    Murdoch praises Singapore’s ministerial pay

While facing a grilling by the UK parliament on Tuesday, media tycoon Rupert Murdoch praised Singapore as a model country, saying it is temptation-free because of its high ministerial pay, indirectly suggesting that UK ministers should be paid as much to prevent corruption.

The 80-year-old CEO of News Corp said that "the most open and clear society in the world is Singapore -- the cleanest society you can find anywhere -- as every minister is paid at least one million dollars a year and has no temptation to transgress".

Murdoch was speaking at a hearing into the phone hacking scandal of his group's News of the World tabloid.

Murdoch's intriguing statement brought about negative responses from the parliament. "Good luck in selling that one," the furious MP Damian Collins replied. The entire parliament even laughed in mockery.

Singaporeans reacted to his comment in dismay, too.

Speaking to Yahoo! Singapore, 33-year-old business manager Benson Ang was appalled by Murdoch's remark. "Did I just hear that right? While higher salaries might reduce corruption, it will create much unhappiness and resentment among the taxpayers towards the government, which will bring about more problems than solutions, just like Singapore's case," he claimed.

In a lighter stance, Janson Choo agrees with Murdoch but points out that some Singapore ministers lack certain qualities to run the country. "To be fair our ministers are definitely non-corrupted, but some are probably incompetent," he said on Facebook.

David Cameron, the Prime Minister of UK, currently draws an annual salary of £142,000 (S$279,000) while Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong takes in S$3.87 million every year.

Is there a linear relationship between the high ministerial pay and the low level of political corruption?

Rewarding its government ministers with huge wages has been a controversial topic in recent years, particularly during the recent General Election, which then prompted a review of ministers' salaries.

According to former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, the high ministerial salary helps maintain a clean and honest government, as well as attract and retain local talent. In the Corruption Perceptions Index 2010 by global civil society organisation Transparency International, Singapore came in first, alongside Denmark and New Zealand.

What Murdoch is saying is to factor bribery and corruption into the salary and pay millions. By doing this there will not be a corrupt person. Why? 'Coz the exhorbitant salary is more than they can ask for. But the next level to greed is POWER.

BTW what has happened to our Singapore Ministers salary review.........no news? Maybe they want to keep it quiet like TPL matter. I wonder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They do not want to release salary review until after the PE, so that citizens would not vent their frustration at the ballot box. Nice strate----

Does paying millions to the CEOs under you save you from being grilled by the UK parliament? I would argue that the millions paid to them are the cause of the moral decay in your company... Bring back their first love of journalism and ;you can then meet the aspiration you claimed you want for your company...

Fuxxx then my boss need to give me a raise IMMEDIATELY to prevent corruption

I feel that corruption is an old word to use, it is no longer about accepting bribes. Present days it is about benefiting or enriching family or relatives of the minister legally. Maybe unethical is the choice of word to use.

This implies that our ministers are well-paid NOT because they can perform but just so to prevent corruption. Well said Mr Murdoch.

Yeah, the British are making fun of Singapore. Mr Lee and Co., I hope you are happy with your paycheque.

To me, prevent corruption by having a firm and strict law for treason and corruption. Why must you use money? Isn't that what the police is for? To track down corrupted officials and to serve the people and ensure their safety? Or are you saying that the police are your lapdogs?

PAP, answer me. Are you working for yourself or for Singapore?

This old man Murky better mind his own business. Like he doesn't have enough problems of his own he wants to add to the ire of Singaporeans.

Let me put it this way - it takes a corrupted person to know and recognize another corrupted person. They play the same games. That is what the PAP govt is doing - playing dirty and corrupted to the max under the guise of a clean government.

Murky knows this because he has to play their games. Maybe he is bringing this up becasue why should he go down alone. Maybe its time he exposes the biggest fake squeaky clean govt. in the world.

Getting high pay to be "yes"en/women is a form of corruption.
Getting discount from purchasing is also a form of corruption.
Singaporeans are not stupid, we choose to keep quiet, unlike middle eastern countries.
Meanwhile are we talking about the old guards PAP ministers, like Toh Chin Chye, Goh Keng Swee, etc, etc, they are prone to corruption, Whether high pay or low pay, if you are corrupt, you will be corrupt, directly with cash or otherwise. If you are not corrupt, you will not accept corruption.

In my religion, if you are corrupt, you will repay somehow, or someway, either by you or your families in moany forms as you have done damage to others. It is up to one to believe this. A person will not cry if one did not see own coffin.

Question: Do the Ministers in Denmark and New Zealand get such "Exorbitant" salaries for keeping up their Govt. clean?
    • Steve  •  10 months ago
if that's the reason for pay raise i guess work supervisors and above must be given higher salaries too so that they wont be corrupt and accept half axx standards by their contractors i.e. surveyors, managers, site quality assurance personnel, health inspectors, well the list is long. How can or not? we got pay ceiling but no pay ground level so lets have that at least can? we support for the ministers' too no problem. If its a standard then everywhere in all sectors must also standardize. at least balance the in with the out and lead a balanced work-life too.

This old man is no angel. Just ask any American liberals, they will tell you the news network (Fox News) own by Rupert Murdoch is pure evil. They have been spreading lies and manipulating voters.
    • Alexander S  •  10 months ago
I dare any minister to be corrupt with or without million dollar salary -- if you are caught, remember former minister Teh Cheang Wan. Either you hang yourself or we hang you.

Singapore is indeed a place for the rich and famous. The elites will somehow speak for the elites because they scratch each others back to further enrich themselves. While the average and below citizen will continue to lag behind.

It's good that Mudoch cites our ministerial pay. This will draw more attention worldwide be it good or bad. The pay is way way above the per capita. To be more thorough if someone will to dig in then they will find that probably 60% below per capita and the 40% also on poverty line. The measurement has to be done in line with our "swiss(switch)standard of living" ok?

If you are sitting on a piles of billion, even you fart people also say it smells like perfume. That's the hard truth.

How dumb can Rupert Murdoch get? Who does not love money? The more the merrier! The fact that our Ministers are drawing multi million salaries does not imply that they will not fall into corruption! Look at Durai and how much he earns..even though its not as high as the ministers and consideredf " peanuts" by some lady, he still falls into corruption! He wants the UK citizens to suffer like us?? Pay and pay and get crap and rubbish services in return?
    • Dave  •  10 months ago
I think Singaporean don't mind paying $m but it must be value for money. If not for GE2011 being a wake call for the PAP housing, transport, education and cost of living will not improve but deteriorate cos the ministers' thoughts of affordablity is according to their 'atas' standards and not man-in-street. There is also a reduction in the number of ministers, LKY, GCT and some co-ordinating ministers. This will be a huge reduction in salaries and costs. It makes PM LHL looks a "WONG AH MA'" needing so many helpers. Those co-ordinating ministers suddenly can be dispense off after the GE. So you see how bloated the Government had become. Currently, some of the PAP ministers and MPs haven't shaken off their 'atas' and discriminating attitude of for and against us. They should have compassion and work for the common good of all Singaporeans.
