'Ghosts' make a mess of squeaky clean Singapore
For one month every year, Singapore takes a hiatus from its reputation as a squeaky clean city to feed the hungry ghosts during the annual Chinese festival.
During Hungry Ghost Month, the seventh month on the Chinese lunar calendar, the gates of hell open, allowing the ancestors' ghosts wander the earth, according to Chinese tradition. The ghosts are either honored or appeased -- depending upon their character -- with offerings of food, incense and the burning of paper effigies of money or other gifts.

Singapore Dollar’s Losses to Ringgit Seen Widening: Asean Credit
The diverging economic fortunes of two Southeast Asian neighbors are prompting PineBridge Investments to favor Malaysia’s ringgit over Singapore’s dollar.
The ringgit has gained 4 percent to 2.53 per Singapore dollar since reaching a 16-year low of 2.63 in February, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Malaysia’s five-year government bonds offer investors a yield almost three times that available on the city-state’s similar debt after Zeti Akhtar Aziz became Southeast Asia’s first central bank governor to raise borrowing costs this year.

I do it for my family: Singapore’s first UFC fighter Royston Wee
He may have made history on the global stage, but Royston Wee isn't allowing any room for complacency.
The professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter is too driven; too focused on pushing himself further and harder on the trail he blazes as Singapore’s first-ever entry on global MMA stage Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Despite already sealing his place in the record books with a victorious debut on home soil in January, Wee continues to plug away at his craft, for one purpose above all.
Police, protesters collide again in Ferguson
The National Guard arrived in Ferguson but kept its distance from the streets where protesters clashed again with police, as clouds of tear gas and smoke hung over the St. Louis suburb where Michael Brown was fatally shot by a police officer.
Protesters filled the streets after nightfall Monday, and officers trying to enforce tighter restrictions at times used bullhorns to order them to disperse. Police deployed noisemakers and armored vehicles to push demonstrators back. Officers fired tear gas and flash grenades.

Israelis, Palestinians resume talks on Gaza deal
Palestinian and Israeli negotiators in Cairo resumed indirect talks on Tuesday, trying to hammer out a roadmap for the war-torn Gaza Strip after Egypt announced a 24-hour extension of the cease-fire to allow more time for negotiations.
The extension of the truce fanned hopes of an emerging deal, however vague, though wide gaps remain on key issues, including Israel's blockade of Gaza, its demands for disarmament of the Islamic militant group Hamas and Palestinian demands for a Gaza seaport and an airport.
