Presidential Election to be held after National Day?

The Presidential Election is unlikely to be held before National Day, given the President's role during the NDP. (AFP file photo)The Presidential Election is unlikely to be held before National Day, given the President's role during the NDP. …

The Presidential Election showdown looks set to occur anytime in the last two weeks of August, after the nation's birthday on 9 August and the National Day Rally usually a week after.

The election must be held by 31 August, the date President S R Nathan will step down when his term ends. Mr Nathan, who just turned 87, has decided not to seek a third term in office.

Analysts believe the possibility of having the election before National Day is extremely unlikely, given the President's role during the National Day Parade.

A spokesperson from Istana told Yahoo! Singapore that this year's President's Star Charity on 31 July will not be the the last event Mr Nathan will attend as the President of Singapore.

"(The) President has many other events lined up in August 2011, such as the National Day Parade and Istana Open House," she said.

The open house will be on 7 August to celebrate National Day and 30 August to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa.

Breaking tradition from the past two Presidential Elections which ended in walkovers, the upcoming election has shaped up to be an exciting one with many firsts.

The first contested election since the 1993 election and the first multi-candidate presidential race in the history of Singapore, this is also the first time both parliamentary and presidential elections are being held in the same year, separated by a mere three months.

Said constitutional expert Thio Li-ann, "Singaporeans have never had two elections in a year before, and the recent General Elections had been extraordinary," hence the likelihood for the Government to have a few months' buffer for people to "cool down before having yet another election."

The National University of Singapore law lecturer also told Today in June that the period between National Day and the National Day Rally — usually held one to two weeks later — is unlikely to be chosen because the focus would be on the Rally, traditionally a high point in the political calendar.

To hold the Presidential Election right before National Day would also stretch resources needed for the parade, said Prof Thio.

NUS adjunct law professor Kevin Tan noted that the date of the election might depend on when the Government wants Parliament to be convened.

"The only reason why they would want to call the election earlier would be if they want to summon Parliament earlier, and for it to be presided over by a new President," said Dr Tan, who specialises in constitutional law, among others.

Now that the incumbent President, and also Singapore's longest serving President, has declined to seek re-election, the presidential race will be fought between three one-time members of the ruling PAP.

The presidential hopefuls who are applying for the Certificate of Eligibility are Dr Tan Cheng Bock, former PAP Member of Parliament (MP); Dr Tony Tan, former Deputy Prime Minister; and Tan Kin Lian, former chief executive officer of NTUC Income.

I prefer Ah Meng(our late orange utan) if it is still around. It can wave, shake hand, take photo with, perform on charity show and most important of all, its cheaper, just peanuts will do.

Korea (South) land area 98,480 sq km, population: 49 million
President Lee monthly salary US12,000.00 or S$15,000.00
President Lee donated all his personal wealth of $30 million and his monthly salary of US$12,000.00 or S$15,000.00 (Yearly salary S$180,000.00 only) to charities.
He asks to keep a retirement home in Seoul.

President Lee works for nothing for the better of South Korea. In addition, he also has to deal with the militant-styled labour unions, student unions, 38 parallel border tensions and a nuclear-armed neighbour, etc.

Singapore land area 693 sq km population: 5.0 million
      President salary S$4,000,000.00
but workers' salary are falling...housings. medical & health care, education, food, utilities, COE, ERP costs, etc are rising,

      Who agree with me:
The EP election slip should have 4 boxes:
1 for Mr Tan Kin Lian.
1 for Dr Tan Cheng Bock
      1 for Dr Tony Tan.
1 more for None of the Above, i.e. No President Required.
As this is a Elected Presidency voting, why Singaporean do not have a choice to decide?
As taxpayer money are being utilized to pay for his salary.
      • By stander 10 months ago
        I fully agree with you....

Yes!!! I will throw my vote in there. Else how to express our view that NO president is needed? Don't turn up on Voting day?

      He chicken out.
If he comes into the contest he will receive the lowest number of votes.
That will be a mockery and disgarce for himself and the white-white personnel.
for the past 2 terms he was not elected BUT selected by those few only.

Ones need to ask what has he done for the good of Singapore? Charity Show even kids can do, shaking hands kids can do, open the safe kids can do, obey order kids can do, meeting people kids can do and whatelse he does? What kids cannot do? He knows very well he cannot win this time round that is why he step down. Even if he does not want to step down also cannot because TVB and TKL will give him a hard time to win as he has no track record as President. So the best is for him to retire peacefully.Good Health to your retirement.

People of Singapore, my fellow Singaporeans.
Like it or not, as much as I myself is against
for the money can be release as CPF, we have
      no other choices.
So, either rejects ALL votes or VOTE OUT, TT
whom is the worst of all.
This is NOT a show of approval of TKL. Its a show
of dissaproval by us to the PAP backed candidate.
He was "playing" with people money all these years
and now "try to understand the people"???? huh ??
If TT can comes out and say "he will release people
CPF at 55 with immediate effects" then we ponder.

Now its time again and calling 61% to join hands
NOW or NEVER.for Singapore & Singaporeans.
We CANT be divisive now. Be decisive. For us and
our future generation. NOT for the glorifying in the
face of the world to be FIRST at our expenses.

      ALL THE BEST SINGAPOORER. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please held election on a weekday so that we can get a whole day off instead of a half day sat. Prefer Monday so that we can have a long weekend.

Mr. Nathan's Hi 5 maybe says $5million. Too bad he already knows people will not vote for him.
I'm for Tan K L as I know some money will go to some deserving charity. Well Mr. Tony, what's your deal?
    • Tan  •  10 months ago
Mr Nathan, before you leave, can you donated 80% of your salary for the past 12 years to the charity? 31 July is the good day, during President Star Charity, if you still want the respect from Singaporean. 20% or about 7 millions is more than enough for your retirement, please don't be so greedy.

We have suffered the silence for the past 12 years. I hope he would be QUIET too on that day as I have lost my interest completely to hear anything from him! Please give him the money and let him go for good. He won't be able to count them all for the rest of his life.

Is just another 4million gone to the drain every year for Singaporeans...Our Singapore has so much millions to make from the country every day, no matter how we think or want doesnt matter to our government. Why our leaders become like that? or our "NO" is not loud enough?

With such a Million $$$ salary, who will willing to step down?
More "DIGNITY" then President of USA, PM of Japan, Chancellor of Germany & the Whole world.
Longest serving mean in another words, Singaporean have spent / wasted the most money.
Did not stand for third term as he knows jolly well he will lose big time.
As deep inside he know himself what he have, i.e not done, anything for Common Singaporean.
He also know how 'popular" he is to many Singaporean.
Now we have also came to known about the "thing" during the Japanese Occupation.
