President-elect Tony Tan tops overseas votes

President-elect Tony Tan received the most votes at the tally of overseas votes on Wednesday while Dr Tan Cheng Bock, again, came in a close second.

The Elections Department has completed the counting of overseas votes for the Presidential Election, reported Channel NewsAsia. There was a total of 3,376 voters.

Dr Tony Tan received 1,296 votes, Dr Tan Cheng Bock garnered 1,183 votes, Tan Jee Say had 709 votes and Tan Kin Lian received 184 votes. There were 23 spoilt votes.

The numbers translated into Dr Tony Tan receiving 38 per cent of the overseas votes while Dr Tan Cheng Bock took 35 per cent. Tan Jee Say and Tan Kin Lian had 21 per cent and 0.55 per cent of the votes, respectively.

On Saturday, 2,153,014 votes were cast in Singapore. Dr Tony Tan was elected President with 35.19 per cent of the votes.

With the inclusion of the overseas votes, Dr Tony Tan has garnered a total of 35.2 per cent of votes, while Dr Tan Cheng Bock took 34.85 per cent.

Candidates Tan Jee Say and Tan Kin Lian got 25.04 per cent and 4.91 per cent, respectively.

Both Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock were at the People's Association headquarters for the counting of votes.

Dr Tony Tan thanked overseas voters for voting and Dr Tan Cheng Bock said he was pleasantly surprised at the result as he thought Dr Tony Tan would get a higher percentage of overseas votes, reported the broadcaster.

Dr Tan Cheng Bock also sent a letter to Dr Tony Tan on Wednesday, where he congratulated the latter on being elected President.

"Tomorrow is your installation, I send my best regards to you and Mary. All Singaporeans should now come together to build a united Singapore," wrote Dr Tan Cheng Bock.
