SDP’s manifesto dangerous: PAP’s De Souza

PAP candidate Christopher De Souza slammed SDP's proposal to raise the income tax for higher-wage earners. (Yahoo! photo/ Faris Mokhtar)PAP candidate Christopher De Souza slammed SDP's proposal to raise the income tax for higher-wage earners. (Yahoo! …

The People's Action Party's (PAP) Holland-Bukit Timah GRC candidate Christopher De Souza has called the Singapore Democratic Party's (SDP) manifesto proposals "dangerous".

In his rally speech to an estimated 2000-strong crowd for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and Bukit Panjang SMC on Monday evening, he said, "The SDP manifesto launched very late in the day is a rushed patchwork of ideas. Lose at its core, unviable in its implementation, dangerous to residents of Holland-Bukit Timah, across the board.

"There are disconnects within the manifesto, not minor ones (but) major ones, major consequences, dangerous," he added.

The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and lawyer took issue with SDP's proposal to increase personal income taxes to the 30 per cent mark for higher-income earners.

"Did you know that the SDP wants to raise personal income tax to about 30 per cent?" he said, with the crowd responding with boos.

De Souza argued that it would be unfair to tax higher-income earners, citing young families in his ward who not only live but invest in the private properties as a nest egg.

"Many of the new condominium dwellers are young families investing in a private property as a nest egg and SDP wants to raise personal income tax to about 30 per cent, not by a small margin but by a fairly large margin," he said.

He added that there is also a "disconnect" in wanting to increase income tax, supposedly to assist the poor as the SDP's proposal to divert the country's economy away from the manufacturing industry to a services sector would affect almost 500,000 blue-collar workers.

"The SDP wants to increase the tax of the higher wage earners which will seriously affect the financial planning of this group of my residents.

"But in the same breath, it also seeks to detrimentally affect the jobs of my blue-collar worker friends and residents who live in the HDB heartlands and they want to do so by dismantling Singapore's manufacturing sector," said De Souza.

His comments come after SDP's candidate Tan Jee Say proposed in his 46-page working paper titled 'Creating Jobs and Enterprises in a New Singapore Economy' that Singapore move away from the manufacturing sector to a "full-fledged integrated services hub for the region".

"Politics is about service, it's about applying heart and mind together. To assess, to understand, to deliberate what is in the best interests of our residents and Singaporeans. I consider it a scared duty.

"The last 5 years have not been easy, the MPs, my fellow MPs in this team have been on the frontline, witnessing, dealing, understanding, responding to the worst financial crisis since the great depression.

"We were on the ground, we were not giving speeches, rhetoric, high falutin ideas, no. We were banding together and overcoming one of the greatest economic obstacles the world has seen, and Singapore has seen," said De Souza.

PAP candidate Liang Eng Hwa also called on the SDP team to unveil their plans for the Holland-Bukti Timah GRC. (Yahoo! photo/ Faris Mokhtar)PAP candidate Liang Eng Hwa also called on the SDP team to unveil their plans for the Holland-Bukti Timah GRC. …

Meanwhile, his Holland-Bukit Timah GRC teammate Liang Eng Hwa also took a swipe at SDP, calling them to unveil plans for the constituency.

Speaking at the rally, he said, "When I entertain the thought that (the) SDP team assembled two days before Nomination Day, and who are not interested in communicating with you face to face at your doorstep to understand your concerns, is to run this place, how will this town be like?"

He also questioned whether the SDP team truly understands the sentiments and needs of the residents or are they using the constituency as a stepping stone "to make more noises in Parliament".

"If they get in, there are no local plans for this town, simply because they did not bother to find out your needs and they have anyway a different focus.

"This thought and these dreadful scenarios spur me to work very hard for this campaign because we owe it to our residents here, to build a better and secured home.

"It is our responsibility and I will fight every ounce of my energy that I have, to make sure that our homes are secured and getting better. We are the team that feels strongly and emotionally attached to this place and we really want to make a difference here," he said.

The PAP rally saw 13 speakers delivered their speeches including "new face" Sim Ann who is part of the party's Holland-Bukit Timah team and guest speaker, Minister of State for the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Mrs Yu Foo Yee Shoon, who will be retiring from politics.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan also addressed three key issues — costs of living, jobs and housing prices, and urged voters not to go for quick-fix solutions as proposed by the opposition parties.

      Dear PAP,

When will you ever learn? At every election, when other parties were not able to come out with alternative views, you said they were dangerous.

When they questioned your policies you called them dangerous or even still sued them for defamation. You portrayed them as irresponsible.

Today we have an economist in Reform Party, an economist in SDP a brilliant world class lawyer in Workers Party, and their views are dangerous too??

      What’s dangerous is;

      (i) It’s dangerous to keep you and your party with a majority in parliament.

(ii) Absolute Power like what PAP has, is dangerous.

(iii) The comments MM made about the Malay and Muslim Community is dangerous.

(iv) The government holding on to Billions of dollars in reserves and refusing to show the accounts is dangerous.

      (v) Singaporeans denied a fair election is dangerous. Your constant re drawing of boundary lines. a one hour nomination period, a 8 day rally period is unfairly dangerous.

(vi) Your abuse of the mass media to propagate your own agenda and vilify the opposition is dangerous

(vii) The threats made by the MM to residents of Aljunied GRC was dangerous.

(viii) The government N ot being able to connect with the people is dangerous

      What’s NOT dangerous is;
      (i) An alternative voice in parliament
      (ii) An alternative Idea
      (iii) A strong Opposition
      (iv) Accountability

      A MESSAGE TO THE GOVERNMET:

THE PEOPLE HAVE WOKEN UP. YOUR OPPONENTS IN THE OPPOSITION HAVE WOKEN UP.

ITS TIME THE GOVERNMENT WAKE'S UP.

Very very well said, Vote Singapore.....stuff it down their idiotic throat to prevent them from vomiting garbage. This de souza epitomises the MIW,s complete ignorance of the REAL and PRESENT ISSUES facing Spore today.

They can only continue to mouth their old boring and IRRELEVANT platitudes.

De Souza, you have a copy of PAP's manifesto and on Page 8, PAP is proposing to use 60 Billion to expand MRT while TJS is proposing 60 Billion to help Singaporeans. Which is better thought out and useful? Your manifesto is full of fancy pictures which made up a bulk of your 13 page manifesto. Is that what all you highly paid ministers can come up with? I am good a powerpoint presentation, you want me to do your manifesto? I can throw in animations for you if you like.

TSJ has specifically written to move the focus of manufacturing to service. It is not to do away with manufacturing. It seems like you want to keep on your manufacturing by expanding it so that you can bring in more foreigners; hence it will justify how you keep on harping that we need foreigners, that without them the company will not survive and hence loss of jobs to Singaporeans. With emerging markets coming up, do you think Singapore can compete with them? I thought your buzz word is Productivity? It surely has nothing to do with bringing more foreigners.
Perhaps PAP can put your pride down and seriously read what TJS is writing. Yours is easily read since it is in point forms. Perhaps you need SDP to summarize the article in point forms?

did they know how many zeroes are there in $60 billions? maybe got to ask Teo Chee Hean.
      • John Lim 1 year 0 months ago
$60Billion to built MRT ! After spent. They will get it back from the people who take MRT. Foriegners or Singaporean.

I want to ask this question. When building time. Who profit ? The Construction workers and engineers are mostly Foriegners leh !
      • . 1 year 0 months ago
Going into services sector is a no-brainer.

Singapore leaders keep harping on Singapore has no natural resources.
If we keep pushing for manufacturing, we are at a disadvantage when it comes to procuring raw materials. Because we are at the mercy of the price makers who sell these raw materials.

And services industry relies on people. - and that we have! Education! that we also have, we have more university graduates than we ever did. How in the world does PAP think that we should continue focusing on manufacturing is beyond me. In South East Asia, we are in a very advantageous position to capitalize on human capital and number of U grads compared to say Malaysia, Indonesa, Thailand, etc.

Let investors invest into building factories in these countries and let Singaporeans manage them (since they are Singapore companies). All the locals staying in Singapore to focus on knowledge work.

Haha,he is talking about himself. He is worried that he will have to pay higher income tax. The normal people like us are not affected only the elites. Now you see the PAP style...when they touch the people money it is not dangerous, when you touch their money...very dangerous.

Seriously, I wonder they themselves understand the sentiment of the people. Current sentiment of most Singaporeans are to get PAP out of the picture and to vote more opposition in. Too much autocratic rules from MIW for too long. Too much noise and false promises for too long. It is time to give back the power to the people.

Dear MIWs, before you lambast at other parties' manifesto, please look at your own:

      1. Why is yours for this GE filled with so many pictures but short on the specifics? We would expect much more concrete policies from a ruling party which has had access to vital government data over these years useful for you to devise future policies. I'm surprised that other parties, despite their lack of access to such data, had been able to try their best with whatever information they got from open sources to devise at least a basic policy which they tried to make it as detailed as possible. How about you MIWs?

      2. By the way, you MIWs had not fulfilled most if not all the things outlined in your 2006 Manifesto, so what makes you certain you can fulfill yours this time? And what gives you thre right to therefore question other parties' manifesto?

      3. With regard to taxation, if not tax the higher income earners, then are you MIWs gonna tax mroe of us the lower and middle income earners then? Again, this speaks so much of your disconnect with the ground. This is a country, Singapore, not some social elite club where you protect the elites as your only clients. The low and middle income groups make up the majority of Singaporeans so please, get your priorities right.

Dear Singaporean brothers and sisters, please remember to do the right thing on 7 May 2011, this saturday. Please do not let the money-grubbing MIWs continue to ride roughshod over our heads anymore!

i pay tax, if my tax is put to good use, 30% also can lah. it is ok, but if we give tax holidays to MNCs to set up shop here to create jobs for "residents " and not Singaporeans then we must think again.

let me tell you that to have an unchecked pap in parliament is the real danger !!!

how such a simple common sense escapes a smart man like you, puzzles me ! you loyalty is very misplaced. you need to be retired by the people !!!

there are two things that PAP keep harping on like an old broken record. that is, their track record and that the opposition never walk the ground.

i really hate it when people say this so and so did what so many years ago. so? i ran 2.4 km in less than 9 mins when i was young, now i can barely finish in 13 mins! PAP wants our vote, how should we evaluate them? simple, just based it on their work for the LAST 5 years.

hmm, what are the significant events that happened over the last 5 years?
      - raised GST after election was over
      - build 2 casinos
      - overspend on IOG
      - floods all over the island

so, they still dare to mention their track record? based on their track record over the last 5 years, ALL should be shipped out!

then, there's the u don't walk the ground, u won't understand the people's needs. how do u walk the ground, when the electoral department keeps re-zoning. today, i walk in clementi, thinking that it will be considered as bt timah GRC, next thing u know, they carve it out to west coast GRC. u anyhow change, how do u expect people to follow?

but this is not the funniest thing. PAP claim that opposition never walk the ground, but the people have said this many times, they too have never seen their MP before!

i think the opposition parties here have modest aims. they are hoping just to capture 1 GRC and may be a few SMC. i say, dream big, capture a few GRCs. these will not rock the aircraft carrier (PAP) but it will surely wake up the admiral!

only when the opposition scores big, will PAP really REPENT and REVAMP. the opposition has rejuvenated and found a new lease of life! now, it's time for PAP to do the same!

This D'Souza is the one who slammed Low Thia Kiang from Worker's party who wanted to reduce GST for basic items. He is only looking after the high income group.
Vote D'Souza and Vivian out. His team is the worst and most arrogant team of PAP.

    • ACCOUNTABILITY!  •  1 year 0 months ago
Christopher De Souza has called the Singapore Democratic Party's (SDP) manifesto proposals "dangerous".

Isn't PAP manifesto even worst! At least i believe SDP manifesto will be fought and put into action if they won the seat they deserve into the parliament! and they can Edit their manifesto for the better and not the worst!

HOWEVER PAP manifesto will eventually have some NEW edition and as a result we, the citizens of Singapore, pledge our self to be slaves of PAP, to Pay and Pay again for the next 5years!
And we can see those MPs becoming YES man again to LHL policies without putting up a thoroughly discussion and fight! One good example of of majority YES MAN is the setting up of casinos in Singapore!

We need accountability and checks in the government. 32 seats for oppositions will be favorably to prevent any undesired bills to be passed!

      Come May 7th, vote wisely!
    • I dunno what to say  •  1 year 0 months ago
We know it all about being in danger. We have gone through the last five years going through it. Our jobs are in danger, our family are in danger and our lives are in dangers with all the policies you have made for us. We know what danger is Mister. You think we Singaporeans are all greedy and stupid like what you want to think? Well, with this election, all thinks to the internet, we are able to rebutt word for word for the things you said and we didn't need to Oppositions to just tell you that. Yesterday, Goh CT even told LTK to accept the post of NCMP when election results have yet to be known? Aren't you too presumptions Goh CT? Why do we ask the PAPs members this? Do you accept the role of NCMP?

So how do you like competitions now? When Singaporeans asked you to give them the right to jobs, you told them that competition is good. You often said that competition helps us to get better and it brings in more new ideas, it make us better, faster, and cheaper. But then this is not to be so for yourself.

Why a load of baloney. How is it that you constantly think that we are so stupid and greedy like you?The reason we want Oppositions be voted in so as to stop you from shoving policies after policies down out throats when we told you that we don't want them. You have told us that you are deaf to your ears.

We don't want you to keep telling us what is good for us only. So, for one second, use better argument to win us over instead of the same old story. You are sounding like a broken record because we heard them all already for the last five years.

I am so glad that Ms Ho Soak Harn from RP, spoke out for singles trying to own their own HDB flat. For years my sister was working in the government sector. Few years back when property prices was still affordable to her, she wanted to buy but could not due to the minimum age requirement of 35. Now that she has reach 35, she still cannot buy because HDB prices has sky rocketed.

PAP please tell me how and why you came up with such screw up policies? You really screw up BIG TIME! Has she contributed any less to Singapore than anyone of us? Can you blame her bitterness, not to mention the many more singles in the same situation as her. Has it ever cross your mind that, if singles can settle down and have their own homes earlier in life, it will create a conducive environment that they might want to get married, and maybe make more babies?

Incidentally, she has now left the government sector. I asked her why? she repiled because her pay was so miserable that she cannot keep up with inflation and property prices. Luckily for her, she came out on her own and is making much more than she used to. By the way, she has a Master Degree, and if she cannot cope with the high cost of living, I dread to think what our low income Singporean must be facing. So I can only derive that not all government jobs pay well, except for those at the Top End of the ladder!

PS. I wanted to ask my sister one more question, who will she vote come Polling Day? On second thought I didn't, what a redundant question! I guess all you readers out there already know the answer.

So far the NEW PAP CANDIDATE USES PAP PAST TRACK RECORD, WE WANT TO KNOW YOUR PERSONAL TRACK RECORD. WHAT HAPPEN WHEN YOU MAKE THE WRONG POLICIES ? AS FAR AS I AM CONCERN, THE OPPOSITION CANDIDATE IS AS GOOD AS THE NEW PAP CANDIDATE, IF NOT BETTER.

HOW MUCH GIC AND TEMASEK LOST ? NO BODY KNOW EXCEPT PAP. DR VIV SAYS MONIES IS NOT LOST AND IT'S RECOVERED. DO SINGAPOREANS KNOW ? DID PAP OPEN THE BOOKS FOR US TO INSPECT ? WHERE AND HOW IS THE MONEY FLOW ? WAS IT AUDITED ? DID THE OPPOSITION INSPECT AND INVESTIGATE THE ACCOUNTS ?

ANSWER: NO. WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY ? CAN YOU TRUST PAP ?

MAYBE THERE IS NO MONEY ? HOW MUCH IS PAID OUT FOR CEO,CHAIRMAN AND PM LEE WIFE ?? WE DON'T KNOW.

But will SDP become the next gov? I guess not and I am sure not becoz only 11 candidates in this GE.
Whatever proposal and policy that is not good for the people the majority can always vote to deny in the parliament and for the good one can vote for approval right?

While the GROW and SHARE package seems to benefit the poor and middle class, they actually serve to help the higher income earners as well as they will get $2,000+ interms of tax rebates. So the rich again have benefitted more vs the poor who have onyl got up to around $1,000 for most in the really poor. This is dangerous as we continue to make the rich richer and poor poorer with these handouts just before elections to win votes and then taxed them both rich and poor at a flat GTS rate of 10%. While the poor use 100% of their income while the rich just a small percentage and gets reduction in personal income taxes resulting on many thousands of dollars saved by them in terms of personal income taxes.

If he /they can escape the Long Arms of the Laws can I assume that this applies to all Ministers or perhaps those Civil Servants if so will this extend to we the citizens of Sgp?

Your white has been stained to black, so look at yourself 1st before calling others black (dangerous).

No wisdom, still use 30yrs old outdated smear and intimidating tactics ..... even oppositions know how to update themselves with new strategies and PAP that "packed with talented" people still using such a low level method.

For people not vote in alternative voices and allow to PAP to do as it wished is DANGEROUS! We already had firsthand experience on what can happen in 5 years. Singapore flooded with foreigner fighting for jobs and infrastructure like transport, food courts, banks, clinics the list goes on and on. Ever rising GST, PUB, Petrol, Education, Transport, Medical and again the list goes on and on. Tell us MR. DE SOUZA why should we believe you now better still why should we listen to you.... were you voted in with the mandate of the people yet?
    • Martians want peace, dont ...  •  1 year 0 months ago
If it is dangerous for the higher income grp because according to Mr De Souza, they "not only live but invest in the private properties as a nest egg" (his own words), can you imagine the real dangerous impact on the middle & lower income grp when GST is raised, transport is raised, utilities is raised, even a roof over their head is raised (many folds). Will Mr De Souza slam the PM & FM when these are raised? And why not?
