UPDATED (1 March, 8:30pm to include statement from CAG)

A new and improved terminal, to be known as Terminal 4, will soon replace Changi Airport's Budget Terminal, which will be demolished on 25 September this year.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Changi Airport Group (CAG) announced that it is constructing a larger passenger building to cater to the continued growth of air traffic at Changi Airport and further strengthen Singapore's air hub status.

Airlines currently operating in the Budget Terminal will move their operations to Terminal 2 from 6am on 25 September.

The affected airlines are Berjaya Air, Cebu Pacific, Firefly, South East Asian Airlines and Tiger Airways.

Unlike the present Budget Terminal which can only handle up to 7 million passengers, the new terminal will have a capacity of 16 million passengers per annum.

Terminal 4 will also be designed to enable efficient passenger processing and quick turnaround of aircraft, and will not have aerobridges.

In addition, it will have a wider choice of retail and food & beverage offerings as well as passenger amenities that will better serve the needs of travelers, CAG said.

Construction of Terminal 4 will begin in 2013 and the new terminal is expected to be ready by 2017.

Further details of the new terminal, as well as each airline's operations at Terminal 2, will be released at a later date.
