Lim Boon Heng to retire from politics

Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Boon Heng has announced his retirement from politics.

Mr Lim, who is also Chairman of the People's Action Party and Member of Parliament (MP) for Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC), made the announcement at a constituency event on Sunday.

He also revealed that the Jurong GRC team will be led by Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who is currently an MP for the area, at the upcoming General Election.

Mr Lim entered politics in 1980 and was elected MP for Kebun Baru till 1991. He then became MP for Ulu Pandan (1991—1997) and Bukit Timah GRC (1997—2006) before leading the Jurong GRC in the last GE. He has been a Minister in the Prime Minister's Office since 1993.

His distinguished career with the trade union in Singapore also saw him spend 26 years with the National Trades Union Congress - the last 13 as its secretary-general - before stepping down in 2006 December to make way for his successor, Mr Lim Swee Say.
