Thousands of people descended on the Borders bookstore clearance sale on Friday as they sought to get the best book deals.

By 10 am, a queue had formed before the doors to Singapore Expo Hall 4 had opened, reported The Straits Times.

Some came with trolleys, some had taken the day off to be among the first to look through the 60,000 books at half-price. Others such as business consultant Richard Lim, 40, simply wanted to bid farewell to the familiar bookstore.

Mohamad Fahmy Ismail, 45, arrived at 9.30 am and after waiting three hours to pay for his books, went home a happy shopper with 15 books purchased at half-off.

Book retailer M N Islam, 45, told the paper he would sell some of the 60 books he bought but will keep 80 per cent of it for himself.

The flagship Borders store at Wheelock closed suddenly on 16 August following a rental dispute with its landlord Wheelock Properties.

Interim judicial manager Tim Reid told the paper the Wheelock store's stock was being sold in hope of recovering enough to pay for the rental of Expo hall and for the running of the Parkway Parade outlet.

The rest will go to creditors in the liquidation process.

Borders is also in talks with parties keen on buying the Parkway Parade outlet.

The Borders sale is on until Tuesday.
