S’pore public invited to air views on animal welfare

Singaporeans are invited to voice their concerns about animal welfare issues and offer suggestions on amendments to legislation on the matter at the largest animal protection event to be held in Singapore this Saturday.

More than 600 participants are expected to attend, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam.

"I welcome this event, and support it.  How a society treats animals, which cannot take care of themselves, says much about the nature of the society.  The increasing support we are getting for animal welfare events is heartening," said Shanmugam, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nee Soon group representation constituency.

Louis Ng, executive director of animal welfare group ACRES, one of the main organisers of the event, said, "There has been significant progress in the animal protection movement in Singapore over the past year. Through this event, we hope that more people will become aware of the need to protect animals and most importantly help shape animal protection policies in Singapore. With the support of the public, Singapore will undoubtedly be a leader in the animal protection movement in this region."

The event will take place this Saturday, 25 February at Chong Pang Community Club from 8am to 5pm. Log on to ACRES for more information on the event.

Why is everyone blaming the animals, if they are able to take care of themselves like cleaning up after they have done their buisness or prepare their own meals then we wouldn't be having them as domestic pets, correct!!
It all boils down to the mentality and responsibility of the owner, as a owner of a pet I do see some that never picks up the left overs of their pet, and some even couldn't be bother to walk their dogs they just leave it to their maids who is most of the time taliking on the phone.
If you know the behavious of animals they are really very affectionate and longs for lots of love. They are really a very trust worthy companions I dare say better then humans.

Dear all "Dog Lovers", before you take in a puppy, please have this in mind. Make sure you are prepared to live with and take good care of him/her for the next 15 years (minimum). They need not just food and a cage. Not just you are the owner, but your maid is the care taker.

Hi Steven, I think the word "cage" in your last sentence should be "LOVE" instead. Don't you think so? Only convicts deserve to be put in a cage....Dogs are like kids to us. For us, who are animal lovers, and as a parent who has children don't put them in cages. Choice of words is important. Cheerio : )

Mark - well said, I don't cage my dogs too. Steven, you are right to enforce commitment when adoption is considered, these all brings us to being good owners who look after our pets like familt members :D

      Dear dog owners..!

I would like to place a kind request. Train your maids who brings the dogs out for walking or for “small business or big business.“

Don’t let your dog’s poo-poo or urinate around the sheltered pathways. The pathway pillars stained by dogs waste matters and urine at the HBD estate where I live. Those people resting on wooden and iron benches that located close to the pathways have to inhale the stink smell of dogs’ waste.

Why can’t our Town Council do something for it? Please advise the dog owners. I do like dog.

we need tougher laws against animal abusers
      • tea 3 months ago
I can't agreed more on that and support harsh punishment on animal abuser.
Their lives are no where superior than those animals they abused.

Government ought to start re-evaluating their policy on the pets.

1st - They need to ban island-wide sales of pets in pet shops and restrict them to just an area. (Example, pasir ris farmway - to stop impulsive buyers)

2nd - They need to implement a law on the sales of pets (example: at farmway) by having the buyers hand in their IC for verification purposes and to submit to AVA for the transaction from farmway seller.

3rd - After the sale of animal and after IC submission. Owners has a window period of 3 months to apply for pet license (though AVA need to reconsider the sterialization of animals till at least they reach adulthood which is 1 year of age, as it greatly affect the growth and health of dog/cat if done before they reach adulthood) - (Right now to apply for license, you need to microchip, sterialize, vaccines up to shot etc)

4th - Heavily punish home breeders that breed pets for money, and likewise to animal abusers.

That way, we can hugely lower the abandonment of pets, since each pets will be accountable for, and in the event that impulsive buyers want to give their pets away, they have to make sure they transfer the license of ownership to new owners (most people after giving up their pets, didn't make sure their pets are well taken care of), If they failed to do so, any abusive cases, the new owners (who were caught) and the previous owners (via microchip scan) will both be heavily punish.

It definitely will take at least a decade for fruition. But at the very least, it guarantee us lesser problems regarding strays in future.

And in the meantime, please let the animal welfare groups rehome the strays instead of killing them within days of capture..

Have you seen a dog getting better treatment than a maid? There are quite a number of cases in the red dot

Future Dog Owners this is for you...

Don't buy a dog because "ITS SO CUTE!!!"

Be prepared to pick up the stinkiest poop, Be prepared to clean pee on your floor, bed, etc. Be prepared to be PATIENT! and train the dog. Be prepared for your furniture to be partially broken/eaten (applicable to big dogs only).

Make sure you check what dogs CAN and CAN'T eat before you give them.

Its not just money which you need to have dog! YOU also need a BIG HEART and STRONG MIND!

I love my two dogs! I have a Silky Terrier (pedigree dog) and Mongrel (Adopted). Love watching them running around the whole house hahaha

To you, they are just your pets...to them, you are their everything.

Their welfare should be taken care to the fullest, most won't live very long like we do.

I just hope Govt relaxed the ruling for HDB owners to keep big dogs.
Mostly those left behind not adopted are the big dogs. I believe there are many HDB owners who don't mind keeping them & I'm quite sure the dogs themselves will be appreciative that they get a home too. Owners will make an effort to bring the big doggies for workout & will not be confining them to the small area in HDB.

Er... by the way, why is a HDB flat goos enough for a family is considered too small for a dog?

Adopting a dog is easy but the care is the most difficult part. Some owners in my area where I live are very irresponsible. Every morning/evening when I walk along the path leading from my home to the LRT station, I have to tread carefully as there are dog shits along the path/grass patches and very smelly. These are owners that do not pick up after their dogs pooed. What is the use of keeping them, walking them but leave tons of shits outside their homes and dirty the common areas? Brainless idiots.

Animal Welfare? Our People's Daily have people coming to defend that it is perfectly okay to cut the shark's fin and throw it over board. Alamak , country look first world but mentality - THIRD WORLD. All this are limited to few people with good heart.

The animals are just like us human, we live on the same planet. These animals should have their own habitats reserved and preserved. ;-)
    • KM  •  3 months ago
Yes please treat the animals well and love them. At the same time also promote responsible animals ownership. i.e. make sure that the droppings of the animals are pick up by the owners. Otherwise fine the owners or citizens take picture of irresponsible ownership and bar them from owning any animals if they are not responsible.

I had seen some dog owners, let their pets sit on hawker centre chairs. Please don't do this.
    • g  •  3 months ago
Unlike some countries where dog roam freely joining the owners for a meal even in a posh restaurant, dogs are not even allowed close to hawker centers. What a shame! Singapore still a long way to go...
