A rare half-zebra half-donkey or 'donkra' is the latest addition to a wildlife park in south east China.

The newborn of a female zebra and male donkey was welcomed into the world at theXiamen Haicang Safari Park and has already been attracting a lot of attention from visitors.

The cute cross-breed — just the fourth of his kind ever reported to have been born — has four black-and-white-striped legs just like a zebra, with the rest of its brown body bearing a resemblance to a donkey.

Zookeeper Lin Qiaoyong reportedly said that the foal nearly died during its delivery by asphyxiation after choking on its mother's amniotic fluid.

According to the zoo, the mother zebra mated naturally with the male donkey after the two were left together in the same enclosure.

Professor Wang Yiquan from Xiamen University told Xiamen Daily that donkeys and zebras are different species, which means while they might have enough in common to produce offspring, these will not be able to breed themselves.
