Some Singaporeans took to Holland Village on Saturday purposefully dressed in singlets, shorts and slippers in response to an on-air rant about "uncultured" heartlanders in Holland Village.

A group of seven proudly held up signs reading, "I love the heartlands", reported The New Paper.

All in all, some 100 people turned up to show support for '1,000 peeps to Holland V in Singlets, Shorts and Slippers Day'.

Event organiser Gerald Tok, 31, said he wanted to "get people thinking about Singapore as a society and as a civil society".

The event was organised on social networking site Facebook in response to "Samantha" who had phoned in to 91.3 FM last month complaining that "uncultured" heartlanders wearing shorts and slippers should stay away from Holland Village.

She has since apologised for her comments.

"As a country, I think, we need to recognise when our views become divisive rather than inclusive," Tok told The Sunday Times, pointing out that underlying issues of social barriers have to be addressed.

The game developer said he was happy people supported the event. This is even though only about 100 of the 2,700 people who signed up online for it turned up.

It was also unclear if those who wore singlets, shorts and slippers were specifically there for the event.

Civil servant Jay Liu, 22, who was there for the event, said,"This is us being So Singaporean (referring to Twitter hashtage So Singaporean). There's nothing wrong with us dressing like this."

Some, however, wrote on the event's Facebook page that they were disappointed so few people turned up.
