Police arrested a man suspected of killing his neighbour at Toa Payoh on Saturday night.

The 49-year-old suspect was believed to have been inebriated when he got involved in a scuffle with the victim, Mr Mohan, 51, earlier that evening at the latter's rental flat, two doors away from his.

The suspect dragged the victim to a staircase landing about 15m away while Mr Mohan was inside the flat with his brother and friends.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, Mr Mohan's brother said that the suspect had rushed into the flat, shouting as he punched and kicked the victim.

Unable to restrain the suspect, Mr Mohan's brother and friends rushed down for help.

Neighbours did not help the victim out because they were afraid of the 'big-sized' suspect, who was known for his violent temper.

'We were very afraid, so we kept indoors and someone called the police,' Madam Siti Romiah Ramlan, 56, who lived six doors away from the suspect, told The Straits Times.

By the time police arrived, Mr Mohan was covered in white paint and unconscious, the brother told Lianhe Wanbao.

The victim eventually died at Tan Tock Seng Hospital at 10.30pm, after suffering from severe cuts and bruises on his face during the fight.

It is understood that there were no weapons involved.

This was not the first time that a fight had broken out between the two neighbours. According to The Straits Times, neighbours said they borrowed money from neighbours and constantly fought with each other after drinking until police had to intervene several times.
