Singapore has been officially divided into 15 "towns" each with its own town council, according to a list released by the Ministry of National Development on Friday.

Sembawang-Nee Soon is the biggest town and its council will be looking after two five-member group representation constituencies (GRCs), while Potong Pasir town is the smallest.

According to The Straits Times, eight of the 15 town councils have new chairmen as their predecessors have either retired, taken on new responsibilities or lost in the recent polls.

The changes include the replacement of Cynthia Phua of the ruling People's Action Party as chairman of the new Aljunied-Hougang council by Sylvia Lim of the Workers' Party after the latter's team won in the Aljunied GRC in the recent General Election.

The town councils take charge of the cleanliness and maintenance, including lift upgrading, of HDB estates.

In a statement, the ministry said that the new town of Moulmein-Kallang has been formed, while Jalan Besar Town Council has been dissolved, with its operations largely handed over to the newly established Moulmein-Kallang Town Council.

Eleven other town councils have been reconstituted as some areas under their purview have become part of other towns, with the change in electoral boundaries. The management of these areas will be transferred to the reconstituted town councils with effect from 1 August 2011, the ministry said.

The list of constituencies served by the 15 town councils can be found here.
