WP can take over Aljunied Town Council offices: HDB

    UPDATED

The Workers' Party Member of Parliament elects will be able to take over the current office leases of the Aljunied Town Council, the HDB said on Friday.

In a statement sent to the mainstream media, HDB said the three offices, each on a three-year lease, have been rented to the Aljunied Town Council and the new MPs will take on all existing agreements of the Aljunied Town Council.

The HDB met with the five elected MPs for Aljunied GRC on Tuesday at their request and discussed with them the procedures for the handover of the town council.

Following the party's victory in Aljunied GRC, WP chief Low Thia Khiang said he hoped to be able to take over the present offices instead of having to build a new town council building.

In 1991, when he was elected in the Hougang single-seat ward, he had to scramble to build a new town council office in 45 days because he was unable to take over the one used by the People's Action Party.

However, the HDB clarified on Friday that the Hougang Town Council office was located in Punggol SMC, which was subsumed by Cheng San GRC following the 1991 GE.

The HDB then gave approval for a new office to be built at Hougang Avenue 2, within the boundary of Hougang SMC.

Earlier this week, the WP said it had decided which Aljunied GRC ward each of its elected MPs will take charge of.

According to The Straits Times, Low will take charge of the Bedok Reservoir-Punggol ward, which was under Foreign Minister George Yeo.

WP chairman Sylvia Lim will take over the Serangoon ward from Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Hwee Hua, while corporate lawyer Chen Show Mao will take on Cynthia Phua's Paya Lebar ward.

Postgraduate law student Pritam Singh will takeover Senior Minister of State (Foreign Affairs) Zainul Abidin Rasheed's Eunos ward while family counsellor Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap will replace the People's Action Party's first-time candidate Ong Ye Kung at Kaki Bukit.

Look at the stupility of the GRC system - Bedok Reservoir-Punggol ward, Serangoon ward, Paya Lebar ward, Eunos ward, Kaki Bukit Ward - non of which is Aljunied, but it is called the Aljunied GRC. How stupid can it get? Guess the PAP will do anything to win.

You are right. When come to such thing, naming the GRC, they are really clueless.
The native Aljuniedites are in separate constituency.... It is divide and rule strate---- of the colonialists of years gone by.

On the last evening of the last week's campaigning, as I was leaving the Serangoon Stadium after the Workers Party's rally, I saw one lady diligently picking up as much litter as she could. And as she was doing it, she said in Mandarin to thse around, "Let's keep the place clean. We must all work together to help Workers Party. We must show to the rest of Singapore that it's a good party"

I, too, started collecting rubbish as I walked along to the gate.

It's OUR effort, Aljunied-ians to work together to make our dream come true. We cannot abandon the candidates whom we voted in and expect them to do it on their own. They too have sacrificed much to make Singapore a better place for all.

Together, we will and we can!

Please do "upgrading" very differently from the PAP. The best villages do not tear and built ever so often. They improve, redesign, layer on and capture the best of the best for preservation. A la Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge, the masterminds kept the place but maintain and improve. Please look after the community spirit, the graciousness and cleanliness of the place, and with jobs and improve services, Aljunied will be best place to live in Singapore.

I hope Mr. Low TK and his team can air this TO-DO list in their parliamentary meetings:

      1. Jobs and job security, with promotions with seniority. Job satisfaction.

      2. Income and income security, salary increases ahead of inflation.

      3. Affordable homes and home ownership. Insurance against fire, theft AS WELL AS DISASTER, etc. Think of what happened in Japan at Fukushima Prefecture. Unexpected, unplanned and unresolved at the moment.

      4. Health and health insurance covering 100% of medical expenses at the hospitals – private or public according to choice. CPF medisave, medishield insurance wholly inadequate. Safeguards against over-consumption.

      5. Private car ownership not vital but maybe essential due to taking care of older folks and/or invalid members of the family. Relook at system of Certificate of Entitlements. To include to relook at ERP gantries at the effectiveness thereof. This unnecessarily adds to HIGHER COST of living and unnecessary stress. Address the RIGHT issues. Find effective remedies to the PROBLEMS instead of dealing with SYMPTOMS. In this case the traffic jams are the symptoms. The problem is too many vehicles, perhaps? The concentration of businesses and/ or entertainment in ONE LOCATION, perhaps? Solve the PROBLEMS not the symptoms.

      6. Home improvements including estate renewals, lifts on every floor, close by markets, essential facilities like playgrounds, exercise areas for elderly persons and those recuperating from various injuries, ----ms for those ask for it. Within district shopping malls and entertainment centres.

      7. Infrastructure development. Developments that support job creation at DISTRICT level rather than commuting over LONG distances. Create zones for SUITABLE factories and industries, warehouses, offices buildings (FIWO clusters) NEAR population centers. Transport system to be revamped to cater to increasing demands to and from these cluster zones. There are available demographic information and planned and/or existing residential zones. Integrate those plans with the FIWO cluster zones concept. To be factored in also are sufficient areas for full service heavy vehicles parking space complete with amenities and shopping places near the FIWO cluster zones. Current heavy vehicles parking space with amenities are woefully absent or nonexistent. A good model to use is the Bukit Batok Road/ PIE heavy vehicle park.

      8. Ensure that native Singaporeans are taken care and that the sense of belonging to this land and country is not threatened by UNNECESSARY influx of FTs/FWs. Unless the TYPE of work is absolutely shunned by the native Singaporeans then we can bring in sufficient numbers to provide manpower for what is required but with limited work permit duration. The education system must be revamped to MEET WITH the demands of various SERVICE and other types of industries. Produce in excess numbers would be better than having a shortfall of qualified personnel to meet with INDUSTRY demands. Employers are to be reminded to be generous to fellow Singaporeans as regards pay and benefits. A happy and alert employee is a PRODUCTIVE employee.

      9. Be humble of your achievements. Downplay self. And thank the people for giving you the opportunity to prove yourself and your team and your combined capabilities. That is the spirit we want to engender in our young and for the generations of Singaporeans to come. Make ALJUNIED the model GRC (hopefully in future we have all SMCs to level the playing field) for alternative parties to learn to manage and to emulate when they contest in the next GE. Nothing to repent for. But rejoice!

That is a very long list. If Mr. Low manage to secure 1 from item 1 to item 4, it is already a very well done job for the next 5 years. Not forgetting that the ruling party are full of very stubborn rulers that will never give way easily.

Promotions cannot be based on seniority alone, it is based on meritocracy, on whether between the choice of 2 equally qualified person, one less senior and one more senior, who can better contribute or deemed more suitable in the role.

WP will not be able to fulfil item 1. It goes against their principle. NCMP seat offered to Gerald instead of Eric. Eric is the senior one, but not offered despite all hard work and the years given to WP. Why, u may ask? Cause WP wants someone who can relate to us(gen y) and win our votes.

So in the greater interest of the party, Eric has to be 'sacrificed'.

If you are really keen and have the ability, go volunteer and behave well in Ajunied and make sure WP is fully entrenched! Then PAP will soon get to know what is good service in Ajunied and share best practices throughout Singapore. This is how we can make our lives better by the day instead of waiting for the next 5 years!!! Cos words will spread about the Ajunied great service and PAP will be put under daily pressure!!!

My last posting for the GE 2011.

      PAP
Firstly, the PAP has to renew and reform itself. It has to show the people that they are not only listeners but also doers. And must be seen to be doing so. Serve with a heart, govern with a firm hand. No need to fear the backlash of a few opportunists if you are doing it right.

      WP
The WP has to show that they can do the same if not better than the PAP. It has to prove that they can measure up to the residents expectations. Since they have presented a set of credible candidates it;s time to show your plans and proposals for the residents and the rest of Singaporeans. It is no good to just follow-up on what the PAP has done and add on to their policies or plans. We can see that. You need to show us you can stand on your own and proposed solid plans and policies. It's no use keeping the town clean and rubbish cleared. Any MNC can do that. Politics is not about keeping the estate clean only. It goes beyond shouting and screaming at the top of your voices at rallies. It is about who can present the best proposals/plans/policies to increase and provide the best quality of life for the people.

All of us Singaporeans are keeping check on you as well as the PAP to see whether you guys have fulfilled what you promise to do. If not the next election we tell you Adios, PAP or WP. It makes no difference to us. We are after all Singaporeans.

      Good luck.

I am so happy for the Workers' Party for winning the Aljunied GRC. I wish Mr Low, Mr Faizal, Mr Pritam, Mr Chen and Miss Lim continuous unity in truth, compassion and joy with the residents of Aljunied. It is especially heartening to hear in Mr Low's winning speech that "we want a home and not just economic success". Singapore, starts right from lovely Aljunied from this day forth shall be filled with honest, hardworking, joyous, compassionate and blessed residents. Be blessed, stay blessed as you witness a first world parliament with a confident capable team of leaders.:)

      Article by Ann Maria

The following comments by Cubicle appeared to have been removed:

I think it'll be difficult to change cause the problem lays deep. When the ministers think it's perfectly fine to tell the Citizens to tighten their belts and sacrifice to contribute to GDP growth, then reward themselves for this growth, the problem is deeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

When these ministers think welfare is a dirty word, yet see no harm in keeping their pensions of 2/3s their highest drawn salary even after raising their pay to the multi-millions and taking large bonuses, mooting the whole arguement that "we sacrifice for the country, so the country looks after us" (side note: isn't that true for us all too?).

Now lets just look at this simple example here - pensions. For the rest of us, pensions gave way to CPF. This CPF payout date too has been raised how many times now? From 55 to what is it now? 65?

Yet do you know our dear ministers still get their pensions from 55 onwards, on TOP of their pay?

They see no harm nor wrong in this now do they?

They see no wrong in holding back our CPF, giving us a lower interest rate than inflation. They see no wrong wiping out this CPF too with over priced government housing. They will argue "market prices" ignoring the fact that they control the influx of people here, control legistlation for foreign ownership, own more than 80% of the land and therefore ARE the market.

They see no wrong that HDB is government housing built on stateland that they acquired, using the land acquisition act, cheaply (I read $1.00 per square foot in some cases) for the purpose of housing the Citizens. Now they lease it back to us at hundreds per sqft x 20 (for a twenty storey block)... yet the title deed never changes hands. It's a lease, on we also have to pay property tax on.

They see no problem that our retirement fund is being funneled into their reserves and we can't even dream of retiring.

See my point yet? The government sees no wrong turning the Citizens into cash cows for their "reserves", which they also tell us is huge, therefore they are a great government worth more than the millions they take for themselves.

The problem is so extremely deep when a government sees no problem using the blood and lives of it's Citizens to paint a beautiful picture which they will then use to improve their own bank balances with.

How do you make changes to that, except to remove them all and replace them?

This current government does everything they can to ensure this system of checks and balances isn't there, they have no transparency nor accountability, they build the corruption into their system and keep harping about how good and clean they are.

Honestly though, I think on many levels, they actually believe that they are clean and good and honest. That they are making us sacrifice, made themselves multi-millionaires and are working towards making themselves billionaires "for our good"... Maybe they do believe that on many levels. That in fact though is the danger with the current government and why they can not change.

They do not see anything wrong with what they are doing, they just need to, "Communicate it better to us".

I am one of those sympathetic to opposition cause. Because I believe that only when we have good opposition , we get good government. Otherwise the government of the day tend to get complacent or take things for granted. I am not for the hard hit , combative culture we see in Taiwan and in few other countries. Opposition has to be combative when need arise. If compliant culture is what we want , then the opposition may collude with the government and cheat the people. We have to strike a balance and I know it is not easy to arrive. But there is no other choice. We cannot have absolute power to government nor a free for all aggressive opposition. So we must create our own political mix. I think we can because we have our own style of food and culture so we can have the same in politics. Maybe I am naive but all dreams start that way. so why Singapore cannot have it's own unique political culture?

WP - please look at your west side. I noticed that WP has slowly withdrawn to East because of success in Potong pasir and Hougang. There are decent level of support in the West side as well. Remember Anson is your historic landmark which is midway between both side.
