‘Kancheong Style’ shows off moves of S’porean kids
You've heard of "Gangnam Style", but what about "Kancheong Style"?
Yes, yet another parody of the well-known South Korean song has popped up — and this time it features Singaporean kids making light of the "kancheong" culture in Singapore. "Kancheong" is a local slang for anxiousness or uptightness.
The tongue-in-cheek lyrics are liberally infused with Singlish. One verse goes: "Run like a Siao Gila, heng ah I reach school on time ah. Teacher look at me macam just commit a crime lah. Walking like some hero. Oh no forgot my homework. Mummy, Daddy sure scold me 'cos all test I got zero!"
The 4-minute video, produced by family magazine The Asian Parent to celebrate Children's Day on 5 October, has since gone viral — reaching over 120,000 views on YouTube since it was posted last week.
It has even gotten the notice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin, who have both featured the song on their Facebook walls.
Lee wrote that while he "enjoyed" the Singaporean parody, he urged parents "not to be so kancheong, and to let our kids have their childhood".
When contacted by Yahoo! Singapore, Vania Tan, client relationship manager of The Asian Parent, said that they have received an outpouring of positive feedback from the public.
"We're also very honoured [on PM Lee's feature], because [this shows that] he understands the struggles of the ordinary citizen and reality in Singapore," she said.
Delving into the logistics of the music video, Tan told Yahoo! Singapore that The Asian Parent did not have a budget for the video, and all lyrics were written in-house.
The production, which was over a span of two weeks, started when the magazine opened a casting call on Facebook for kids to be featured in a music video. The response was overwhelming — as The Asian Parent received over 100 audition videos from parents.
