Christmas tree outside Ngee Ann City catches fire

A 7-metre high Christmas tree in front of Ngee Ann City caught fire on Monday evening.

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the fire destroyed the entire tree, which was located outside Ngee Ann City Tower A along Orchard Road.

No injuries were sustained.

The SCDF received a call for assistance at 8:32pm, and extinguished the fire completely within five minutes of their arrival at 8:36pm.

An SCDF spokesperson said that the cause of the fire is being investigated.

987FM deejay Divian Nair was across the street with his brother when they noticed the fire on the tree.

He told Yahoo! Singapore that it was a small fire that started at the lower half of the tree, which then spread in both directions -- to its base and to the star at its top -- within a few minutes.

"From across the road, I could feel the heat emanating from the tree," said the 24-year-old. "I was quite surprised at how quickly it spread," he added.
