOREAN DESTITUDES.

I don't think I can forgive or vote for an MP who says something like that when more public assistance to the needy was called for. Seems like no heart at all for the people. Very very sad, for the needy I mean.

Being a middle incomer, my family and I receive lesser financial help from goverment as they care very much for the lower income. We are stuck in the middle earning just enough for our family, to support our parents, children 's education and high housing monthly instalment. A change of govering might change the situation.
    • Toto  •  1 year 1 month ago
Dei Bala . . . . you overblown YOG budget by $300, we can close both eyes, $3000 we close one eye but you have overblown 300 MILLION dollars . . . be accountable for this.
How many voiceless people could be helped with this huge amount of money? And yet you denied a $30 increase in social assistance proposed by Dr Lily Neo years ago! Most Singaporeans will not take this lying down.
      • AiYaYa 1 year 1 month ago
Oh that not his money. That is the state money. Very disappointed with this VB.
      • Peter 1 year 1 month ago
It is a well-known fact that GIC and Temasek Holdings, Singapore’s two sovereign wealth funds, are both headed by members of the Lee family. Both have reported a ridiculous loss of $41.6 Billion and$39.91 Billion respective and have yet to answer to the real stakeholders – Singaporeans – on how this could have happened. No one has taken responsibility or issued explanations or anythingat all. In fact, the state media has been glaringly silent on the issue. Why aren’t we Singaporeans hearing anything about ourmoney?
“When we invest, we invest for the long-term”, Lee Kuan Yew, who heads GIC, said when Temasek Holdings purchased Bank of America shares and then sold it off a few months later, losingbetween US$2.3 to US$4.6 billion just like that.
That is more than $80 Billion in total from the blood and sweat of Singaporeans, down the drain because of bad decisions made by individuals whose multi-million dollar paycheques remain secure no matter how many mistakes they make. In contrast, the Resilience Package tapped into Singapore’s official reserves to withdraw $4.9 billion, and that effort to help Singaporeans in genuine need required hours and hours of debate.
While we should rightfully acknowledge the good that the PAP has done for Singapore, it is often taken for granted that Singaporeans believe a blatant lie that the country’s affluence is owed to the PAP and Lee Kuan Yew’s efforts. No, it came from the efforts of allSingaporeans. Hong Kong did not have a strongman like Lee Kuan Yew to dictate their lives from toilet habits to whether they could hear their own dialect on TV, and yet they have achieved double of what we have – and their people are involved in the political process, not dead and apathetic like our population. There is absolutely no reason to believe that Singapore, with its strategic location and hardworking population, would not have reached its present affluence under a less money-minded David Marshall or someone else.
Moreover, the oft-used justification for the lofty salaries of the government is that the private sector pays its leaders similar salaries. Well, in the private sector, there is such a thing asaccountability. Where is Temasek Holdings’ accountability? Where is GIC’s accountability? Where was Wong Kan Seng’s accountability when his Ministry slipped up time and time again? Where is Yaacob Ibrahim’s accountability? What exactly happens when a minister makes a mistake in Singapore? Where is the Fourth Estate to play its role as a watchdog?

Time and again, we Singaporeans talked only but again and agian are being fooled by PROMISES OF A BETTER FUTURE,,,,,, HOW DO WE MEASURE "BETTER" - HIGH INFLATION, CONGESTION ON THE ROADS (BECAUSE OF BAD PLANNING) etc. IT THAT BETTER NOW THAN THE GOOD OLD DAYS?
    • Seb  •  1 year 1 month ago
People of Holland-Bukit Timah GRC...please put an end to this guy at the ballot box. He used to be someone people look up to but he has sunk into the mud just like the other ministers...A man cannot serve both Man and Money ...he will love one and hate the other (modified from the Good Book)
    • Fair Comments  •  1 year 1 month ago
If the opposition succeeds in forming a government in near future, I want the new government to conduct a thorough & meticulous audit of all government spendings, all past & current ministers' financial assets (LKY especially), failed investments by Temasek Holdings, GIC, PAP town councils (who invested in minibonds), CPF money & actual cost of HDB flats. Very important is the exact amount in our locked reserves, or will it be S$0 when then next government takes over. This is pertinent to all Singaporeans!!!

      Vivian B replied n i quote...

"No. No need. I don't need to go any further with that. Questions were asked, I posed the question, he answered," he added.

What about all those questions posed to the PAP MPs? have they replied and gave a satisfactory answer? you guess...

I hate PAP's gutter politics.... sick to the stomache...

first you smeared. when that didn't work you called for a truce. you refuse to engage in a healthy debate. wouldn't this be the best platform to expose your opponents flaws and incompetence?
this proves that dr vivian lacks the depth and courage of a leader. if knocking on every door is his strongest point then he should be a karung guni man instead of an mp.

Singaporeans give him a blank cheque to spend on the YOG ..what to do ?..It already history..

Deduct his pay lor for his rest of his life .....He is answerable and accountable for his actions.

Like WKS ..he said that he took responsiblity of Mas's escape..talk only no action..

What has he done to himself ? Just a few words of apologies .... very cheap and simply hor ...

We also want to be minister...can anyhow spend money and if they made mistakes ...just apologise lor..so simple as that....Even ah beng, ah seng, ah lian, ah soh and ah pek also can be minister .

Vivian knew he used smear tactics to distract the voters against SDP.
Then now he just wants to brush it aside.
Just remember he totally screwed up the budget for YOG and that's the tax payers' money he lost.

I never believed in him as a MP much less a cabinet Minister.
I would not vote for him even if I have void my vote.

You are an EMBARRASSMENT to Singapore.
      1. Your budget for the Youth Olympic Games was 104 million. Instead, you OVERSPENT by so BLOODY MUCH. That money could have been used to improve our society, help the poor or do a multitude of other good things. Where the hell did that money go?
2.The opposition answers all the questions to the best of their ability that the PAP bombard them with, but you can't even OWN UP.
3.The only reason that you do not want a public debate is that you are AFRAID of the outcome.
4.No. You do not look rattled, Vivian. You look absolutely terrified, like someone just put the fear of god into you. You look scared WITLESS, man! Oh... wait... no wits to begin with...sorry.
I feel sorry for all the people that had to listen to your lies and crap.

      HI ALL!
GAMBLING!!! CASINOS, 4D, TOTO, HORSE RACING, SOCCER BETS...!!!

Ok, since it has been said that the Casinos will create jobs it is acceptable and some government offcials gave the green light inspite of the expected social problems. What about TOTO AND 4DS? It used to be there were 4Ds lotteries only on Sat & Sun but then the government increased one more day which is Wed. TOTO - It used to be once a week on Mondays then the government has to increase it to twice a week, adding Thursday in. Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... SINGAPORE IS SO SMALL BUT EVERY FEW STEPS WE HAVE BETTING OUTLETS RUN BY THE S'PORE POOLS. You see aunties, uncles, working adults all queue and queue and queue and S'pore Pools racking in so much money from them. Does all this make sense? Singaporeans have been turned into hardcore gamblers by the government!!! Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... No end in sight ... I WISH THE GOVERNMENT CAN REDUCE THE NUMBER OF WEEKLY LOTTERIES AS I HAVE KNOWN MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE ADDICTED TO TEH NATIONAL LOTTERY SYSTEM AND ALL THE PROBLEMS THAT FOLLOW...... Do fellow Sigaporeans agree with me on this? Sighhhhhhhhh........
