A bright idea for bike safety and rider fitness

The brainchild of Brazilian company Nastek Tecnologia, the Yon Bike Lamp is a bicycle tail light with a built-in GPS tracker so that other road users will always be able to see you and you'll always be able to see where you've been.

As functional as it is robust, the Yon Bike Lamp can be accessed via a web browser or smartphone app to check on the bike's location and to go over statistics.

How far has the bike traveled, where and at what speed? And of course, it has a suite of fitness and motion monitoring features and can even work out how many calories the rider has been burning off.

As well as tracking movement, a built-in accelerometer knows when the bike is at rest and will automatically shut down the light to preserve battery life.

And when it isn't counting calories or reporting the bike's whereabouts, the device is also a normal, water-resistant tail light that offers no outward clues of its high-tech innards.

"The shift towards sustainability of the past few years has caused a lot of people to choose bicycles as a transport alternative leading to strong market growth," said Lauro Cruz, Nastek Director of Technology. "However, as bicycles rise in popularity, so does theft. The need for solutions in response to demand from bicycle riders motivated Nastek to develop a product that is a security tracking device with the added value of a taillight and a fitness monitor."

Although officially announced this week, Nastek Tecnologia is yet to confirm the product's pricing or availability beyond Brazil.
