MP Lim Wee Kiak apologises for comments on pay

    UPDATE

Member of Parliament Lim Wee Kiak of the Nee Soon group representation constituency has apologised for his remarks linking ministerial pay with the "dignity" of politicians.

In a note on his Facebook page on Friday, MP Lim said he would like to clarify the comments he made to Lianhe Zaobao and reproduced in LianheWanBao. The comments had been quickly slammed by netizens.

He had been quoted by the Chinese paper last week as saying, "If the annual salary of the Minister of Information, Communication and Arts is only $500,000, it may pose some problems when he discuss policies with media CEOs who earn millions of dollars because they need not listen to the minister's ideas and proposals. Hence, a reasonable payout will help to maintain a bit of dignity."

In his Facebook note, the MP said, "I withdraw those remarks and apologise for making them. Dignity cannot be and must not be measured purely in monetary terms."

He said he agreed that the example he gave and his comment that there may be loss of face if the minister's salary is low "is inappropriate and incorrect".

Noting that ministerial pay is a sensitive issue and one that many are concerned about, he said he would like to clarify his comments by making three fundamental points. We have re-posted them below in full:

    1. We need a balanced approach to the question of Ministerial pay.

    2. Personally, I think we should not use pay and perks to attract capable people to come forward to serve. I agree with PM that there is a service to country element and an element of sacrifice expected for the Ministers by the public.

    3. On the other hand, we need to take into consideration their responsibilities and job scope when we remunerate Ministers.

The multi-million dollar pay of ministers was a hot-button issue in Singapore's recent General Election, which saw the ruling People's Action Party win 81 out of 87 seats but at a significantly lower share of the total votes.

Following the results, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced the formation of a committee to review the "basis and level of political salaries". Any pay changes would take effect from 21 May this year.

In reaction to MP Lim's earlier remarks on ministerial pay, Francis Oen posted on Facebook: "Hi Wee Kiat.. Suggest you clarify your statement. Does it mean that only $ talks?! ... And if someone earns less, does it mean he cannot have dignity?"

Winnie Lim tweeted: "So according to Dr Lim Wee Kiak's theory, our ministers will ignore Obama because he earns less than all of them."

On his Facebook page, Dr Lim earlier said that his quote was taken out of context.

"Minister's pay issue is a sensitive one. There must be a balance. After all, capable individuals who are willing to come forward to serve should not so because of pay and perks," he replied to a user's question about his quote.

He added, "On the other hand, they do have families and dependents and need to consider for retirement, etc."

So im guessing only ministers have families and dependents while the rest of us dont?

I am glad that Dr Lim have apologised for his remarks about money==dignity..
One example I like ti mention that contradicts his statement is Mathatma Ghandi who was a lawyer and after practicing for a few yrs in South Africa returned to India as a political activist to gain independence from the British.Although a lawyer, he did not practice law in India but chose a simple life style living in a hut while being a political activist who advocated nonviolence. He was imprisoned several times by the British.
When he was invited to meet the queen and the PM of UK, he still wore a simple loin cloth.
Yet he was revered by his countryman who conferred on him the title Mahatma Ghandi, which means a great soul.Although he was a lawyer,he chose to live a simple life style and he was respected by everyone, even though he was penniless as he refused to bring back all his money and possesions that he acquired when he was a practicing lawyer in South Africa.
The title of minister itself confers on the person a certain amount of dignity and respect irrespective of his salary as a minister.
Mr Obama as President has met with many CEOs who earned multimillion dollars salary compared to his salary of less than a million a year. His dignity was not diminished by his low salary when compared to his CEOs whom he meet at the white house. His dignity in fact was due tohis position as president of the USA who is the most powerful person in the world.
As a minister, there are many other benefits that even a CEO do not have.Ministers have pension, free medical treatment (or about $8)for a stent operation, tracel in first class, have immediate access to many people including doctors when they are sick, etc. These perks should be considered when computing how much a minister should get.
Too high a salary will attract the wrong people to serve, while too low a salary may deter a good honest and capable person to serve.A right balance should or can be achieved by the job scope and the performance of the minister,
The PM should realease the assets and money of all MPs and ministers annually to the public.
This is one way of accountablitiy and transparency.
The fact that a ex-minster or even MP can hold multiple directorships, in itself can compensate for the loss of income when they leave office
So there is no comparison to say that US presidents can make a lot of money by their memoirs and talks.MInisters and MPs here also can still make a lot of money when they leave office.
We do expect that a minster salary should be sufficient for him to lead a respectable life style that befits his office.

Excellent comment Mr Senior Citizen - but the 'too low a salary' bit - I beg to differ! The honor of representing the people of the Constituency,GRC or Singapore cannot be equated in $ and cents. This is where our 'system' went morally wrong. It encouraged a 'moneytheistic' approach and turned our society to materialism. Technocrats have their place and sometimes we have to entice them with incentives (they could well earn higher than the PM) because of their skills and solutions they bring - but they should be civil servants. If they dont make the grade or give the solutions - it is easier to 'let them go'.

One of the reasons for giving our politicians high salaries is the claim that only these talented people can steer the country well. However there are many people struggling to make ends meet. That alone is an example of how the country is not well run. That alone is enough reason to cut their pay, because it is proof that they are not doing a good job. SO let's not even talk about giving them the supposed dignity and providing (more than enough) for their families and dependents.

Hmm So when Obama earns that amount you are talking about,he does not have dignity?
      Joke

Well said. So, most Singaporeans in general have the LOWEST DIGNITY for salary range from SGD 800 to SGD 8000, as compared to their million-dollar-salary.

I deemed this as an indirect insult and LWK had just rubbed salt deep into our wounds.

With such 'pleasing words' to his bosses' ears, LWK may well harbor high hopes of being in the Cabinet next term.

To call yourself a MP. You do not have the qualities to fit in as one. You are just wasting our monies to pay for your so call "dignity" salary. From the way you speak, you are the one who will despise the poor.
      • ANGT 1 year 0 months ago
How to be a MP if he does not actually know the meaning of a simple word dignity. Even a poor man does have dignity. Wrong to equate money with dignity. He is only good at CARRYING hoping to be promoted to Minister of State. FAT HOPE, WAIT LONG LONG!!!!

PAP selection process for their candidate is flawed.
In fact , when Dr. Lim came in in 2006 , I know this chap is useless.
And true enough , I am proven right.
It's very sad that PAP have such people.
In fact PAP have a lot of supporters who are totally useless too.
They only cost the downfall of PAP faster

Half of the world's leaders have less dignity since they don't earn as much as PAP ministers, that includes LKY & his PAP team back in the old days, our parents, grandparents, you and me who paid taxes to pay for Mr Lim Wee Kiak's dignified salary.

Strange, very strange. When Obama speaks to Bill Gates, or Warrren Buffet, or Jack Welsh, does he feel ashamed?? I am sure Obama, despite having a peanut salary compared to these billioniares, commands A LOT OF RESPECT from these very very rich guys!

The course of history has always been charted by world leaders, leaders who lived and fought for a cause greater than and beyond themselves.

Mother Teresa – immortalised for her 45 years of ministry to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 .

Nelson Mandela served 27 years in prison for his stand and fight against racial discrimination. He wrote history when he led his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994. He was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Sun Yat-Sen, widely regarded the “Founding Father of Modern China” spent much of his life in exile. His chief legacy lies in he Three Principles of the People: nationalism, democracy, and the people's livelihood.

History books bear no record of any million-dollar salaries accrued to Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, and Sun Yat-Sen. Theie ideals transcended money payments.

Their lives and the causes they each championed personified dignity.

Theie lives bore not just dignity, they gave dignity to the people they served.

It is tragic and shameful that a Singapore “leader” ties dignity to a Pay-check and not to a Purpose they stand for. In fact, putting a price-tag to a leadership position, especially a stratospherical one in the millions, strips it of the very attribute the cabinet is in want – dignity.

It is a sad thing when our nation debates how much we should pay our national leaders...

How did we come to such a state?

Are we so impoverished of spiritual and moral dimensions that we have to put this issue under a review committee? And with all the skepticism surrounding what could be the outcome of the committee's finding, it just points to something BASIC we should have been focusing on instead.

      Where do we begin?

National leaders, like, in the olden days, the village chiefs are people who are to be held with high honor and regard because of the sacrifice they make to better the lives of others. They are usually talented people who have walked this earth for sometime, accumulated enough wisdom through real life experiences and who are willing to contribute their wisdom with the rest of his people. They are usually fair people and their sole intent is to give...

Where are the likes of our older statesmen such as Goh Keng Swee, Rajaratnam, Toh Chin Chye, David Marshall, etc who paved the way for a better Singapore.

I do not know Chen Show Mao, but it appears to me he comes closest to such leaders we should aspire to have. He has not only won the people of Aljunied he has also won the hearts of many Singaporeans I happen to speak with, including the young kids who wanted to take him as a role model. He has everything to lose but he has decided to lay it down and to come forward to serve...

I am very sure that deep down inside every Singaporean's heart there is this deep yearning for such people to come forward as our national leaders. We want to feel proud they represent us. We want to feel proud we are not selfish people.

We want to feel proud we belong to that little red dot with richness that do not come from just material things but from the richness of the heart...

If we allow political office to become a upward career path for some to make millions in their salary (when many people are struggling), then we need to seriously think and get back to our basics...

This is great info for all Singaporeans, now we all know that when our ministers discuss policies with company CEOs etc, they must first submit their payslip for perusal. I bet the main reason why US President like Bush and Obama cannot convince terrorist leaders to lay down their arms is because they are not drawing multi-million salary.

      MP Lim Wee Kiak,

I do not know if you think Singaporeans were borned last night but definitely not this morning.

If you want "dignity", please do not be a politician. Every politician in the world is a "liar" thus lies and dignity do not equate.

A minister or public offier holder can be dignified only if he or she execute this duty to serve the people and nation honourably and selflessly. Todate, I do not see the "selfless" part in any of the PAP ministers and MPs - PAP members have lost their "heart" to serve the people.

This may sound idealistic but in my opinion, Low KT and Chaim ST for their age and effort are serving the people and they deserve the word "dignity". What Goh Kheng Swee, Lim Kim San, Ong Pang Boon, etc did for Singapore was "dignified".

What have any present PAP minister or MP done to consider yourself in the league of these esteemed contributors to Singapore and its people. Please note, MM Lee and SM Goh were not even in the same league as they were more than adequately compensated for the job they were paid to do.

      Hello, LWK,
if you brave enough to defend this ideolo----, you will brave enough to know the consequences. Dignity is come from sincere heart. You are a man with no heart. Whoever votes on you also I think 'see no evil & hear no evil' attitude. Only $$$$$$$ in your eyes and theirs. You don't know what is a meaning of hardship and work hard. You have been corrupt by PAP to become one of them. Let's see how far you can be one of those puppet in our government. Like a parrot !!!

I am really appalled at THIS MP'S REMARK !!!!!!

In a nutshell ...... THE SUM OF SALARY = THE AMOUNT/VALUE OF DIGNITY!!!

If this were the case POOR! POOR! SINGAPOREANS!! .....
      AND THE LESS FORTUNATE SINGAPOREANS!!!!

WHAT ABOUT THE DIGNITY OF YOU FELLOW SINGAPOREANS!!!!????....
We too have families and dependents to be considered....
with the average meagre salary we are are drawing versus MINISTERIAL PAY!!!??

Are these the kind of MPs who will be looking after us Singaporeans??
    • Alan  •  1 year 0 months ago
I wonder why MR. Lim Wee Kiak can be MP!! If he dare to say this during GE, I am sure another GRC will be lost to opposition.

Mr. Lim is not fit to be MP and serve Singaporean if he has such thinking.

Hey MP LIM, you are quite a naive chap. If this is the intellectual quality of the PAP MPs, the future of SIN is in trouble. I can't wait to listen to your comments and remarks and speeches in Parliament. In England, they say "God save the Queen". With you in Government, "God save Singapore"
