The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) is reportedly considering structured fitness training for National Service pre-enlistees who fail to achieve a silver standard for their National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) a year before enlistment. This was mentioned by the Second Minister for Defence, Chan Chun Sing, who was speaking to the press on Monday after chairing the fourth “Support for NS” Working Group meeting at Paya Lebar Air Base.

Tornadoes tore through the US on Sunday flattening the city of Washington, Illinois, and communities throughout the central part of the state. The fast moving storm had killed at least five and caused two major airports to stop operations briefly while the metropolitan area was under tornado watch. A National Weather Service survey team confirmed that the winds were blowing from 267 to 322 km per hour.

Russia sought answers on Monday for a plane crash that killed 50 people and raised fresh alarm about the safety of its civil aviation, with investigators focusing on a fault with the 23-year old plane or pilot error as the likely cause. The Tatarstan Airlines' Boeing 737-500 crashed on landing at the airport in the Volga city of Kazan after a flight from Moscow’s Domodedovo airport Sunday night, killing all 44 passengers and six crew on board, the emergencies ministry said.

At least 26 people were killed in Egypt when a train ploughed into a truck and a mini-bus at a railway crossing early Monday, the health ministry said. Another 28 people were injured in the accident, which happened south of Cairo. Local police chief told state television the mini-bus had been carrying guests home from a wedding. The head of the Egyptian Railway Authority said the drivers of the vehicles had ignored warning lights and chains blocking entry to the crossing, and tried to go across the tracks.
