    One word: Aljunied

    By Cherian George

As the Workers' Party A-team addressed their ecstatic supporters from an upper floor of Deyi Secondary this afternoon, a nondescript sign below them read "LIGHTNING RISK ALERT". It spoke more eloquently than the lightning-logo flags and placards wielded by hundreds of PAP supporters, of the storm brewing over Aljunied GRC.

You can bet that the ruling party will throw everything in its formidable arsenal at Low Thia Khiang and company. Equally, though, the raucous heckling that greeted every PAP candidate — even when Zainul Abidin Rasheed cheered "Majulah Singapura!" to try to shame WP supporters into gentlemanly conduct  — suggests that the WP isn't about to be intimidated.

Singapore has had hot GRCs before but Aljunied 2011 shoots off the temperature scale. This isn't because the Opposition necessarily have a better chance here and now than in Eunos GRC in 1988 (when the PAP scraped through by 1.8 points).

No, this one is special because never before has a contest so perfectly embodied the fundamental, irreconcilable tension in Singapore's electoral politics.

Set aside the roughly 25 percent of voters at each end of the political spectrum — the partisans who will vote for the PAP and the Opposition irrespective of who's standing and who's won the debates. It's the middle 50 percent or so that ultimately decides the fate of Parliamentary seats.

Mr George Yeo and his Aljunied team arriving at Deyi Secondary School to submit their nominations. (Yahoo! photo/Henry …

This broad middle ground, I sense, considers the PAP to be the natural party of government right now, on account of having a larger team of able, experienced and trustworthy administrators and a more detailed plan for Singapore than the Opposition. Swing voters also acknowledge that the PAP includes a handful of truly outstanding individuals, who they're glad are on the Singapore team (though most Singaporeans would not praise them too loudly, lest the PAP grow up proud and complacent; we are all Amy Chuas that way).

At the same time, middle-ground voters believe it's sensible to have checks and balances on PAP power. Since other institutions such as the press are stopped from providing that, they should send an Opposition presence into Parliament. They've also noted that, lately, the best heavyweights in the Opposition ranks are superior to the worst lightweights on the PAP side. Given a choice, they would pick the former at the expense of the latter — but that choice is usually not available.

In most other contests in this and previous GEs, the choice offered to swing voters made it easier for them to decide one way or another. Those inclined to vote for the Opposition could tell themselves that, well, the PAP guys weren't particularly likeable, so they deserve to be taken down a notch. Those leaning towards the PAP could silence the Opposition voice in their heads by saying that the Opposition candidates weren't impressive, even after giving allowance to their underdog status.

Aljunied 2011 removes these excuses. On the one side is a PAP team that's hard to dislike. A veteran former journalist, Zainul Abidin, who is genuinely popular and is being mentioned as a future Speaker of Parliament. An intriguing new candidate and possible future PM, Ong Ye Kung, who has spent quality time at the NTUC and shows a determination to work for workers. And an anchor minister, George Yeo, who has distinguished himself as one of Singapore's best ever foreign ministers. In the last GE, Yeo was the first Cabinet Minister to call a halt to the mudslinging against James Gomez, and in these polls he has continued to take the high road, denying snipers the pleasure of accusing him of gutter politics. Today, he called the WP A-team "worthy opponents".

WP chief Low Thia Khiang will lead his team in contesting Aljunied GRC. (Yahoo! photo/Henry Lim)

On the WP side, too, is a team that defies all the stereotypes. Fly-by-night opportunists who are dormant between elections? Low Thia Khiang is known as a hardworking grassroots MP. And his decision to leave his safe seat in Hougang for the fight of his life confirms yet again his steely idealism. Low calibre? In the early 1980s, Lee Kuan Yew likened the Opposition leaders to DC3 propeller planes while the PAP's were Boeing 707 jets. But in Chen Show Mao, the WP have a Dreamliner whose specifications match any high-flier in the PAP fleet. It's as if, like diligent children in paternalistic Singapore, Low's WP has taken note of every criticism the PAP has levelled at the Opposition and has now come back with an answer for everything.

Middle-of-the-road voters in Aljunied GRC must now feel the heat of the critical decision before them. It boils down to this twin conundrum:

Do they prize the goal of a stronger, better Opposition enough to sacrifice a set of outstanding present and potential PAP office holders, whose absence from government would be missed by Singaporeans?

Or do they treasure quality governance sufficiently to reject the worthiest set of Opposition candidates to have ever been offered to the electorate and whose victory would boost democratic politics?

The choice between good government and a strong opposition has been a perennial one. But never before has it been posed as starkly as now, in Aljunied GRC.

I don't know what Aljunied's voters are thinking about the momentous decision before them. But I can imagine what swing voters in other constituencies must be feeling:

Thank goodness we don't live in Aljunied.

My gut feeling is that many opposition party candidates will defeat PAP candidates on 7 May.

People are just fed up with PAP for not listening to our grouses and problems.

As at today, PAP government did not return to power as they did in the past.

You can see many scared faces on TV.

The time for opposition rule is near!

Let us welcome them with open arms.

LTK, I feel that you may win BIG ths time. People knew that if you loses, it is the end of Singapore. They cant complain anymore.

Good luck to you and your team members. See you in Parliament soon.

I am not confident Opposition will win that many seats because:

(1). All these online outpouring of anti-PAP sentiments do not necessarily translate into sufficient votes to take down PAP MPs. We have the same drama in 2006. Sure, PAP percentage win went down, as will happen on 7 May too. But only 2 Opp.got into Parliament in 2006. So PAP got a freehand.

        (2) As Observer Tan rightly pointed out, all these online anti PAP outpourings come from Internet savvy people. But there are also many non Internet savvy fuddy duddies who may vote PAP. Unlike in 2006, the availability now of the Internet ( online blogs, Facebook, etc) creates the impression of a tidal wave of anti PAP voters. This may be illusory.

        (3) Sadly, Singaporeans are generally ' kiasu' and selfish. If their HDB estates are well maintained, lifts work, have abundant car parks, with spacious gardens, then they will be very reluctant to throw out PAP. This is why Marine Parade, AMK, Bishan can never be won by Opp, as PAP have ensured that the residents there are so pampered that they are effectively bribed into voting PAP.

        (4) A corollary of (3) is that Singaporeans are very practical, or are pragmatists, they w'ont sacrifice for ideolo---- i.e. can be easily bribed with material goods. PAP knows that. Current complaints arise because PAP misjudged level of ' bribes' needed. Also some of it went to foreigners (FT)

        (5) Finally, the business/finance/banking communities bigwigs who benefited mightily from the system will vote PAP, guaranteed. They stay in the same high class neighborhoods as Ministers/MPs (not HDB). They play golf, tennis with each other at same country clubs. Their wives vacation together, go to same beauty salons. Their kids go to the same schools . They are appointed to the boards of Govt Linked Companies. Trust me, I know, I mix around occasionally with these fat cats.

Given the way the cards are stacked against the Opp, you still tell me PAP will lose big time. A few percentage points for sure, but big time, not possible

Incidentally, I am not Singaporean . I emigrated here from China 25 years ago because I admired the PAP government then. Now I am not so sure.

Agreed with you Qin Zhao Li that all that talk, comments and remarks by netizens may not translate into votes for the Opposition.

But, this election can go either way.

Firstly, PAP did not become the government yesterday unlike in 2006's Nomination Day.

So, that alone showed that things are different now.

All these anti-PAP comments may or may not be just hot air. Nobody knows for sure. There must be reasons why people are so venemous in their comments and views of the PAP, right?

So, we already lived under the PAP rule for so long. Where does that got us today?

We must not be afraid to try something new. For all you know, it may be better!

Majula Singapora and Majula Singaporean. The nation belongs to the people not just the action parties.....We will have to decide our children's future not just in money index alone but also happiness index.
      • Weng 1 year 1 month ago
Yeah, the PAP should be just renamed AP, Action Party, it doesn't listen to the people anymore. The PAP will of cos, say it's not true, they always think they are right. But they are wrong here, because I am the People and they are the party.
      • Ong Teng Cheong 1 year 1 month ago
They won't because they need to remind us to Pay and Pay. If we chose them we cannot complain high cost of living because they already prepare you in their sologan Pay and Pay.

Yes, the future of our next generation is at stake. I caannot imagine these kids would want to fight for jobs in the petrol station or restaurants when they grow up and armed with a diploma.

      To me,

Mr George Yeo is a very down to earth person. He really helps the residents in Aljunied. Kudos to him unlike wong kan seng, mah bow tan n Dr ng xxx hern(Education minister)...in his today speech....my gosh he was holding on to a piece of paper!!None of the female ministers did that. No comment. So much as we want to support George Yeo...however, this is not possible as we are all looking at the welfare of Singaporeans. Please vote for LTK.
      • Ade 1 year 1 month ago
No choice leh, t is a very important decision as it involves the livelihood of all Singaporeans.

        We want a BETTER TOMORROW.

Lim Hng Kiang is another dud. Golf addict. Pay him millions to play golf.

Too bad George. You are in a wrong constituency!
    • Ian  •  1 year 1 month ago
This is a classic case of two good teams, both with talented individuals that are capable of representing their people and constituency well.

It is a pity that one team would lose and the losing team may in fact have a better qualified individual. My preference would be - the SMC basis of voting. Let the voters decide who they want to represent them.

Accordingly, In SMC, New candidates to politics would have to learn the ropes hands-on by addressing and feeling the ground and ultimately letting the electorate decide.
      The VOTERS SHOULD DECIDE.

Entry into parliament should NOT be through the GRC format – every Member of Parliament seat should be EARNED.

Mr Low, I salute you for having the courage to step out of your little kingdom in Hougang and going for broke in Aljunied GRC.

Rest assured that we residents in Aljunied GRC will give you our overwhelming support in making a breakthrough in this GRC.

Voters will now decide whether they want an opposition or lose everything with a one party Parliament.

As the GRC is a double edged sword, the PAP may lose all 5 seats in one go.

Good luck and may your team HAMMER it's way to Parliament.
      • Qin zhao Li 1 year 1 month ago
Yes, Mr Low deserves our support. He is risking everything with his A team here. We cannot let him down by still voting a PAP who no longer listens to the people.
    • quizzy13  •  1 year 1 month ago
I thought Low would be staying and defend his Hougang constituency and let Sylvia Lim lead Aljunied GRC...well Low finally decided to leave his comfort zone, his fateful Hougang SMC resident who has been supporting him numerous times, to Aljunied GRC together with Sylvia Lim and Chen Siow Mao. Seems like WP is going all out to wrest Aljunied GRC, by hook or crook! It may be a big gamble which the WP may end up losing big, but if they win, that's already 5 seats in parliament. With an experienced player in Mr Low in running a town council and as an MP, plus Sylvia Lim who has shown her credentials in her years as an NCMP, ALJUNIED RESIDENT PLEASE DO EACH AND EVERY SINGAPOREAN A BIG FAVOUR BY VOTING THIS WP'S A-TEAM INTO PARLIAMENT!
    • DM  •  1 year 1 month ago
"Thank goodness we don't live in Aljunied?" Are you kidding me? I wish I am living in Aljunied. It is a no-brainer. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you don't vote in WP so that they can challenge the PAP carte blanche policy, then stop complaining about this government ever again. I hate it when uncles and aunties moan and moan about the government and then sell their soul and their children soul and their children children soul to this group of ivory tower elites and their henchmen. Because of this WP A-Team, my boss, a citizen of only 10 short years is determined to throw her vote with the WP despite being pro-PAP because she said "if not now, when?". I am at the opposite spectrum of the political ideas, I am anti-PAP but I admired her pragmatism. She She added that if this election fails to bring in opposition candidates of such calibre, then it is really the end of democracy in Singapore because she cannot forsee the opposition having the ability to challenge PAP in another 5 years, not when PAP is determined to bring in new citizens to shore up their dwindling popularity. Voters of Aljunied, there are only three words: Vote WP.

      Aljunied:

Give Workers Party a chance! Give Singaporeans a chance. I myself staying in Bukit Panjang. So i cannot use action to help them. But for reason, residents of Aljunied, I have to pin my hope on you. Seriously!!

Give ourselves a chance, a term is really not too long. 5 years only. If they cannot do @#$% then anytime PAP can take it back, right?
    • Zadne  •  1 year 1 month ago
We should vote for Chiam and Low. This is their last fight. It is either survive or no more. I really hate to see them go.

After all their life or most of their lifes spent on the scene as competitor to the ruling parties. They have shown their passion, commitment and capabilities.

Voters, judge yourself. When you have strong competitors, you are the ones that benefit most. Because it make the ruling party work harder for you and me.

Currently, the ruling party aren't working that hard. We needs Low and Chiam team to give them a WAKE UP CALL.

      Don't lose these 2 people!!!
    • Observer  •  1 year 1 month ago
Its a pity the PAP candidates in the Aljunied GRC include some likeable people, and I dare say people of integrity. However, the contest is not between individuals and personalities, but over the party policies; or how well the PAP has handled issues for the past 5 years.

Likewise the Workers Party candidates are honest down-to-earth people who have the credentials to serve in Parliament; what we want are these people who can articulate the alternate views of the population, simply because through the arrogance of the PAP, they have lost the faith of the electorate.

An intelligent and conscientious opposition is a part of loyalty to country. Don't be afraid of opposition. Remember, a kite rises against, not with the wind.
    • Jason  •  1 year 1 month ago
regarding the high road taken by PAP ministers...it could very well they had prior arrangement/pact that certain ministers will target which opponent, leaving the direct opposing team to take the high road. So u see Law minister and Mah Bow Tan & Teo Chee Hean attack WP's Chen & LowTK. leaving George Yeo to play gentleman.

But this time...The WP A team , with all the heavyweights could easily outgun the PAP team.

Vote for WP - real change and hope is in the air. Lets create history Aljunied GRC voters - 1st Opposition GRC from Aljunied !! We count on you brave voters of Aljunied..Make it happen!
    • BillyMa  •  1 year 1 month ago
I'm Aljunied voter. I like George Yeo & Lim Hwee Wah individually but I'll not vote for PAP.
I'm against the directions of the PAP government. I'm against PAP policies that cause pains & sufferings for the common people. A ruling party with insensitive people who keep telling us to endure for a better tomorrow while we are already dying today.

I believe many Aljunied voters are in the same dilemma. But as the PAP always pressed singaporeans to do - you need to bite the bullets now to ensure a better future - PAP ministers enhort us to always think about the future & don't be afraid to make painful decisions.

So here I am. I'll take their advise & do what is necessary for our future. I'll vote for WP.
    • Kenny  •  1 year 1 month ago
Mr. Low, your true courage and decision to leave your comfort SMC into a fiercely fought GRC is highly admirable. I am quietly confident of the outcome not to disappoint you, else I am more disappointed being a true born Singaporean.
    • Truly Singaporean  •  1 year 1 month ago
Please also provide support and cheers for Bishan-Tao Payoh GRC too. Many people are sick of DPM Wong and his team have graet desire to change. Politician veteran Mr Chaim is courageous to lead his team there to fight the battle.

Cheers!!! for Mr Chiam and his "A" Team!!!!!!
    • David  •  1 year 1 month ago
I disagree with the writer. I will be most happy to be able to vote under this GRC. I would like to ask the PAP team on certain issues that until now no elaborate answer is given. Why is there the need to have such high percentage of foreign workers in order to attract foreign investments? What are the attributes that Singapore workers lacked? How can we be more competitive beside just keep asking us to go for training and yet no improvement to our competitiveness? Are the foreign companies holding us ransom that we have to give in to all their wants? Why can't we attract companies that are willing to work together in a win-win situation instead that are willing to employed locals and trained them?
Why the transport situation hasn't improved? Now MBT is going to build more flats but do u think the current infrastruture can accommodate more people even if we managed to house them?
To date PAP just said this and that without giving us answers we want regarding a lot of issues. They should be frank and let us know what went wrong and how they are going to rectify it and not keep saying that more workers will be out of jobs if they are agreeable to what have been said by the citizens or opposition parties. If they only can improve the economy by sacrificing it's people then they are not fit to govern the country.
    • Citizenfoo  •  1 year 1 month ago
If Singaporeans DO NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE to vote in as many opposition this election, then we can only blame ourselves when PAP implements further policies that marginalize Singaporeans in the next 5 years.....

If GST, ERP, taxes, hospital bills goes up (Or if the suggested implementation of Mean Testing actually materialize - pay bills according to what you earn is executed), HDB prices for first time owners goes up, cost of living goes up and we have to take it as it comes because we dont have a VOICE to object in parliament, we have only ourselves to blame....
    • Sad Singaporean  •  1 year 1 month ago
Dear Mr George Yeo, thanks for visiting us at Hougang Ave 3 last month. I wish i could vote for you but PAP can make me suffer so much for the past 5 years. I have a driving license for the past 10 years but yet to owe a car. you should know the reason right? If you really wanna serve the people please join the opposition.
    • S'porean Lim  •  1 year 1 month ago
Please vote for the opposition at Aljunied.

After so much online anger, the PM still aims for a population of 6.5m. Mah BT still insist that current HDB policies is perfect. If there is any other way to get the PAP to listen to us, I would say let's try that way. But when have they ever agree to amend any policies?

Please vote for the opposition, I feel this is our only chance, & our only way.I don't want to live in a small island with 6.5m ppl, I don't want my kids to buy a BTO for S$1m...
