NSF in photo has been counselled: Mindef

A photo of a national serviceman making his maid carry his backpack is making the rounds online. (Photo from Facebook)A photo of a national serviceman making his maid carry his backpack is making the rounds online. (Photo from F …UPDATE

The full-time national serviceman (NSF) who was photographed with his maid carrying his backpack identified himself to his commander and has been counselled, said Singapore's Ministry of Defence on Monday.

A series of photographs of the NSF recently made its rounds on the Internet and generated much debate about whether Gen Y soldiers in Singapore were too "soft" and "spoilt".

The Straits Times' online portal Stomp said that Colonel Desmond Tan, Director of Mindef Public Affairs, said:

"The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has completed its investigation into the recent case of a serviceman who was photographed with his domestic helper carrying his field pack ("Deafening silence in army backpack saga'' by Mr Patrick Tan; Saturday).

"The serviceman concerned has identified himself to his Commander.

"He was a recruit undergoing the Physical Training Preparatory phase prior to the Basic Military Training phase.

"The recruit is remorseful for his actions and realises that it was wrong for him to have allowed this.

"He has been counselled and continues his training. The SAF has reminded all servicemen to be mindful of their conduct in public."

When news of the photograph broke on 28 March, the NSF's parents were livid, my paper reported. The NSF, who has at least one older sibling, did not know what to do and was afraid of the consequences if he was identified.

Tan said that the Singapore Armed Forces has issued a reminder to all servicemen to be mindful of their conduct in public.

The photos of the NSman, which had been taken off Facebook and posted on Stomp, featured a young man, fully decked out in army fatigues, with his maid trailing behind him carrying his large backpack.

The full pack the maid was carrying looks to be the newer type, which is bigger and has more compartments compared to older variations.

The contributor claimed that the photos had been taken in the area around Tanah Merah MRT.

Disgusted netizens began sharing the photos on social networking site Facebook and on online forums like hardwarezone.com.sg, triggering debate on whether the youth these days are too pampered.

Most were critical of the soldier, calling him "lazy" and "spoilt". Some even said he "tarnished the image of Singapore".

Others we more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, saying he could have been injured and needed help with his heavy backpack.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman earlier said, "The SAF takes a serious view of the conduct of its servicemen in public."

She added that the SAF is looking into the matter and will take appropriate action.

Ex-NS men and NSFs who spoke to Yahoo! Singapore held differing views on the matter.

25-year-old Kelvin Wong, who completed his army stint in 2006, said, "This photo is just ridiculous. It's hard to believe that a grown man who is supposed to be serving the nation is making his female domestic help carry his backpack."

"He's a disgrace to the army and makes Singaporean men look bad," he added.

23-year-old Karl Mak, who finished his stint in 2008, said, "He's probably a spoilt kid who had his bag carried by his maid since he was a child. I guess stuff like that is cultivated from a young age."

A former army officer who only wanted to be known as Jonathan, was more amused than disgusted.

The 28-year-old said, "When I first saw the photo, I thought it was  funny. I've never come across such a scenario before and I don't think it's at all representative of our generation. In the army, we trained recruits to take responsibility for themselves."

"Anyway, it's possible he had a shoulder injury and needed help with his bag. It's not a big deal and we shouldn't generalise this to the mentality of youths these days."

if war ever breaks out in Singapore, the situation will be something like this....

      At home one day...

MAID: Sir! Sir! There's war! Hurry up, you have to go to camp.

(Our Singapore soldier is lying on his bed, playing his PSP. His eyes are glued to the PSP screen...)

SOLDIER: Don't want lah! I tired!

MAID: But sir! If you don't go, you will have to go to jail! You must go!!

      (Our Singapore soldier is irritated)

SOLDIER: Aiyah! Ok lah! Ok lah! Go pack my bag for me.

(Maid packs his bag, polishes his boots, irons his uniform)

MAID: Sir, I have packed bag, boot polish already, uniform I iron finish.

(Singaporean soldier spreads out his arms. Maid helps him put on the uniform and buttons it.)

MAID: Sir, can you please stand up for a while? I need to help you put on the pants.

SOLDIER: Wah lau eh!! (Puts aside his PSP for a few seconds.)

(Soldier stands up, while playing his PSP. He lifts up one of his legs, maid inserts one side of the trousers. He stumbles a little, but he grabs maid's shoulders. Lifts up another leg. Maid inserts both legs in both sides of trousers. She slides the pants up and buttons up)

      MAID: Sir, your boots....

SOLDIER (irritated): I don't want to wear boots lah! Very hot leh! I wear slipper go can one lah!...

      Scene 2 in the jungle:

Singapore soldier and his maid are in the jungle. Maid is holding on to the SAR 21 rifle in one hand and in the other hand, an umbrella over our Singapore soldier. On her shoulders is the Singapore soldier's backpack. She is looking around cautiously for enemy soldiers. Singapore soldier is busy playing PSP.

SOLDIER: Wah....^*&$#^....alot of mosquito leh...very thirsty....
      (turns to maid)

      SOLDIER: I want water.

MAID (while taking out water bottle for backpack, opens it, inserts a straw in it and brings it closer to soldier's mouth): Sir, water....

(Singapore soldier still playing PSP. He drinks water from straw. Suddenly, enemy gunfire heard).

MAID: Sir, hide sir!! Enemy coming!!

SOLDIER: Take out grenade throw lah!

      MAID: Okay sir

(Maid takes out grenade and throws. But there's still gunfire)

MAID: Ahh sir...I throw grenade already... still got enemy shooting....

(Irritated soldier eyes' still glued to PSP)

MAID: Sir, u listen or not???

(Soldier still playing PSP, can't be bothered)

SOLDIER: Then shoot lah. Ask me for what?

(Maid nervously points gun, sweat from her forehead)

MAID: Sir, I neva use gun before...I scared sir

(Soldier busy with PSP. Doesn't reply)

MAID: Sir, I very scared sir

(Soldier still busy with PSP. Doesn't reply)

      MAID (while screaming): SIR!!!

(Fed up, maid shoots soldier with rifle. She then stands over soldier's corpse and smiles. She takes out a walkie talkie and radios...)

MAID: I have shot a Singapore soldier. He's dead. Glory to (whichever country maid is from)
(she gives a sly wicked smile. She looks at the corpse)

MAID: Sorry sir, I have been carrying your army backpack for a very long time. I got all the military training I needed just by carrying your backpack. Then I was offered a job as a spy. Thank you sir, you made my life.

(Glory to the Republic of I*******A or P*******S (depends on which country the maid is from). Singapore has surrendered unconditionally.)

He is a disgrace to all of NSFs (present & Ex)
Our SAF image that had strengthened thru out the years is tarnished by his single stupid act!
A devastating signal had shown that can our soldiers defence our country in real time ops?!!
All the efforts that we had contributed was washed down to the drain especially to those who had sacrificed during training. Our neighbours will be laughing at us: S'PORE SOLDIERS IS A JOKE! THEY ONLY KNOW HOW TO PRESS BUTTONS IN AN AIRCON ROOM! (mournful)
It's gonna take years & resources to re-establish our reputation.
      • Sesukaku Hehe 1 year 1 month ago
well.. is it his act or the one who take the picture?

Whatever it is, its a lesson learnt, no doubt about that. So lets move on and make this event as a turning pt. to SAF and its personnel.

Boyfriends or husbands, who are not even paid, carry expensive handbags for the ladies, they don't complain. And I saw many ladies here saying that this chap is a disgrace to Singapore.
How ironic? Did you ladies call your boyfriends/husbands a disgrace to society?
      • Allelujah! 1 year 1 month ago
        Out of context.
      • Andy 1 year 1 month ago
Maybe I should say the ladies a disgrace to society who didn't pay their other half and yet made them carry their stuff. Still out of context???
      • Hairul 1 year 1 month ago
Gfs or wife carry for husband or vice versa its ok. But a maid carry the backpack for the one who supposed to protect us , is a disgrace.

How can he protect us when he do not even able to take care of himself??

He apologised?? But why he apologised?? He apologised cos someone caught him redhanded with pics. Thats why he own up and apologised...

NS nowwaydays and during our time very different. MY TIME WE USE 3-TONNERS THEN TO MOVE AROUND. GEN Y USE AIR CON BUSES. WE ATE SHITTY FOOD COOKED BY NS COOKS. GEN Y EATS FOOD CATERED BY AIRPORT INFIGHT KITCHEN CATERER CIAS. WE WORE CHEAP AND LOUSY FLAT BLACK PT SHOES. GEN Y NOW USE ERGOMICALLY DESIGNED NEW BALANCE SPORTS SHOES. WE CARRY HEAVY ALI BABA BAGS AND DRAG IN AROUND ON OUR SHOULDERS. GEN Y CARRY BACK PACKS WITH WHEELS TO PULL IT AROUND. WE HAD OUR ENCIKS AND OUR SSGT SHOUT VULGARITIES AT US. NOW GEN Y MUST TALK NICELY AND REASON WITH THEM. WHEN REPORTING TO CMPB FOR NS, NO FAMILY MEMBERS ALLOWED THEN. NOW GEN Y HAVE PARENT SENDING THEM OFF TILL THE POINT THEY LEAVE.....So who is to blame for our NS Men going soft ???
    • Hiller  •  1 year 1 month ago
It starts from the top. Just check out the Generals, Admirals and such. They too are soft. Book smart but no experience. should send them to Libya and do what military men do. Then can say they have standard. So for now, just paper Generals and nothing else. Maybe should call them Paper General or General Paper. No difference.

Poor chap.I think his live in the army is finished.Surely everyone in the knew bout this.Where mindef going to posted him after his bmt.?????If the maid is an Indonesian, surely Pres. Bambang will laugh at BG Teo having a soldier cant even carries his own backpack. What the hell you have latest fighter plane, submarine etc.....and army guy good in computer warfare.Even now every sunday filipino maid are making fun of this issues at lucky plaza.......abu sayap is enough to frightened them..MOM should identify the maid too and commended her helping our injured serviceman.
    • Bored  •  1 year 2 months ago
dont blame him. His parents had this happened since he was probably a kid. these days, maid practically execute everything for their young master/princess as if they are handicap. kids no longer can eat/do simple things (getting a drink or whatsoever) without assistance. this is one of many facets in life of a typical pampered kids in the Y/Z.... generation to come.

what is RESPONSIBLITIES????? my folks told us we should maximise the use of maid whenever possible so we dont have to lift any finger!!
    • Thomas  •  1 year 2 months ago
I do not think he has a shoulder injury or whatever, if so he would be in a shoulder sling or something to support his injured arm. If he is truly a Gentleman Soldier after seeing this photo,
he might like to reply and give his reasons for this photo, if not I think he will not be able to tolerate the military training unless he is downgraded to a service vocation. Hmm.... if this soldier is such a spoilt brat why not attach him to US Forces in Afghanistan to taste the actual combat action, I think he will come back in a bodybag !! Sorry to say this ....... Sorry .....

Armed forces that have never, ever been tested. Firstly , where is the threat they are supposed to protect against? There is more Zionist money tied up in the little red dot than anywhere else in asia, do not think that anyone will even be permitted within 10nm of here if theyre not wanted.
Number 2, its widely admitted amongst Singaporeans that NS men are designed/ trained to only hold out for 48 hours MAX - which is part and parcel of my previous point, ie the Australians/Americans/British will be here to save the day like good Zionist slaves- what happened here almost 70 years ago wont happen again- because Singapore has already been invaded by the PRC cheap labour, go to any hawker centre now in the Heartlands, they are here en masse. Anyone who invades SIngapore tomorrow will simply leave becuase of the expense and the crap Mediacorp controlled TV.

These NS boys (thats all they are, boys) are mollycuddled little tarts and get to go home to their mummies at night. How about crawling through swamps, eating raw rat and drinking their own piss, before gutting a macaque for dinner? Thats training for a Soldier.

Anyway the powers that be still try and fox you that this is a worthwhile venture, an absolute requirement , a CPF duty(!!!) with their "This is Home, Truly..." propaganda before each movie...who's home is it? No one can afford to call this place home anymore..government gets richer, aunties crawling around collecting cardboard, graduates on less than 2k per month(its what the PM earns in 2 hours). What are you defending? The " Easiest Place in Asia to do Business" I believe its described (for Goldmans/PWC/Shell/Vitol/HSBC), roll out the magnificent Marina Bay for f1....The Fullerton, The Sail, The Sands....Hougang or Woodlands it is not!!!

I bet the maid in the picture is scolded or beaten by her Singaporean masters for the fault of their perfect son...A truly disgarceful picture of a spolit and deluded SE Asian nation.

I worked near Joo Koon MRT station. There's a camp nearby. Occasionally after work, you will see some young army boys taking the train. On one occasion there were 4 young men in army uniform boarded the train and sat down thru out the journey from Joo Koon to the east part of Singapore. Some old dears including a lady with a young boy came on board separately but these guys would just ignore them and continue with their discussions loudly about girls. They do not have any big bags with them. They do not look tired or injured but were laughing and busy teasing each other loudly. What I saw was some tired looking men (who seemed to work in the outdoor or construction field due to their slightly soiled clothes or overalls) would kindly stand up and gave up their seats instead....

It has also become a common sight on the trains; to see young, able body, teenagers busy playing with their IPhone, IPad and what-nots and refusing to give up their seats to old folks, pregnant lady or young children too.

And now the Army is "counseling" this lad ? If this had happened in the UK, he would be in Colchester Military Prison, doing 20Km hikes with a 35Kg back pack, cold showers and a very loud Sergent major reminding him that he was not born a man, but crawled out from under a rock.

4 weeks later, he would return to his unit and be a better soldier.

"counseling....." I wonder if he also gets a free I-Phone ?

A gentleman conducts himself in a respectable manner both in public and in private. His standards for himself should not become lower because no one is watching.

This young man has took the courage to identify himself as the person in the photo amidst a sea of finger-waggers and tongue-wagging netizens. I am confident someone who has the courage to do this has what it takes to be a better person in both public and private spheres.
