A re-look at what the candidates have to say

Who will be Singapore's seventh President? (Yahoo! file photo)Who will be Singapore's seventh President? (Yahoo! file photo)

As nine days of intense campaigning draw to a close, the four Presidential candidates have debated over the role of the Presidency, raised suggestions on the changes they would like to see and shared their thoughts on hot-button issues.

The four candidates, in alphabetical order, are: former Member of Parliament for Ayer Rajah Tan Cheng Bock, 71; investment advisor Tan Jee Say, 57; former deputy prime minister Tony Tan Keng Yam, 71; and former NTUC Income chief Tan Kin Lian, 63.

Since July, Yahoo! Singapore has met with three of the four candidates for a one-on-one session where they each explain their reasons for joining the presidential race and what they stand for.

We also approached Dr Tony Tan's campaign team to seek an interview but were unable to secure a one-on-one session.

With Polling Day just a day away, the time has come for Singaporeans to play their part in the nation's most hotly-contest presidential election and decide who will be Singapore's seventh President.

Here's a re-look at what the three candidates have to say:

Last night Tan Jee Say proposed that GIC and Temasek Holdings should invest in our own local enterprises instead of overseas markets. That means trying to make money from our right pocket to put it into our left pocket. How stupid!

Investing in overseas markets means trying to make money from outside or others to bring it back to our own pockets. This's 'investment'.

Yet an experienced and highly qualified 'investment adviser' like Tan Jee Say could make such stupid proposal. It's unbelievable, and what he has claimed so far is believable?

"Dr Tony Tan is chairman of the National Research Foundation, which is a department of the Prime Minister's Office" .............

How can he run for the PE ? Is this a conflict of interest ? On one side, he works for PAP
reporting to LHL, & on the other, a president by the people for the people, "IF elected ?
How can this be ??????? ... MUST be investigated !!!!!!!!!!!!!! .. MUST be disqualified !!!!!!!

More background checks needed !!!!!!!!! Its an unfair representation of the Citizens.

Those who said we are living in a good & secure nation etc etc, please remember,
its NOT build by one party or for that matter, ONE "IMMORTALISED" person.
Its jointly build by our forefathers, brick by brick with their bare hands for our benefits
but .... alas, they just gotta be left to DIE in foreign land.
Now, have we savour the benefits yet ???? Dont lie to yourselves. The HDB you're
staying, utilities bills you're paying etc etc ..... we ai'nt seen nothing yet !!!!!
Instead, we gotta work double hard to ensure our kids seen theirs, while all this
while, "people" who rule us may have being enriching themselves & amassing their
      wealth & assets everywhere.
Giving us $10 and takes back 10 folds in no time & we are made to beg for our own
CPF money, to be appreciative to them for thier "charities", "welfares" etc etc.
What the HELL is this ... for a better life ???? WHEN ?????? THINK ???????

Think again .......... for our forefather ?? ... GONE
      For us ??? NO hope
For our kids, the next gen ?? UP TO YOU

A TWO way politics is inevitable if we want democracy. Tony Tan has given sign of complacency by not attending a one on one interview. I think he has given up on us and still saddened by all those allegations. Lets allow him a break and consider retiring for good. I wish him well.

if you watch TT on the online face to face (first part) you can feel that he should be named 'thorny' tan from some of his expressions when debating to his opponents. He don't seem respect some of the candidates. His remarks seems sarcastic. He sound arrogant. He don't seem like that kind of people president. he seems feel that the face to face sessions is waiting his time. If can he won't want to attend again.

It was touched on the issue that employees from GIC/govt sectors will lost their jobs if they do not vote for TT. It is shameful to use this threat if it's true. Are these voters' given special polling card to identify they are from GIC/govt sectors? I think it is important to have a people-oriented and visionary leader instead of someone who had proven failure in investments especially where such investment funds were derived from the citizens hard earned monies.

No such checks.... do not get into fear mode, that was in the 1970 -1980.
You need to be independent in your mind, whether you work in the PM office or at the GIC. You are free to make your choice on the person you wanted elected.
    • Basil  •  9 months ago
      TT is a NO NO
    • Chilli Padi  •  9 months ago
Why TT dare not to comment other than the 3 PE hopeful? Afraid one might dwell into the sons' NS issues?
    • showly  •  9 months ago
so far: TKL,TJS both say that they will give some of salary back to society if elected. whereas TT and TCB had no reply.
      • PETER 9 months ago
Hi Winn, TCB did not say anything, but from wat i gather, TCB is a doctor in J.West, that allows patient to owe him $$.

This information was more than 15 yrs....

Think of how the returns will be after all this years....

My vote goes to Mr. Tan Jee Say for his sharp intelligence, sincerity, empathy with us commoners, and the plain balls to take on this arrogant government, so exemplified by tt's body language and half-past six answers at the f2f2 debate. And to anyone from channel news asia, please, could your cameras just do a close up of the faces of lhl, lky and gct when Mr. Tan is declared the Elected President of Singapore.

TCB only refutes & rebutts TKL & TJS.
TCB dare not to go against TT aka PAP.
      • showly 9 months ago
coming from same ex-PAP for TCB and TT
      • Joel Poh 9 months ago
he has gone against TT saying that there is an independence issue with him, with TT coming from GIC. it's not true that TCB dare not go against TT or PAP. he has done it as MP in parliament, when he voted against NMP and foreign talent. Thus, even make lao lee say "who u think can give singapore a better future, me or TCB?"
