SINGAPORE: More and more students from Australia, New Zealand, and as far as Scandinavia and Belgium are pursuing an education in acting in Singapore.
Edith Podesta, programme leader for acting at LASALLE College of the Arts, said: "If you look at the theatre that’s coming through Singapore, it’s so good. The standard is on... par (with) the international industry."
Into its third year, the school’s Acting and Musical Theatre programmes are a hit with students.
The school said this is because its high quality programmes are comparable to those in the United Kingdom.
Whether it is stage or television work, many of the students at LASALLE are actively involved in the local entertainment industry.
Some even find studying in Singapore actually opens more doors for them internationally.
Ashleigh Fleming, a third year graduating student, has just landed herself a job in Hong Kong Disneyland, thanks to the auditions set up by the school.
The Australian attributed her success to her time in Singapore. "It’s been a great experience. Just surrounding yourself in a different culture is a learning experience which feeds into everything that you do, especially as an actor."
Another third year graduating student, Crispian Chan, will perform in a local production of Lear that is travelling to Brussels in May. — CNA/ac
