Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expects the ruling People's Action Party to make a good showing at the polls on Saturday.

On Thursday, Mr Lee noted that the PAP's new candidates have been doing well on the ground, reported Channel News Asia.

He said: "Nine days is very intense. Everybody gears up tremendously and there is a certain rise in the temperature all round Singapore because people know this is not ordinary times. This is elections (period) and people are canvassing for support, for votes."

His optimism comes after he apologised to Singaporeans during a lunchtime rally at UOB plaza on Tuesday for PAP's mistakes in handling certain issues such as the flooding of Orchard Road and the escape of Mas Selamat.

He felt that the apology was important because the government needed to connect emotionally with Singaporeans.

"We considered carefully and I thought this was a suitable message to Singaporeans at this stage of the campaign, to focus minds on key issues," he said.

Regarding the possible outcome in hotspot Aljunied group representation constituency (GRC), where the Workers' Party has fielded its 'A team', which includes party chief Low Thia Khian and party chairman Sylvia Lim, Mr Lee believes the PAP will win, but it would be a "very tough" fight.

The Prime Minister also commented on the presence of stickers in some estates that said the GST would be increased after the election.

"I have seen some of the stickers around -- they shouldn't be there. (They have) been put on town council property and the town council (will) look into it. And some of these, the police would have to look into it also," he said.

He and his Ang Mo Kio candidates gave out new flyers to residents to dispel such rumours and assure Singaporeans that GST will not be raised after GE.
