GE was a ‘win-win-win result’: Dr Tony Tan

Presidential hopeful Dr Tony Tan stressed that Singapore politics is shaping up to have an effective opposition in Parliament to match the strong party in government, which will be a "new norm".

The former Deputy Prime Minister believes that having one overwhelming party with little effective opposition is now a thing of the past for Singapore.

Dr Tan said this in reply to a question posed to him -- at an event organised by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry -- about his views regarding the General Election held in May.

Dr Tan termed the conclusion of the election, which saw six seats going to the opposition, as a "win-win-win result".

The first "win" was referred to the People's Action Party winning 81 out of 87 seats in Parliament, an indication that it maintains a strong mandate from Singaporeans to shape and implement policies.

The second "win" was for the opposition, and in particular the Workers' Party, for winning a Group Representation Constituency (GRC), necessary for establishing a base of influence.

The final "win" was for Singaporeans, as Dr Tan felt that the election was an indication of another stage of political development in Singapore.

He added that a strong opposition in Parliament is essential in formulating better policies as different views and perspectives will be put forth through debate.

Watch a segment of Dr Tony Tan's Q&A session at the dialogue on Friday.

Dear President, indeed it's a win win situation. How do you intend to redress the anomaly of PA using public funds yet blatantly supporting PAP exclusively? I personally see it as criminal and not just immoral.

"Though Ms Tin is still currently under police investigations for allegedly flouting election laws on ‘Cooling-off’ day, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong appointed her to sit on the powerful Home Affairs and Law Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) which oversees the police, thereby making a mockery of Singapore’s legal system."

PAP this is what you continue to do to anger Singaporeans. You don't seem to learn from the GE 2011 results. The 60 % voted for you will continue to dwindle until you get 10% in next GE.

Who is responsible for this policy that cause so much job and social problems. Below is my true encounter, is really a big shock to me as a Singaporean Manager:
I have a Burmese engineer under my supervision. During the recent performance evaluation I happen to look at her HR file and realized that she had her first degree from Yangon University, and a Master in Engineering from NTU, I also surprise to see her undergraduate result from Yangon University was average, scored mostly "B" and "C" grades, so I assumed she is in her own scholarship (parent sponsor) to NTU, so casually I said to her, your parent must be rich in Burma in order to sponsor her, but she reply and said "No" Your govt lend me the monies and upon graduation we only need to pay back 80%, so that mean 20% is paid by our Tax money. And even better deal for them is that they need to stay back for at least three years to work in Singapore. So for Singaporean, our parent will need to spend our own money to send our kid oversea. What a deal!!
So with the above, what all of you think of our govt policies.....? We, Singaporean are being screwed very badly. The FT used our money, upon graduation they take our job and opportunity.... so what is left for us. The greedy ones will also use this opportunity, as a jump board to go to another country after getting a subsidize degree and good experience in Singapore. Many become our Singaporean boss in Singapore or if Singaporean is unlucky may work under them in other country.
      I rest my case.

      • Yogi Kudu 10 months ago
I believe it is a show that someone "independant" is actually holding the key. Otherwise there will be too many questions about what if there is abuse of power. BUT we all know that a PAP backed candidate brings it back to abuse of power. But the world does not know that !! SO they look incredibly shiny and good. Plenty of check and balance. A PAP backed man will never question what they do with the reserves, well almost never.(OTC did and rattled them properly) But we know how that story ended. There are plenty of things the PAP would not like to surface and having a president in their pockets help. We are crazy not to guard that it does not happen.

I am not Singaporean, but I think it is disgraceful the way PAP members use defamation laws to silence criticism, and run the country like a Police State. On my visits there I have been appalled by people begging on the streets, and the huge salaries paid to government Ministers. And the newspapers are the most sycophantic organs of public comment I have ever come across. They are always promoting the Government line, and seem to be too afraid to criticise or even to offer positive criticism. I am glad that the opposition has made some advances, and I look forward to the day when the PAP will lose and a new Party will govern for all the people, and not just the rich

Dr Tony Tan was no independent-minded person on the graduate mothers scheme
When Tony Tan’s name was first floated as possible presidential candidate, the Straits Times was quick to highlight his supposed independent streak from the PAP government. In particular, Dr Tony Tan was said to have stood up to Cabinet by opposing the graduate mothers scheme, which prioritise school admission for children of graduate mothers. How accurate is this statement? Did Dr Tony Tan really question and oppose the scheme, or was he forced to do so by electoral circumstances and outcome?
To answer this question, it is helpful to review the older news archives. The records appear to suggest instead that the PAP was forced to abandon the graduate mothers scheme after suffering an unprecedented 12.8% swing (compared to the previous election) against themselves which also saw opposition candidate Chiam See Tong defeating future MND Minister Mah Bow Tan in Potong Pasir.
In order to understand what really happened, some background explanation is necessary.
In his 1983 National Day Speech, PM Lee Kuan Yew highlighted a trend which he found greatly disturbing. Educated women, he said, were having fewer children compared to less educated ones. As a consequence, this resulted in a lop-sided procreation pattern which LKY feared would undermine the collective intelligence of Singapore citizens in the long run. If one believes, as Lee Kuan Yew clearly does, that intelligence is a heritable genetic trait, over time less intelligent offspring would come to outnumber intelligent ones and this spells great trouble for Singapore’s future. Some corrective eugenics measure, Lee believed was necessary to correct this trend.
And so the graduate mother scheme was born. The scheme gave priority admission to school for children whose mothers who were also degree holders. Such an incentive, Lee hoped, would induce graduate mothers to bear more children which may reverse this trend. The public it turned out, was far less supportive of the scheme than it was hoped.
Dr Tony Tan’s initial defense of the graduate mother scheme
Now where does Dr Tony Tan feature in all these? Prior to the 1984 election, Dr Tony Tan was quoted as saying that the scheme was “worth a try” and that he recognised that the lopsided pro-creation pattern was indeed a problem.
Indeed, where was the dissent Dr Tony Tan is supposedly famous for? In the above quote, Dr Tan makes it clear that he considered the trend to be disturbing and that it was worth trying to remedy it. In today’s world, it’s strictly speaking none of the country’s political leaders’ business that such a pattern exists. Children should be judged not on their parents merits, but solely on their own performance. However, it’s not apparent from pre-election news reports that Tony Tan opposed it publicly right from the start.
When the NUS student union protested the graduate mothers scheme in 1984, Dr Tony Tan was quick to rebuke them by saying students should prioritise their studies ahead of political activism:
“Young people are, naturally, idealistic and feel strongly about social issues, but it would be foolish of you to fritter away the next three to four years in pursuit of peripheral and frivolous activities,” he told the students.
Though he denied that his remarks had anything to do with their position, even the government-controlled Straits Times was not fooled when it cited Dr Tony Tan’s comments as a response to the actions of the university students.
Update: The only dissent Dr Tony Tan appeared to have expressed on the graduate mothers scheme appeared to be this from 2nd April 1984. It is apparent that Dr Tony Tan merely doubted that the scheme would work, rather than whether it was unfair. Dr Tony Tan responded to a resident who had questioned if the government’s elitist mentality was acceptable:"

Pro-Singaporean leader Tan Jee Say wants to be a President for Singaporeans to check on the PAP regime, he said in a press statement released after he collected the eligibility forms from the Election Department.

“I am stepping forward because many Singaporeans want a non-PAP President whose independence of the PAP is clear, obvious and cannot be in doubt. Only such a person can have the moral authority to fulfill the mission of Elected President which is to provide checks and balances on the PAP Government,” he wrote on his blog echoing the sentiments of many Singaporeans.

Taking a snipe at the incumbent for being ‘quiet’ and ‘inactive’, Mr Tan added that he want to be an active President to engage the nation on issues of conscience and promoting worthy causes.

“The PAP Government has lost its moral compass. A President directly elected by the people will have the moral authority to remind them of their lapses. He shall be the conscience of the nation. Only a person with moral courage and conviction can step up to this role,” he added.

The PAP has so far endorsed former Deputy Prime Minister and SPH Chairman Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam as its preferred presidential candidate with ringing endorsements from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, ESM Goh Chok Tong, Law Minister Shanmugam and other heavy-weight ministers. Two other possible candidates are former PAP MP Dr Tan Cheng Bock and former NTUC INCOME Chief Tan Kin Lian.

A former principal private secretary of ESM Goh Chok Tong, Mr Tan graduated from the prestigious Oxford University with a degree in Politics, Economics and Philosophy.

He contested in the recent election in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC where his team garnered a respectable 40 percent of the valid votes.

Mr Tan is that of chief executive officer with the title of regional managing director of John Govett (Asia) Private Limited and its successor company AIB Govett (Asia) Private Limited from 1 February 1997 to 6 March 2001, a period of 4 years 1 month, managing assets of more than S$100 million dollars.

With Mr Tan entering the fray, this year’s Presidential contest will prove to be an interesting one if he is able to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility to contest.

      Dr. TT

you have been a PAP veteran -- of course you will interpret it in a way that puts you in the middle ground

but the fact remains that PAP is absolutely fortunate to have garnered 60% of the votes in GE2011

with them dragging their feet now on policies that are detrimentals to many Singaporeans who have suffered job losses - wages and salaries cuts and depressed, CPF cuts and slashed , the aged and PMETs losing out to FTs and more Singaporeans cannot afford to have a decent living in Singapore --

your interpretation is certainly off track

the swing will be greater because Singaporeans young can see how their parents have been slowly but surely marginalized with policies that are pro-FTs

as you aged -- only and only the Ministers salaries are going up and up and paid big fat bonuses with excellent pension packages

but the common Singaporeans gets their CPF slashed further with age and worst driven out of jobs by design as one can say that there are many ways to skin a cat

now aged Singaporeans above 40s and 50s saddled with mortgage repayments but with nothing in CPF to pay for their housing and with jobs losses --- their live is becoming worst off while the FTs have it great enjoying the Swiss Standard of Living along with our Millions Dollars Salaried Ministers not to mention the President as well who have been the quiet one.

there will be greater swing should there be no progress in re-inventing and helping these aged displaced Singaporeans who are falling through the cracks --- while all this is happening -- the young bear witness and will not be silent about it because it is their future too at stake with the current incumbent party policies

not only our Children future at stake --- it will be our grand children future at stake too because of the policies of PAP and their pro-FTs stance as well as educating the foreigners child with our taxpayers monies

definitely your interpretation of a win-win-win results is one that is politically shrewd
    • Native Singaporean  •  10 months ago
GE is not a win-win-win result. It is the hardwork and people-orientated of an Opposition Party to win hearts of every Singaporean. For the ruling party, it is the elitism and arrogant attitude of PAP, because of LKY's shadow, that our average Singaporans detest the most. LKY had made Singapore of what is today because of his strong iron fist of governing with fear. The World has changed and the current PAP is still doctrined with LKY's mentality. That is already past and not applicable in today world of advanced technologies and highly educated population who is exposed to world happening at large..

safer to vote for tan jee say or tan kin lian. Dr tony tan have got PAP blood in him. too long & deep in pap. I dont think Dr tony tan will speak up against the govt policies
    • WP 4ever  •  10 months ago
if tony t says it a win-win-win situation then my views is just the opposite & i says it a lose-lose-lose situation in spore politics !
lose 1- the pap 60.1% does not reflect very strong mandate from the voters...it win by majority becoz of the gerrymandering of the constitution & unfair grcs system.

lose 2- after the wayang staged by pap during election..the implemention of the policies is even worse than before and the citizens will suffer further under pap rulke

lose 3- the six seats won by workers' party cannot block further fluck up policies by pap and pap will bulldozed its fluck up policies regardless and caused further damage to our society

it is all thanks to those flucking 60.1% daft citizens who wanted to be screw for another 5 long years by pap.

      What win? Where's the win?
We all know the True-Blue-Blood Singaporeans have lost.

I want to see a contest in the Presidential Elections.
IF the Elections Board is fair, there should be at least three eligible men for the "job", not just Tony Tan from the PAP. He claims he isn't. Nobody is taking his words too seriously.

I hope all Singaporeans who have the rights to vote in the upcoming Elections will not be fooled by this wolf in sheep's clothing (WHITE!!)

A REAL VICTORY for us is when Singapore dumps the useless President ALTOGETHER and get our acts together to bring an end to PAP/ MIW tyrannical rule and authoritarianism after 46 years.

Well, with the upcoming LKY "Immortalising" Movie in the making, the end is near. VERY near.
