Capitol Theatre reopens this 19 May

13 May – 17 years after it last opened its doors to the public in 1998, the historic Capitol Theatre will finally be reopening this 19 May.

"Singapura: The Musical", which tells 10 pivotal years of Singapore's history, is set to be the iconic theatre's opening act, according to The Straits Times.

The refurbished theatre is touted as South-east Asia's largest single screen cinema.

With approximately 900 seats, it is built for events such as red carpet movie premieres and first run screenings. It will also host in-house theatre and dance productions, making this Singapore's only dual-purpose theatre.

The theatre was first opened in 1930, built by Persian businessman M.A. Namazie. From 1946, it became the flagship cinema of the Shaw Organisation.

Namazie also built the Capitol Building next to it, finished in 1933. The two historic buildings, along with The Stamford House which was built in 1904, are part of the new Capitol Singapore. Capitol Building and The Stamford House will house luxury hotel The Patina Capitol.

Other buildings in Capitol Singapore are the Eden Residences Capitol and Capitol Piazza.
